Safari 3 beta breaks widgets that use the search history feature of search input field types. I have put together a version of IP Locator with that feature disabled for anyone who wants to continue using it with the broken version of Safari. You can download it here. A bug has been filed with Apple and I suspect this will be a fairly high priority fix considering how many Dashboard widgets are affected.

On the afternoon of October 16, the woman who had worked in the park for almost 17 years entered the enclosure with three lions to clean it. However, she did not close the bolt of the door between the two sections of the cage, and the predators attacked her. The woman died. The case was opened into violation of labor protection requirements that resulted in the death of a person through negligence.

Google has recently been experimenting with burying the full URL of the page you’re at and showing just the domain. Yesterday Apple unveiled their next installment of the OS X operating system in which we can see the new Safari interface doing just the same: truncating the full URL to just the domain name. This behavior is consistent with what Safari currently does on iOS powered devices. In another change, the title bar is now completely gone, its place taken by the simplified address bar.

So that’s at least one major browser deciding to go the route of hiding the full URL. I’m not sure whether I like this change or not, but I do like the idea of dropping the title of the page. Since page tabs already show the title of each page (albeit truncated), it doesn’t make sense to duplicate it again just a few pixels above them. Dropping that title bar removes a whole line of interface chrome, making the thing feel cleaner and more compact. This is what other browsers have done long ago, and it’s nice seeing Safari follow suit. Obviously the title still remains very important in the tabs – you cannot use the domain for the tab label because that won’t let you differentiate between different pages on the same site – but it doesn’t make sense to dedicate much chrome to it when its main purpose is quick identification rather than description. The purpose of description is handy in a different context, e.g. managing bookmarks. There, you’d want to see the titles in full.

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to create and use Safari website shortcuts or "Web apps" on macOS.

This feature allows you to create shortcuts to websites on your dock that when opened, behave as if the website was its own app. This may be useful for VoiceOver users, as web apps are included when pressing Command-Tab to cycle through open apps, making them easy to switch to and from. In addition, these web apps can be mapped to commands in Keyboard Commander so they can be accessed with a single keystroke.

To create a web app, go to a website in Safari and choose File > Add to Dock. Change the name and icon of the web app if you wish, and click Add. It can then be accessed via the Dock, or in the Applications folder in your Home folder, accessed by choosing Go > Home in Finder, or pressing Command-Shift-H. To map the web app to a command in Keyboard Commander, open Voiceover Utility > Commanders > Keyboard, click Add, type the key that you want to open the app when pressed, choose "Custom commands > Open application" from the menu, and navigate to and select the web app in the Open dialog.

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to change Safari's default search engine on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

To do this on iOS and iPadOS, go to Settings > Safari and double-tap "Search engine" to specify the search engine for standard browsing windows, or "private search engine" if you want to specify a different search engine to be used in private browsing windows. On macOS, in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or press Command-Comma) click the Search button in the toolbar, and choose from the "Search engine" or "private browsing search engine" popup menus.
