St Silouan, elder of Mt Athos (1938) (September 11 OC)

He was a Russian peasant who traveled to Mt Athos and became a monk in the Russian Monastery of St Panteleimon. He lived so simply, humbly and quietly that he might be forgotten had not Fr Sophrony (Sakharov) become his spiritual child and, after the Saint's repose, written a book describing his life and teaching: St Silouan of Mt Athos, one of the great spiritual books of our time. It was through Fr Sophrony's efforts that St Silouan was glorified as a Saint.   Following a vision of Christ Himself, St Silouan withdrew to a hermitage to devote himself entirely to prayer; but he was called back to serve as steward to the monastery. Though he now supervised some two hundred men, he only increased his prayers, withdrawing to his cell to pray with tears for each individual worker under his care. For more than fifteen years he struggled with demonic attacks during prayer until he was almost in despair. At this point Christ spoke to him in a vision, saying 'The proud always suffer from demons.' Silouan answered 'Lord, teach me what I must do that my soul may become humble.' To this he received the reply, Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not. Silouan made this his discipline in every moment of his life, and was granted the grace of pure prayer. He said that if he ever let his mind wander from the fire of hell, disruptive thoughts would once again plague him. In his humiliation he was filled with a pervasive love for all — he said many times that the final criterion of true Christian faith is unfeigned love for enemies, and that 'to pray for others is to shed blood.'   St Silouan demonstrates that the Church's true Theologians are those who manifest in their own lives the fruits of the Church's hesychastic spirituality, however insignificant they may appear to the eyes of the world

Structural characterization and comparative analysis of polymorphic forms of psilocin (4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine)

The title compound, C12H16N2O, is a hydroxy-substituted monoamine alkaloid, and the primary metabolite of the naturally occurring psychedelic compound psilocybin. Crystalline forms of psilocin are known, but their characterization by single-crystal structure analysis is limited. Herein, two anhydrous polymorphic forms (I and II) of psilocin are described. The crystal structure of polymorphic Form I, in space group P21/c, was first reported in 1974. Along with the redetermination to modern standards and unambiguous location of the acidic H atom and variable-temperature single-crystal unit-cell determinations for Form I, the Form II polymorph of the title compound, which crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, is described for the first time. The psilocin molecules are present in both forms in their phenol–amine tautomeric forms (not resolved in the 1974 report). The molecules in Forms I and II, however, feature different conformations of their N,N-dimethyl ethylene substituent, with the N—C—C—C link in Form I being trans and in Form II being gauche, allowing the latter to bend back to the hydroxyl group of the same molecule, leading to the formation of a strong intramolecular O—H⋯N hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl moiety and ethylamino-nitrogen group. In the extended structure of Form II, the molecules form one-dimensional strands through N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds from the indole group to the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl moiety of an adjacent molecule. Form II exhibits whole-molecule disorder due to a pseudo-mirror operation, with an occupancy ratio of 0.689 (5):0.311 (5) for the two components. In contrast, Form I does not feature intramolecular hydrogen bonds but forms a layered structure through intermolecular N—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

Tracking copper nanofiller evolution in polysiloxane during processing into SiOC ceramic

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) remain at the forefront of research for a variety of applications including ultra-high-temperature ceramics, energy storage and functional coatings. Despite their wide use, questions remain about the complex structural transition from polymer to ceramic and how local structure influences the final microstructure and resulting properties. This is further complicated when nanofillers are introduced to tailor structural and functional properties, as nanoparticle surfaces can interact with the matrix and influence the resulting structure. The inclusion of crystalline nanofiller produces a mixed crystalline–amorphous composite, which poses characterization challenges. With this study, we aim to address these challenges with a local-scale structural study that probes changes in a polysiloxane matrix with incorporated copper nanofiller. Composites were processed at three unique temperatures to capture mixing, pyrolysis and initial crystallization stages for the pre-ceramic polymer. We observed the evolution of the nanofiller with electron microscopy and applied synchrotron X-ray diffraction with differential pair distribution function (d-PDF) analysis to monitor changes in the matrix's local structure and interactions with the nanofiller. The application of the d-PDF to PDC materials is novel and informs future studies to understand interfacial interactions between nanofiller and matrix throughout PDC processing.

