Chrome Update to Kill Many Addons, including Blockers

Almost one in six Chrome extensions could stop working this summer thanks to a major Google update. They include one of the most prominent ad-blocking tools. An extension is a third party tool that integrates with Chrome to improve the user's experience when accessing websites. They can include tools as diverse as password managers, page translators and video downloaders, though ad blockers are perhaps the best known. Extensions are able to integrate with Chrome and access its data thanks for a platform called Manifest. Google has developed a Version 3 of Manifest and is phasing out support ... (view more)

Chrome Sharing Could Blur Sensitive Info

Chrome on Android may soon automatically blur out sensitive data when screen sharing or recording. It's a potentially useful feature that brings some big questions. The feature was spotted as an optional "flag" in Chrome Canary, which means it's at the very earliest stage of public testing. Canary is a version of Chrome for people happy to be the first to try new features or update, the name referring to the literal "canary in the mine" whose death would warn miners of a problem such as a gas leak. Making a flag means it's not enabled by default even in Canary. That means it's very possible ... (view more)

Browsing the web with chrome and talkback 2016

This tutorial is for android 6 or later. If using android 5.1, click here for the old tutorial.

Configuring talkback

In order to use the web effectively, Make sure your keyboard and gesture settings are set as described here. Set talkback’s swipe up gesture to activate previous granularity and the swipe down gesture to go to next granularity. Tap settings, accessibility, talkback, settings, manage gestures, and make the changes here for swipe up and for swipe down. Once this is done, swiping down or up will change to navigation by character, word, and so on. In marshmallow, this is usually the default.

Next, set your keyboard to the default keymap. If you have been using classic all this time, switching to default may come as a nasty shock at first.; However, you will appreciate the extra features once the learning curve is through.

Gesture navigation

When you load a page in chrome, use the down/up gestures to navigate the page by element. chrome offers you heading and landmark, link, and control navigation. Control and link are self-explanatory. Heading and landmark replaces section navigation in marshmallow, and works far better than section navigation did. List navigation is gone. If you’re thinking that three web navigation elements is just a bit stingy, see the section on keyboard browsing. It would be nice to see substantially more elements receive gesture support, and to have the ability to configure the granularities menu to include the elements you want in the order you want.

Now, try this on your mobile device. Open the Inclusive Android homepage. Use the vertical gesture (swipe up or swipe down) to find headings and landmarks. Then, flick right to move down the page heading by heading until you reach the "latest apps and game entries" heading. In order to read the contents of that section, you'll have to use the gesture again to cycle to default granularity. Then you can flick right link by link to see the most recently added apps. These gestures work much more reliably for me than the firefox gestures, but I find the extra step of having to cycle a bit tedious. The firefox solution is more elegant in it's way as you'll see in a moment.

Keyboard navigation

While you were off configuring your keymap, you might have glanced down the list of keys and functions and thought, “ah! I see where he’s going with this.” For those of you who ignored the keyboard settings, go take a look. Using the keyboard, talkback will navigate by numerous elements including: individual heading levels, various form control types, tables, lists, and so on. For example, you can press alt H or alt shit H to move back and fourth through the headings, or you can use alt 1 to jump to any heading level one on the page. You can use alt T and alt shift T for tables, alt e and alt shift E for edit boxes, and much more. For an exhaustive list, see manage keyboard shortcuts in talkback settings.

Browser features

chrome's interface is blissfully uncluttered with most of the screen devoted to displaying pages, an address and search box, a tabs list button, and a menu button containing most of the actual browser functionality you'd expect. A link to keyboard shortcuts for chrome features can be found in the sources list below.

In marshmallow , the find in page feature is now accessible. You get to find in page by tapping more options, then find in page, or by pressing control F on your keyboard. I have not perfected a technique for doing this with the touch screen; However, using the keyboard, you first type what you want. Tab to next and press enter, Talkback will speak the instance of your search. You can press alt enter to activate if the instance is a link or object. You can use alt left or alt right arrows to see items nearby to your instance for context. Or, you can press enter on it’s own to go to the next instance. If you want to go to a previous instance, press shift tab to get to the previous button and press enter. Try finding the word “latest” on the inclusive android homepage. I think you’ll be very pleased.

chrome does not have an article reader. Considering that I have access to keyboard support, this is the only feature I really miss from firefox and safari.

SPDY - 90% of all Gmail Traffic via Chrome/HTTPS

Anyone watching the SPDY-DEV group will have heard something pretty amazing today. SPDY is a proposed alternative to HTTP from Google. It was launched in November 2009 and has been chugging along making progress ever since, but frankly without much further buzz.

Today, Google admitted on the mailing list that 90% of all Gmail and other Google services go via SPDY when the client is Chrome and SSL is used:

Yes, indeed SPDY is enabled in Chrome and on Google servers for all SSL
traffic at this point.  (Actually, we do 90% on SPDY, with a 10% holdback
for purposes of A/B comparisons).
This is pretty damn significant real world usage.

