The violurate and the violuric acid residues each form distinct N—H...O hydrogen-bonded tapes with a common R22(8) hydrogen-bond motif extending parallel to (103). Solvent water molecules connect the tapes to form a tri-periodic hydrogen-bonded network with channels extending parallel to the a-axis direction, which accommodate the N—H...Owater hydrogen-bonded 1,10-phenanthrolinium cations. Direct N—H...O hydrogen bonds between the 1,10-phenanthrolinium and violurate ions are not encountered.

The Jungle Dome will always be special in our memories for many reasons:


  •  Friendly staff and excellent food! (Loved the fresh orange juice and the fry jacks for breakfast) 
  • Clean and comfortable room (Loved the fridge and coffee maker) 
  • Beautiful surroundings and wonderful sounds of the jungle (Orange trees, flowers, howler monkeys, horses galloping, and birds, plus roosters too!) 
  • Refreshing pool and relaxing hammocks…aahhhh! 
  • Daytrips to the ruins, cave tubing with David, the Blue Hole to swim, and driving on the beautiful Hummingbird Highway. 
  • Also, the visit to Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio, was lots of fun (I think I’ve already taken over 1000 photos in three days)

·         Most importantly, the Jungle Dome will be forever in our memory, because this us where we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. 

Thanks for sharing your piece of paradise in Belize, that we plan on sharing with our own friends and family through stories, pictures, and memories.

X-ray crystal structure of proliferating cell nuclear antigen 1 from Aeropyrum pernix

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) plays a critical role in DNA replication by enhancing the activity of various proteins involved in replication. In this study, the crystal structure of ApePCNA1, one of three PCNAs from the thermophilic archaeon Aeropyrum pernix, was elucidated. ApePCNA1 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli and the protein was purified and crystallized. The resulting crystal structure determined at 2.00 Å resolution revealed that ApePCNA1 does not form a trimeric ring, unlike PCNAs from other domains of life. It has unique structural features, including a long interdomain-connecting loop and a PIP-box-like sequence at the N-terminus, indicating potential interactions with other proteins. These findings provide insights into the functional mechanisms of PCNAs in archaea and their evolutionary conservation across different domains of life. A modified medium and protocol were used to express recombinant protein containing the lac operon. The expression of the target protein increased and the total incubation time decreased when using this system compared with those of previous expression protocols.

The title compound, [Ru(C12H14NO2)2(C12H8N2)]PF6 crystallizes in the tetra­gonal Sohnke space group P41212. The two bidentate chiral salicyloxazoline ligands and the phenanthroline co-ligand coordinate to the central RuIII atom through N,O and N,N atom pairs to form bite angles of 89.76 (15) and 79.0 (2)°, respectively. The octa­hedral coordination of the bidentate ligands leads to a propeller-like shape, which induces metal-centered chirality onto the complex, with a right-handed (Δ) absolute configuration [the Flack parameter value is −0.003 (14)]. Both the complex cation and the disordered PF6− counter-anion are located on twofold rotation axes. Apart from Coulombic forces, the crystal cohesion is ensured by non-classical C—H⋯O and C—H⋯F inter­actions.

Crystal structure and analytical profile of 1,2-di­phenyl-2-pyrrolidin-1-yl­ethanone hydro­chloride or `α-D2PV': a synthetic cathinone seized by law enforcement, along with its diluent sugar, myo-inositol

A confiscated package of street drugs was characterized by the usual mass spectral (MS) and FT–IR analyses. The confiscated powder material was highly crystalline and was found to consist of two very different species, accidentally of sizes convenient for X-ray diffraction. Thus, one each was selected and redundant com­plete sets of data were collected at 100 K using Cu Kα radiation. The selected crystals contained: (a) 1,2-diphenyl-2-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)ethanone hy­dro­chloride hemihydrate or 1-(2-oxo-1,2-di­phenyl­eth­yl)pyrrolidin-1-ium chloride hemihydrate, C18H20NO+·Cl−·0.5H2O, (I), a synthetic cathinone called `α-D2PV', and (b) the sugar myo-inositol, C6H12O6, (II), probably the only instance in which the drug and its diluent have been fully characterized from a single confiscated sample. Moreover, the structural details of both are rather attractive showing: (i) inter­esting hydrogen bonding observed in pairwise inter­actions by the drug mol­ecules, mediated by the chloride counter-anions and the waters of crystallization, and (ii) π–π inter­actions in the case of the phenyl rings of the drug which are of two different types, namely, π–π stacking and edge-to-π. Finally, the inositol crystallizes with Z' = 2 and the resulting diastereoisomers were examined by overlay techniques.

The crystal structures of two coordination com­pounds, (acetato-κO)(2,2'-bi­py­ri­dine-κ2N,N')(1,10-phenanthroline-κ2N,N')copper(II) acetate hexa­hydrate, [Cu(C2H3O2)(C10H8N2)(C12H8N2)](C2H3O2)·6H2O or [Cu(bipy)(phen)Ac]Ac·6H2O, and (acetato-κO)bis­(2,2'-bi­py­ri­dine-κ2N,N')copper(II) acetate–acetic acid–water (1/1/3), [Cu(C2H3O2)(C10H8N2)2](C2H3O2)·C2H4O2·3H2O or [Cu(bipy)2Ac]Ac·HAc·3H2O, are reported and com­pared with the previously published structure of [Cu(phen)2Ac]Ac·7H2O (phen is 1,10-phenanthroline, bipy for 2,2'-bi­py­ri­dine, ac is acetate and Hac is acetic acid). The geometry around the metal centre is penta­coordinated, but highly distorted in all three cases. The coordination number and the geometric distortion are both discussed in detail, and all com­plexes belong to the space group Poverline{1}. The analysis of the geometric parameters and the Hirshfeld surface properties dnorm and curvedness provide information about the metal–ligand inter­actions in these com­plexes and allow com­parison with similar systems.

