Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Fernando Laposse (November 14, 2024 5:30pm)

Event Begins: Thursday, November 14, 2024 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Fernando Laposse specializes in transforming humble natural materials into refined design pieces. He has worked extensively with overlooked plant fibers such as sisal, loofah, and corn leaves. Laposse’s works are the result of extensive research which culminates in objects of “endemic design” where materials and their historical and cultural ties to a particular location and its people take center stage. He often works with indigenous communities in his native Mexico to create local employment opportunities and raise awareness about the challenges they face in a globalized world.
Laposse’s projects are informative and educational and touch on topics such as sustainability, the loss of biodiversity, community dissolution, migration, and the negative impacts of global trade in local agriculture and food culture. He does so by documenting the issues and announcing possible resolutions through the transformative power of design.
Laposse’s projects have been exhibited in the Triennale di Milano, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, The Design Museum in London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the World Economic Forum, among others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Design Museum Gent, Le centre national des arts plastiques, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Laposse studied at Central Saint Martins in London as a product designer and currently lives and works in Mexico City.
Presented in partnership with Design Core Detroit. This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.
Series presenting partners: Detroit PBS and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Radio.

St. Louis Fed President Musalem (2025 voter) will be speaking at the top of the hour.

St. Louis Fed Pres. Musalem is scheduled to speak at the top of the hour. Musalem is a voting member in 2025. Back on October 7, Musalem spoke and said:

  • More rate cuts likely given economic outlook.
  • Won't predict timing or size of future Fed easings.
  • Personal rate outlook is above Fed’s median view.
  • Costs of easing too much outweigh easing too little.
  • Supported Fed’s decision last month to cut rates by 50 basis points.
  • Policy patience has served Fed well.
  • Cooler job market still consistent with strong economy.
  • Expects inflation pressures to continue to abate.
  • Expects inflation to converge to 2% over next couple of quarters.
  • Financial conditions remain supportive of growth.
  • Some economic activity slowed by rate policy, election uncertainty.

That was over a month ago. So how he weighs in now will be interesting given the backup in yields and other economic and other developments since that time

How to be notified of upcoming speaking events with civil rights heroes

My family and I are greatly interested in events featuring people who were directly involved with the Civil Rights movement, specifically the fight against segregation and racism. I am keenly aware that time is limited for hearing them speak in person, and I want my kids to be able to meet them and hear their stories.

To give you an idea of the sorts of things I mean: over the past year, we have been able to book a tour of Selma with Joanne Bland (which was an incredibly wonderful experience!), and attend a panel discussion with Bernard Lafayette and other Freedom Riders.

Aside from repeatedly doing internet searches for names of people we would be interested in seeing, is there a way for us to keep track of upcoming events along these lines that we might be interested in? We're willing to travel, so we're looking for more than local options. And if you happen to know of upcoming events along these lines, please share!

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

Clement of Alexandria (150-211 A.D.) - Clement of Alexandria was one of the major Greek-speaking thinkers of the early church - He came from a pagan background at Athens and his Christian theology was strongly influenced by Greek philosophy - Clement taug

Clement was born probably c. 150 A.D. of heathen parentage at Athens. The circumstances of his conversion are not known. It is supposed that he was troubled, like Justin, by the problem of God and, like him, was attracted to Christianity by the nobility and purity of the evangelical doctrines and morals. His conversion, if it had not yet taken place, was at least imminent when he undertook the journeys spoken of in his writings. He set out from Greece and travelled through southern Italy, Palestine, and finally Egypt, seeking everywhere the society of Christian teachers. -- Towards 180 A.D., he met Pantaenus at Alexandria, and took up his permanent residence in that city. There he was ordained a presbyter and, from being a disciple of Pantaenus, became, in 190, his associate and fellow-teacher. In 202 A.D. or 203 A.D., he was forced to suspend his lessons on account of the persecution of Septimius Severus, which closed the Christian school of Alexandria. He withdrew into Cappadocia, residing there with his former disciple, Bishop Alexander. We meet him again in 211 A.D., carrying to the Christians of Antioch a letter from Alexander, in which are mentioned the services he, Clement, had rendered in Cappadocia.-- In 215 A.D. or 216 A.D.the same Alexander, now bishop of Jerusalem, writes to Origen and speaks of Clement as having gone to his rest. Clement must therefore have died between 211 A.D. and 216 A.D. Ancient authors speak of him as St. Clement, but his name was not admitted to the Roman Martyrology by Benedict XIV.

Clarence Thomas Speaks?

I don't get Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, but neither do a lot of people. Then I see this commentary on CNN:

Ruben Navarrette, Jr. (CNN contributor): "Clarence Thomas has an abundance of two things that are often in short supply whenever Americans talk about race: courage and common sense."[http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/14/opinion/navarrette-clarence-thomas-race/index.html?iref=allsearch]

Thomas complains when people criticize him:
"The worst I have been treated was by northern liberal elites...The absolute worst I have ever been treated, the worst things that have been done to me, the worst things that have been said about me, are
by northern liberal elites, not by the people of Savannah, Georgia."

I grew up in the Northeast and I've been to Savannah, and hypocrisy doesn't pass muster either place. Thomas says, "Now, name a day (race) doesn't come up,...Differences in race, differences in sex, somebody doesn't look at you right, somebody says something. Everybody is sensitive."

Too sensitive? Thomas thinks he didn't get hired out of Yale Law School because he got in on affirmative action.  "Thomas also famously appraised his law degree as being worth 15 cents."

I don't see the common sense. I see conflict of interest and ethics issues in his wife's profitable lobbying pursuits:

As for courage, Thomas is famous for never talking--asking questions--as a justice on SOTUS. As much as I don't get Thomas, I don't get Navarrette more.