Expression, purification and crystallization of the photosensory module of phytochrome B (phyB) from Sorghum bicolor

Sorghum, a short-day tropical plant, has been adapted for temperate grain production, in particular through the selection of variants at the MATURITY loci (Ma1–Ma6) that reduce photoperiod sensitivity. Ma3 encodes phytochrome B (phyB), a red/far-red photochromic biliprotein photoreceptor. The multi-domain gene product, comprising 1178 amino acids, autocatalytically binds the phytochromobilin chromophore to form the photoactive holophytochrome (Sb.phyB). This study describes the development of an efficient heterologous overproduction system which allows the production of large quantities of various holoprotein constructs, along with purification and crystallization procedures. Crystals of the Pr (red-light-absorbing) forms of NPGP, PGP and PG (residues 1–655, 114–655 and 114–458, respectively), each C-terminally tagged with His6, were successfully produced. While NPGP crystals did not diffract, those of PGP and PG diffracted to 6 and 2.1 Å resolution, respectively. Moving the tag to the N-terminus and replacing phytochromobilin with phycocyanobilin as the ligand produced PG crystals that diffracted to 1.8 Å resolution. These results demonstrate that the diffraction quality of challenging protein crystals can be improved by removing flexible regions, shifting fusion tags and altering small-molecule ligands.

1-Ethyl-3,3-dimethylspiro[indoline-2,8'-phenaleno[1,9-fg]chromene]

The title pyrene-fused spiropyran derivative, C30H25NO, crystallizes with two molecules in the asymmetric unit with dihedral angles between their fused-ring sub units of 76.20 (8) and 89.38 (9)°. In the crystal, weak C—H⋯π interactions link the molecules into a three-dimensional network.

2-Oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl 3,3-dimethylbutanoate

In the crystal of the title compound, C15H16O4, the molecules are connected through C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating [100] chains, which are crosslinked by weak π–π stacking interactions.

chrome

2-Amino-5-oxo-4-(thiophen-2-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene-3-carbonitrile

The crystal structure of the title compound, C14H12N2O2S, reveals two symmetrically independent molecules within the asymmetric unit. Each molecule contains a chromenone core attached to a 2-thiophene ring, cyano, and amino groups. The 2-thiophene ring of one of the two molecules in the asymmetric unit was found to be disordered over two positions, with the major component having a site occupancy factor of 0.837 (2). The 2-thiophene ring is nearly orthogonal to the fused 4H-pyran ring, with dihedral angles between the two sets of planes being 89.5 (5) and 89.63 (8)°. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding, involving N—H⋯N and N—H⋯O interactions, creates two distinct motifs leading to the formation of a two-dimensional supramolecular network along the crystallographic ac plane.

In the title compound, C18H22O7, two hexane rings and an oxane ring are fused together. The two hexane rings tend toward a distorted boat conformation, while the tetrahydrofuran and dihydrofuran rings adopt envelope conformations. The oxane ring is puckered. The crystal structure features C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which link the molecules into a three-dimensional network. According to a Hirshfeld surface study, H⋯H (60.3%) and O⋯H/H⋯O (35.3%) interactions are the most significant contributors to the crystal packing.

Synthesis, structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 2-oxo-2H-chromen-6-yl 4-tert-butylbenzoate: work carried out as part of the AFRAMED project

In the title compound, C20H18O4, the dihedral angle between the 2H-chromen-2-one ring system and the phenyl ring is 89.12 (5)°. In the crystal, the molecules are connected through C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds to generate [010] double chains that are reinforced by weak aromatic π–π stacking interactions. The unit-cell packing can be described as a tilted herringbone motif. The H⋯H, H⋯O/O⋯H, H⋯C/C⋯H and C⋯C contacts contribute 46.7, 24.2, 16.7 and 7.6%, respectively, to its Hirshfeld surface.

In the structure of the title compound, C22H22N4O4·C3H7NO·H2O, the entire tricyclic system is approximately planar except for the carbon atom bearing the two methyl groups; the methoxyphenyl ring is approximately perpendicular to the tricycle. All seven potential hydrogen-bond donors take part in classical hydrogen bonds. The main molecule and the DMF combine to form broad ribbons parallel to the a axis and roughly parallel to the ab plane; the water molecules connect the residues in the third dimension.

Ethyl 2-[(2-oxo-2H-chromen-6-yl)oxy]acetate

Ethyl 2-[(2-oxo-2H-chromen-6-yl)oxy]acetate, C13H12O5, a member of the pharmacologically important class of coumarins, crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group in the form of sheets, within which molecules are related by inversion centers and 21 axes. Multiple C—H⋯O weak hydrogen-bonding interactions reinforce this pattern. The planes of these sheets are oriented in the approximate direction of the ac face diagonal. Intersheet interactions are a combination of coumarin system π–π stacking and additional C—H⋯O weak hydrogen bonds between ethyl acetoxy groups.

A short intramolecular C—H⋯O contact of 2.40 Å is observed. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals that 46.1% of the intermolecular interactions are from H⋯H contacts, 28.6% are from H⋯O/O⋯H contacts and 14.7% are from H⋯C/C⋯H.

Chrome for iOS Gets Google Lens Update, Shopping Insights and More

Google today announced several new features for the Chrome browser that's available on the iPhone and the iPad, with the new additions aimed at providing users with more intuitive ways for finding information and completing tasks.

