Obama strong, rubber match awaits

Larry Mantle

In the second of the three Presidential debates, President Obama displayed the passion he lacked the first time around.  He also made his arguments more concisely, and didn't shy away from direct engagement with Mitt Romney.  Snap polls after the debate show most viewers and listeners though Obama won the debate, though the percentages weren't nearly as overwhelming as Romney's advantage last time out.

Will the President's apparent victory show up in the polls as dramatically as Romney's previous win?  What will the stakes be like for next Monday's final, tie-breaking, matchup?

Supreme Court schedules ‘conference’ on Obama’s eligibility
February 18, 2011

In a stunning move, the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled another “conference” on a legal challenge to Barack Obama’s eligibility to occupy the Oval Office, but officials there are not answering questions about whether two justices given their jobs by Obama will participate.

The court has confirmed that it has distributed a petition for rehearing in the case brought by attorney John Hemenway on behalf of retired Col. Gregory Hollister and it will be the subject of a conference on March 4.

Obama, Afghanistan, and the "Long War"

Is it a coincidence that the same day Tom Hayden writes about The 'Long War' quagmire, Obama pops up in Afghanistan on an "unannounced trip?"

Probably--but the implications of Hayden's op-ed piece are dire: in the absence of an ongoing "Cold War" to stoke the fires of unbridled defense expenses, the neocons will need to promote 80 years of undeclared war against "insurgent groups from Europe to South Asia."

Of course, along with defense contractors keeping in business--big business--there is the untold correlating hardship of casualties of Americans in the field.

So is Obama in Afghanistan today to reassure troops on their mission, to discuss options for the long haul with his generals? Or is he developing a way to sell the taxpayers on why they need to pay for 100,000 ground forces in a country who's biggest export is based on the opium poppy seed?

Voters opposed to Obamacre says it Doesn't go Far Enough!

Some polls showing the -for and -against Obama health care bill are misleading. In some cases, people who might have been in the "in favor" of Obama health care collumn were "opposed" but not because they were against health care reform. They simply didn't think the health care law went far enough by excluding the public option and other more equitable measures that would have caost the average taxpayer less while lessening the intrusion of for-profit health insurance companies.

As it stands, and has been combed through SCOTUS, it's about as far-reaching and beneficial as anything that's come up since FDR's Social Security, and LBJ's Great Society.

Don't be afraid of socialism--we live in a socialist republic. Some on the right would use smoke and mirrors to mae you think our form of government is a democracy--it's certainly not communism, but then neither is China--they are run by dictators who champion entrepreneurial capitalism.

The next best move, ASAP, would be astimulus plan twice the size of the last, instituted by Obama in collabroaion with the Fed. Then we'll see happ days come here again...

ePartners comes to Alabama

ePartners is making it's debut in Alabama in 492 cities statewide. ePartners is a nationwide relocation network that allows anyone to search for and find properties for sale in any city any time.

The local cities are affiliated with an agent or team of real estate agents who work the areas and are specialists in properties in each city. They can help members of the homebuying or homeselling public find exactly what they are looking for.

The ePartners network also contains specific city information on schools and neighborhoods, shopping and restaurants, and parks and recreation.

Sellers can market their homes through the nationwide network and buyers can easily find them from anywhere in the United States.

Some of the main sites are very easy to find: Alabamawebpage.com, Montgomerywebpage.com are examples of url's that make this network very consumer friendly.

The ePartners network also allows real estate agents to easily get plugged into a nationwide relocation and referral network.

ePartners is set to take off in early December 2006. We will be watching.

New Alabama Relocation Network makes debut

A new network of websites which features the largest 494 cities in Alabama will make it's debut statewide in December. Called the ePartners Network, the statewide web will make it easier for consumers to find properties all across the state of Alabama. In particular, the major cities, Montgomery, Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile and their surrounding communities are linked and cross linked so consumers can easily search for homes and real estate from one single location.

The state affiliate Broker, Mike Carraway (Broker, Access Realty), has already introduced the network to real estate agents in Birmingham, Huntsville, Jasper, Cullman, Hoover, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Montgomery, and several other Alabama cities. Each city has it's own site and weblog and an agent can elect to be the exclusive real estate agent for their city to help consumers find what they want or to market their property statewide.

This is the first time in the history of real estate that geographic boundaries have been erased. In the past, agents and brokers have worked in certain geographic areas and basically limited themselves to that area, even though they were licensed to do business anywhere in the state. Now, for the first time, those boundaries are gone. An agent licensed to do business in the state can assist customers finding homes or locating a local agent from anywhere.