Apple TV+ Shares 'Silo' Recap Video Ahead of Season 2 Starting Friday

Apple TV+ today shared a recap video for the first season of "Silo. The hit series returns for a second season starting later this week.

Warning: The video contains major spoilers, obviously.

"Silo" follows the last 10,000 people on Earth, all of whom live in a massive underground bunker to escape the seemingly toxic and deadly world outside. The people are unaware of why the silo was built, and those who seek the truth face deadly consequences. Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette Nichols, an engineer who attempts to unravel the mysteries surrounding the silo following a loved one's murder. The sci-fi series is based on Hugh Howey's best-selling book trilogy "Wool." Ferguson and Howey both serve as executive producers.

The 10-episode second season of "Silo" begins this Friday, November 15, and one new episode will follow every Friday through January 17.

Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month or $99 per year in the U.S., and the streaming service is also included in all Apple One subscription bundles.

Bis(4-acetoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptammonium) fumarate: a new crystalline form of psilacetin, an alternative to psilocybin as a psilocin prodrug

The title compound (systematic name: bis{2-[4-(acetyloxy)-1H-indol-3-yl]ethan-1-aminium} but-2-enedioate), 2C14H19N2O2+·C4H2O42−, has a single protonated psilacetin cation and one half of a fumarate dianion in the asymmetric unit. There are N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the ammonium H atoms and the fumarate O atoms, as well as N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the indole H atoms and the fumarate O atoms. The hydrogen bonds hold the ions together in infinite one-dimensional chains along [111].

Both salts possess a protonated tryptammonium cation and a 3-carboxyacrylate (hydrogen fumarate) anion in the asymmetric unit; the 4-HO-MiPT structure also contains a water molecule of crystallization. Both cations feature disorder of the side chain over two orientations, in a 0.630 (3):0.370 (3) ratio for MiPT and a 0.775 (5):0.225 (5) ratio for 4-HO-MiPT. In both extended structures, N—H⋯O and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate infinite two-dimensional networks.

Compound (I) crystallizes in space group P21/c with Z' = 1, (II) in Pnma with Z' = 0.5 and (III) in Cmcm with Z' = 0.25. Consequently, the molecules of (II) are constrained by m and those of (III) by m2m site symmetries. Despite this, both (I) and (II) are distorted towards mild boat conformations, as is typical of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-substituted phenyl compounds, reflecting the high local steric pressure of the flanking alkyl groups. Compound (III) by contrast is planar and symmetric, and this lack of distortion is compatible with the lower steric pressure of the flanking 2,6-diisopropyl substituents.

In each compound, the metal ion is coordinated by the four secondary N atoms of the macrocyclic ligand, which adopts the most energetically stable trans-III conformation, and the mutually trans O atoms of the carboxylate in a slightly tetragonally distorted trans-NiN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry. The crystals of both types of compounds are composed of parallel polymeric chains of the macrocyclic cations linked by the anions of the acid running along the [101] and [110] directions in I and II, respectively. In I, each polymeric chain is linked to four neighbouring ones by hydrogen bonding between the NH groups of the macrocycle and the carboxylate O atoms, thus forming a three-dimensional supramolecular network. In II, each polymeric chain contacts with only two neighbours, forming hydrogen bonds between the partially protonated carboxylic groups of the bridging ligand. As a result, a lamellar structure is formed with the layers oriented parallel to the (1overline{1}1) plane.

The freebase of 4-HO-NMT has a single molecule in the asymmetric unit joined together by N—H⋯O and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds in a two-dimensional network parallel to the (100) plane. The ethylamine arm of the tryptamine is modeled as a two-component disorder with a 0.895 (3) to 0.105 (3) occupancy ratio. The fumarate salt of 4-HO-NMT crystallizes with a tryptammonium cation and one half of a fumarate dianion in the asymmetric unit. The ions are joined together by N—H⋯O and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional framework, as well as π–π stacking between the six-membered rings of inversion-related indoles (symmetry operation: 2 − x, 1 − y, 2 – z).