Google Lens now supports searching with images and text at the same time, rather than search being limited to just an image. Users can add words to a visual query to refine results and conduct more complex searches.

Google Drive and Google Photos users can now save content from the web directly to those services from Chrome, freeing up on-device storage space. To save a file to Google Drive from Chrome, tap on the Google Drive option. Saving an image to ‌Photos‌ from Chrome can be done by long pressing on the image and then selecting the Save in Google ‌Photos‌ option.

For U.S. users, Chrome on iOS is gaining Shopping Insights, which are designed to better surface deals. If Chrome has Shopping Insights for a product that a user is searching for, there will be a "Good Deal Now" notification in the address bar. The feature requires signing into Chrome and toggling on "Make Searches and Browsing Better."

When viewing a map of an address in Chrome, users will soon be able to tap an underlined address and see a more detailed mini-map of the location directly in the browser without having to swap over to Google Maps. Google says that it is experimenting with this feature and will roll it out globally over the coming months.

Microsoft Edge Is Trying To Forcefully Get Your Chrome Tabs Again

A new update is rolling out that automatically starts Microsoft's Edge browser and prompts users to import their Chrome tabs -- a move that has sparked criticism over its invasive tactics to encourage Edge adoption. The Verge's Tom Warren reports: My colleague Richard Lawler noticed that Edge started automatically on his PC last week at boot and offered up a new prompt to "enhance your browsing experience." The pop-up has a "bring over your data from other browsers regularly" option ticked by default, and encourages people to confirm and continue with a big blue button. If you want to dismiss this prompt there's a tiny white X button that looks similar to the sparkles Microsoft is using in the background of the prompt. If you simply hit confirm and continue then Microsoft Edge will import your Chrome data and continually import your tabs if you have Chrome set as default. The prompt seems to mainly appear on PCs with Chrome installed, suggesting that Microsoft is once again targeting Chrome users. Microsoft confirmed the new "feature" to The Verge. "This is a notification giving people the choice to import data from other browsers," explains Microsoft spokesperson Caitlin Roulston. "There is an option to turn it off."

The Arg-293 of Cryptochrome1 is responsible for the allosteric regulation of CLOCK-CRY1 binding in circadian rhythm [Computational Biology]

Mammalian circadian clocks are driven by transcription/translation feedback loops composed of positive transcriptional activators (BMAL1 and CLOCK) and negative repressors (CRYPTOCHROMEs (CRYs) and PERIODs (PERs)). CRYs, in complex with PERs, bind to the BMAL1/CLOCK complex and repress E-box–driven transcription of clock-associated genes. There are two individual CRYs, with CRY1 exhibiting higher affinity to the BMAL1/CLOCK complex than CRY2. It is known that this differential binding is regulated by a dynamic serine-rich loop adjacent to the secondary pocket of both CRYs, but the underlying features controlling loop dynamics are not known. Here we report that allosteric regulation of the serine-rich loop is mediated by Arg-293 of CRY1, identified as a rare CRY1 SNP in the Ensembl and 1000 Genomes databases. The p.Arg293His CRY1 variant caused a shortened circadian period in a Cry1−/−Cry2−/− double knockout mouse embryonic fibroblast cell line. Moreover, the variant displayed reduced repressor activity on BMAL1/CLOCK driven transcription, which is explained by reduced affinity to BMAL1/CLOCK in the absence of PER2 compared with CRY1. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the p.Arg293His CRY1 variant altered a communication pathway between Arg-293 and the serine loop by reducing its dynamicity. Collectively, this study provides direct evidence that allosterism in CRY1 is critical for the regulation of circadian rhythm.

Amplification and Identification of Vertebrate Host Cytochrome c Oxidase Subunit I (COI) DNA Barcoding Templates from Mosquito Blood Meals

Mosquitoes take blood meals from a diverse range of host animals and their host associations vary by species. Characterizing these associations is an important element of the transmission dynamics of mosquito-vectored pathogens. To characterize mosquito host associations, various molecular techniques have been developed, which are collectively referred to as blood meal analysis. DNA barcoding has diverse biological applications and is well-suited to mosquito blood meal analysis. The standard DNA barcoding marker for animals is a 5' fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene. A major advantage of this marker is its taxonomic coverage in DNA sequence reference databases, making it feasible to identify a wider range of mosquito host species than with any other gene. However, the COI gene contains high sequence variation at potential priming sites between vertebrate orders. Coupled with the need for primer sequences to be mismatched with mosquito priming sites so that annealing to mosquito DNA is inhibited, it can be difficult to design primers suitable for blood meal analysis applications. Several primers are available that perform well in mosquito blood meal analysis, annealing to priming sites for most vertebrate host taxa, but not to those of mosquitoes. Because priming site sequence variation among vertebrate taxa can cause amplification to fail, a hierarchical approach to DNA barcoding-based blood meal analysis can be applied. In such an approach, no single primer set is expected to be effective for 100% of potential host species. If amplification fails in the initial reaction, a subsequent reaction is attempted with primers that anneal to different priming sites, and so on, until amplification is successful.