The synthesis and structural properties of a chlorido­bis­{N-[(4-meth­oxy­phen­yl)imino]­pyrrolidine-1-carboxamide}­zinc(II) (aceto­nitrile)­trichlorido­zincate coordination complex

The title complex, [ZnCl(C12H15N3O2)2][ZnCl3(CH3CN)], was synthesized and its structure was fully characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complex crystallizes in the ortho­rhom­bic system, space group Pbca (61), with a central zinc atom coordinating one chlorine atom and two pyrrolidinyl-4-meth­oxy­phenyl azoformamide ligands in a bidentate manner, utilizing both the nitro­gen and oxygen atoms in a 1,3-heterodiene (N=N—C=O) motif for coordinative bonding, yielding an overall positively (+1) charged complex. The complex is accompanied by a [(CH3CN)ZnCl3]− counter-ion. The crystal data show that the harder oxygen atoms in the heterodiene zinc chelate form bonding inter­actions with distances of 2.002 (3) and 2.012 (3) Å, while nitro­gen atoms are coordinated by the central zinc cation with bond lengths of 2.207 (3) and 2.211 (3) Å. To gain further insight into the inter­molecular inter­actions within the crystal, Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed, along with the calculation of two-dimensional fingerprint plots. This analysis revealed that H⋯H (39.9%), Cl⋯H/H⋯Cl (28.2%) and C⋯H/H⋯C (7.2%) inter­actions are dominant. This unique crystal structure sheds light on arrangement and bonding inter­actions with azo­formamide ligands, and their unique qualities over similar semicarbazone and azo­thio­formamide structures.

In the title compound, C19H18BrFN2O, the pyrrolidine ring adopts an envelope conformation. In the crystal, mol­ecules are linked by inter­molecular N—H⋯O, C—H⋯O, C—H⋯F and C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network. In addition, C—H⋯π inter­actions connect mol­ecules into ribbons along the b-axis direction, consolidating the mol­ecular packing. The inter­molecular inter­actions in the crystal structure were qu­anti­fied and analysed using Hirshfeld surface analysis.

Puckering effects of 4-hy­droxy-l-proline isomers on the conformation of ornithine-free Gramicidin S

The cyclic peptide cyclo(Val-Leu-Leu-d-Phe-Pro)2 (peptide 1) was specifically designed for structural chemistry investigations, drawing inspiration from Gramicidin S (GS). Previous studies have shown that Pro residues within 1 adopt a down-puckering conformation of the pyrrolidine ring. By incorporating fluoride-Pro with 4-trans/cis-isomers into 1, an up-puckering conformation was successfully induced. In the current investigation, introducing hy­droxy­prolines with 4-trans/cis-isomer configurations (tHyp/cHyp) into 1 gave cyclo(Val-Leu-Leu-d-Phe-tHyp)2 methanol disolvate monohydrate, C62H94N10O12·2CH4O·H2O (4), and cyclo(Val-Leu-Leu-d-Phe-cHyp)2 monohydrate, C62H94N10O12·H2O (5), respectively. However, the puckering of 4 and 5 remained in the down conformation, regardless of the geometric position of the hydroxyl group. Although the backbone structure of 4 with trans-substitution was asymmetric, the asymmetric backbone of 5 with cis-substitution was unexpected. It is speculated that the anti­cipated influence of stress from the geometric positioning, which was expected to affect the puckering, may have been mitigated by inter­actions between the hydroxyl groups of hy­droxy­proline, the solvent mol­ecules, and peptides.

This study presents the synthesis, characterization and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 1-[6-bromo-2-(3-bromo­phen­yl)-1,2,3,4-tetra­hydro­quinolin-4-yl]pyrrolidin-2-one, C19H18Br2N2O. In the title compound, the pyrrolidine ring adopts a distorted envelope configuration. In the crystal, mol­ecules are linked by inter­molecular N—H⋯O, C—H⋯O and C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network. In addition, pairs of mol­ecules along the c axis are connected by C—H⋯π inter­actions. According to a Hirshfeld surface study, H⋯H (36.9%), Br⋯H/H⋯Br (28.2%) and C⋯H/H⋯C (24.3%) inter­actions are the most significant contributors to the crystal packing.

The title compound, [Sn(C6H5)Cl3(C12H8N2)], which was obtained by the reaction between 1,10-phenanthroline and phenyl­tin trichloride in methanol, exhibits intra­molecular hydrogen-bonding inter­actions involving the chlorine and hydrogen atoms. Crystal cohesion is ensured by inter­molecular C—H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, as well as Y—X⋯π and π-stacking inter­actions involving three different aromatic rings with centroid–centroid distances of 3.6605 (13), 3.9327 (14) and 3.6938 (12) Å]. Hirshfeld surface analysis and the associated two-dimensional fingerprint plots reveal significant contributions from H⋯H (30.7%), Cl⋯H/H⋯Cl (32.4%), and C⋯H/H⋯C (24.0%) contacts to the crystal packing while the C⋯C (6.2%), C⋯Cl/Cl⋯C (4.1%), and N⋯H/H⋯N (1.7%) inter­actions make smaller contributions.
