Na[GeF5]·2HF: the first quarternary phase in the H–Na–Ge–F system

The structure of cis- or trans-bridged [GeF5]− anionic chains have been investigated [Mallouk et al. (1984). Inorg. Chem. 23, 3160–3166] showing the first crystal structures of μ-F-bridged pentafluorogermanates. Herein, we report the second crystal structure of trans-pentafluorogermanate anions present in the crystal structure of sodium trans-pentafluorogermanate(IV) bis(hydrogen fluoride), Na[GeF5]·2HF. The crystal structure [orthorhombic Pca21, a = 12.3786 (3), b = 7.2189 (2), c = 11.4969 (3) Å and Z = 8] is built up from infinite chains of trans-linked [GeF6]2− octahedra, extending along the b axis and spanning a network of pentagonal bipyramidal distorted Na-centred polyhedra. These [NaF7] polyhedra are linked in a trans-edge fashion via hydrogen fluoride molecules, in analogy to already known sodium hydrogen fluorides and potassium hydrogen fluorides.

Synthesis and redetermination of the crystal structure of NbF5

Single crystals of NbF5, niobium(V) fluoride, have been obtained by the reaction of niobium metal in a stream of dilute elemental fluorine at 473 K and subsequent sublimation. The as-obtained bulk phase compound was shown to be pure by powder X-ray diffraction at 293 K and by IR and Raman spectroscopy. A single-crystal X-ray analysis was conducted at 100 K. In comparison to the previously reported structure model [Edwards (1964). J. Chem. Soc. pp. 3714–3718], the lattice parameters and fractional atom coordinates were determined to much higher precision and individual, anisotropic displacement parameters were refined for all atoms.

Rerefinement of the crystal structure of BiF5

The crystal structure of bismuth pentafluoride, BiF5, was rerefined from single-crystal data. BiF5 crystallizes in the α-UF5 structure type in the form of colorless needles. In comparison with the previously reported crystal-structure model [Hebecker (1971). Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 384, 111–114], the lattice parameters and fractional atomic coordinates were determined to much higher precision and all atoms were refined anisotropically, leading to a significantly improved structure model. The Bi atom (site symmetry 4/m..) is surrounded by six F atoms in a distorted octahedral coordination environment. The [BiF6] octahedra are corner-linked to form infinite straight chains extending parallel to [001]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the PBE0/TZVP level of theory were performed on the crystal structure of BiF5 to calculate its IR and Raman spectra. These are compared with experimental data.

ETSI launches new White Paper titled Fibre Development Index: Driving Towards an F5G Gigabit Society

Sophia Antipolis, 19 August 2021

Fibre and fibre-based optical networks are the key technical enablers of our society's twin transitions (green and digital), providing sustainable and cost-effective communication with high bandwidth, stability, reliability, and improved latency. In addition, the fibre evolution enables sustainable economic growth through advanced services and applications for users, businesses, and industries.

The new ETSI White Paper explains the methodology used to define a fibre development index, provides migration path recommendations to countries with different fibre development, and highlights the importance of setting policies to underpin that twin (green and digital) transformation.

ETSI launches first specification for the 5th Generation Fixed Network, F5G technology landscape

Sophia Antipolis, 23 September 2021

ETSI's 5th Generation Fixed Network group (F5G ISG) has just released its first specification, ETSI GS F5G 003, entitled F5G Technology Landscape. In this specification, the ISG studies the technical requirements, existing standards and gaps for 10 different new use cases, for home, enterprises or industrial needs.

ETSI GS F5G 003 use cases include PON (passive optical network) on-premises and passive optical LAN. In this case, a PON system could connect end devices (like HDTV, HD surveillance cameras and VR/AR helmets) and provide higher data rate, better coordination and controlled latency than current Ethernet and Wi-Fi mesh.

Quantitative proteomics reveal neuron projection development genes ARF4, KIF5B and RAB8A associated with Hirschsprung disease [Research]

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a heterogeneous group of neurocristopathy characterized by the absence of the enteric ganglia along a variable length of the intestine. Genetic defects play a major role in the pathogenesis of HSCR while family studies of pathogenic variants in all the known genes (loci) only demonstrate incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity for unknown reasons. Here, we applied large-scale, quantitative proteomics of human colon tissues from 21 patients using iTRAQ method followed by bioinformatics analysis. Selected findings were confirmed by parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) verification. At last the interesting differentially expressed proteins were confirmed by western blot. A total of 5341 proteins in human colon tissues were identified. Among them, 664 proteins with >1.2-fold difference were identified in 6 groups: groups A1 and A2 pooled protein from the ganglionic and aganglionic colon of male, long-segment HSCR patients (L-HSCR, n=7); groups B1 and B2 pooled protein from the ganglionic and aganglionic colon of male, short-segment HSCR patients (S-HSCR, n=7); and groups C1 and C2 pooled protein from the ganglionic and aganglionic colon of female, S-HSCR patients (n=7). Based on these analyses, 49 proteins from 5 pathways were selected for PRM verification, including ribosome, endocytosis, spliceosome, oxidative phosphorylation and cell adhesion. The downregulation of three neuron projection development genes ARF4, KIF5B and RAB8A in the aganglionic part of the colon were verified in 15 paired colon samples using WB. The findings of this study will shed new light on the pathogenesis of HSCR and facilitate the development of therapeutic targets.

F5 Capital v. Pappas

(California Court of Appeal) - In a a shareholder derivative action on behalf of a company, alleging that individual members of the company's board and affiliated entities improperly exploited their control of the corporation in entering into three separate self-dealing transactions, the district court's dismissal of the complaint, concluding that the dilution claim was properly derivative under Delaware law and that plaintiff failed to plead demand futility under Fed. R. Civ. P. Rule 23.1(b)(3)(B), as to any of the claims, is affirmed where: 1) plaintiff's dilution claim was properly derivative, not direct; 2) the district court had subject matter jurisdiction to adjudicate the non-class, derivative claims; and 3) plaintiff did not allege facts sufficient to excuse it from making a pre-suit demand.
