Denver Mandates That All Public-Sector and Certain Private-Sector Employees Be Vaccinated for COVID-19

On August 2, 2021, Denver, Colorado Mayor Michael B. Hancock announced that all city employees, as well as private-sector workers in certain “high-risk” settings, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by September 30, 2021. After September 30, unvaccinated individuals covered by this mandate will not be permitted to work onsite or in the field. In order to meet this September 30 deadline, employees covered by this requirement must receive their final doses of the vaccine by September 15.

What risk do unvaccinated people pose to vaccinated people if vaccines work?

Joe Biden said, if you're fully vaccinated, the chances that you can get severely ill, not even die just get severely ill, are very low. And the statistic that he gave is, out of every 160,000 people who have been vaccinated, only one ends up going to the hospital with a serious illness. So the risk if you're vaccinated is almost zero, which means what danger do unvaccinated people pose to people like me who listened to that and went and got the vaccine? Continue reading

The race to vaccinate

The race to vaccinate 16 January 2023 — 5:00PM TO 6:00PM Anonymous (not verified) 9 December 2022 Chatham House and Online

What are the lessons from the UK’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign?

The first COVID-19 vaccination in the UK was administered on 8 December 2020, eight months after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic on 11 March.

With multiple rounds of vaccines having now been administered widely, the UK is in a position to live effectively with the virus and the prospects of more lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions have diminished.

The story behind the UK’s biggest vaccination campaign in British history is told during this discussion with Kate Bingham and Tim Hames, authors of The Long Shot: The Inside Story of the Race to Vaccinate Britain, which describes the management of complex political and operational challenges.

Juggling vaccine suppliers, Whitehall and the media, all had the potential to threaten the Vaccine Taskforce’s efforts.

This event explores the UK’s experience and lessons learned. The panel explore:

  • How were the most challenging obstacles to the UK’s vaccine development, scale-up and delivery overcome?
  • What does the success of the UK vaccine development and delivery mean in an international context?
  • What has the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted about global cooperation on vaccine administration worldwide?
  • As the pandemic moves into the rear-view mirror, how can industry and government work better together for future vaccination campaigns?

As with all members events, questions from the audience drive the conversation.

Flu Season Now Underway; Get Vaccinated Today

As the temperatures start to drop and the leaves begin to change, the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) marks the start of 2023-2024 influenza (flu) season. Infection with flu can cause mild to severe illness, and sometimes even death.  As a possible signal of what we might expect, the U.S. often looks at what Australia and New Zealand experienced in the Southern Hemisphere during their flu season in our summer.  This year, the countries had a particularly active flu season.  As the spread of RSV and COVID-19 variants continue, and the possibility that an active flu season is ahead, the DPH recommends Delaware residents get their flu vaccines as soon as possible.

Measles in Children Vaccinated With 2 Doses of MMR

School outbreak investigation in Quebec, Canada suggested that adolescents previously vaccinated with 2 doses of measles vaccine beginning at 12 months of age were at greater measles risk than those whose first dose was given at ≥15 months of age.

Greater measles risk among earlier first-of-2-dose vaccine recipients was replicated as a generalized provincial finding during the 2011 epidemic in Quebec, Canada. The mechanism remains unknown, but the findings warrant additional evaluation in the context of measles elimination efforts. (Read the full article)

Acute Lower Respiratory Infection Among Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-Vaccinated Children

Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination may provide benefits beyond protecting against pediatric tuberculosis. Evidence suggests links between cell-mediated immunity from tuberculosis and bacterial/viral-related pneumonia but the impact of BCG on acute lower respiratory infection is not fully known.

BCG-vaccinated children had a lower risk of suspected acute lower respiratory infection. Protection was amplified when children were vaccinated against diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP). Number of DTP doses did not modify this effect, but order in which vaccines were received did. (Read the full article)
