College of the Liberal Arts and Bellisario College of Communications student Teagan Mayr spent eight weeks as a research and communications intern through the Perreault Fellows Program, a competitive global leadership and internship program at Penn State.

More than 5 lakh internship applications received so far from Youth

In January 2013, OM Norway and Norwegian Naval Training Agency agreed on internship programme for deckhands and motormen on board MV Logos Hope.

The use of blended learning is well suited for classes that involve a high level of experiential inquiry such as internship courses. These courses allow students to combine applied, face-to-face fieldwork activities with a reflective academic component delivered online. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to describe the pedagogical design and implementation of a pilot blended learning format internship course. After implementation, the pilot class was assessed. Results of the survey and focus group revealed high levels of student satisfaction in the areas of course structure, faculty-student interaction, and application of theory to the “real-world” experience undertaken by students during the internship. Lower levels of satisfaction with the course’s academic rigor and a sense of community were also reported. Notably, students with experience in blended learning expressed lower levels of overall satisfaction, but reported higher levels of satisfaction with the course’s rigor and sense of community. The paper concludes by offering implications for instructors seeking to implement blended learning approaches.

Internship courses, unlike others, are multi-pronged because they require coordination at different levels. Typically, a faculty member coordinates the communication and implementation at each level to achieve the desired outcomes. We call the position that this faculty holds the “internship coordinator”. For the work of the internship coordinator to be successful, he/she may need to synchronize the work of the internship with all parties involved. Failure to coordinate at one level or another may affect the work of other parties involved in completing the internship for the students. This paper explains the experience of an internship program at the computer science department (COSC) at Indiana University Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). We focus on the work of the internship coordinator for this program and his work to communicate and coordinate to successfully implement the internship experience for the students. We first discuss the theoretical foundation that led to the development of internship programs in academia and then elaborate on the multiple levels of the role of the internship coordinator in completing the internship experience for the students.

About the Research Enablement team

Our Enablement team covers engagements with Tier 1 universities and research organizations. We make Arm technology available to them for academic research, and we also develop teaching materials and kits to accelerate research and reduce development time. We work with partners on government funded research projects coving everything from methodology, automation and security to IP research and development.

Our team would welcome internship applications from candidates keen on delivering novel solutions to complex problems and deploying them to aid academia. In particular, the successful intern will be looking at how to extract power information from unit and system models to build up an approximation of the power usage of a complete system using different applications. This will involve modelling internal components in C++/ LISA to be integrated into existing FVP models. Other available debug tools like Iris/CADI can be exploited and tailored to collect valuable power consumption information.

The Role

You will work alongside experienced engineers within one of the IP development teams in Arm and be given real project tasks and will be supported by experienced engineers. Examples of previous project tasks are:

• Developing and trialing new processes for use by the design/verification teams.
• Investigating alternative options for existing design or verification implementations.
• Help to develop a hardware platform that can guide out customers to the best solution.
• Implement complex logic using Verilog to bridge a gap in a system.
• Develop bare metal software to exercise design functionality.
• Verify a complex design, from unit to full SoC level.
• Help to take a platform to silicon.

Facing soaring food prices and an escalating housing crisis, Quebec student associations are urgently calling on the provincial government to fund internships required for post-secondary training.

As a graduate student in software engineering, Chandan Shivalingaiah said he values the wealth of opportunities he has at Penn State, including research, an internship and teaching underserved high school students. 

Daniel Kumankumah, a Penn State Great Valley software engineering student, was thrilled to land a competitive summer internship with Amazon. When he faced obstacles, he sought help from his team and succeeded in solving coding problems while gaining valuable experience, he said.

Penn State Abington rehabilitation and human services faculty Abigail Akande, Stacey Conway and Michael Lavetsky wrote a recently published book, "Experiential Learning and Internship for Undergraduates: A Workbook for Undergraduate Interns in the Human Services Field," to help guide human services students at Abington and other Penn State campuses through the internship and career development and exploration processes.