This new network will be a plus for all real estate ancillary services as well. Mortgage companies, insurance companies, and others can now advertsie their services on the network either statewide or in a local community.

The ePartners Network will change the way that the real estate business is done in other ways as well. It will serve as the first statewide, and even nationwide, platform for paperless real estate transactions.

Alabama Real Estate in Recovery

(Birmingham, AL) The Alabama real estate market is already recovering from recent lows. Evidence is everywhere.

Inventories of property on the market hit an all time high at the end of november 2007 into the first of December 2007. Since then, the inventory of property for sale has been shrinking. This is always the first sign. As property inventories decrease, the demand for property rises. This causes price support and shores up values.

Mortgage applications, or new people applying for a home loan, increased 12% just last week. This is yet another sign that more buyers are entering the market to buy a home. If you combine this with the fact that inventories are shrinking, it doesn't take a genius to see that values will stop declining soon and prices will again start to rise.

Blind Boys of Alabama

Buskirk-Chumley Theater
Saturday, November 16, 2024, 7:30 – 10pm

The Blind Boys are known for crossing multiple musical boundaries with their remarkable interpretations of everything from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material by songwriters such as Eric Clapton, Prince, and Tom Waits. They have appeared on recordings with many artists, including Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Aaron Neville, Susan Tedeschi, Ben Harper, Patty Griffin, and Taj Mahal.

Blind Boys of Alabama released 'Echoes Of The South’ on Aug 25, 2023, which finds the Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductees coming home to honor those they've lost on a bold declaration of how far they still plan to go. The eleven-song collection is a portrait of perseverance from a group well-versed in overcoming incredible odds - from singing for pocket change in the Jim Crow South to performing for three different American presidents, soundtracking the Civil Rights movement, and helping define modern gospel music as we know it. Recently, the group's decades-long mission of spreading light and love has taken on even deeper context as they've reckoned with the loss of two of their own, Paul Beasley and Benjamin Moore, both longtime members of the Blind Boys’ tight-knit family. 'Echoes Of The South' is released in their honor - as well as for the group's recently-retired leader, Jimmy Carter - and keeps the Blind Boys' long-held mission statement at its core: “As long as everybody gives all that they have to give and we sing songs that touch the heart, we'll live on forever.”

In 2022, the group had a collaborative recording with Béla Fleck, nominated for a Grammy. The nominated collaboration, "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," powerfully reimagines the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement, originally made famous by Nina Simone. They also have had collaborative recordings and coinciding tours with both Marc Cohn and afro-pop duo Amadou & Mariam. In 2023, Blind Boys garnered another Grammy nomination for Best Americana Single for 'The Message' featuring Black Violin.

2024 started off the year with a return to the GRAMMY® Awards with three nominations and one win for Best Roots Gospel Album - 'Echoes Of The South.’ This was followed by a sold-out tour in Australia and a sizzling performance with Sir Tom Jones during the Bluesfest Byron Bay (Australia), where video of their rehearsal reached 750K + views in 48 hours on social platforms. The definitive book, titled Spirit of the Century, was released in March 2024. It’s an insider history of the Blind Boys of Alabama, the longest-running group in American music, and the untold story of their world written with band members and key musical colleagues.

Basic Black Live: President Barack Obama Re-Elected

Originally broadcast November 9, 2012.

November 9, 2012: Election 2012 came to a close on November 6 as President Barack Obama was elected for a second term. The turnout numbers rivaled those of 2008, despite long lines at the polls and court cases challenging early voting rules. In addition to the huge percentage of African Americans who voted for him, Obama was swept to victory by the youth and Latino votes, as well as large contingents of women, working class, and educated white voters.

Selective Acceleration and Inhibition of Crystal Growth of Glass Carbamazepine by Low-Concentration Poly(ethylene oxide):Effects of Drug Polymorph

Low-concentration poly(ethylene oxide) exhibit the polymorph-dependent effects on both the surface and bulk crystal growth of carbamazepine polymorphs. These polymorph-dependent effects of PEO were mainly attributed to the polymer enrichment at the interface and different crystal surface-polymer interactions.

Methyl N-{(1R)-2-[(methoxycarbonyl)oxy]-1-phenylethyl}carbamate

The title molecule, C12H15NO5, is a methyl carbamate derivative obtained by reacting (R)-2-phenylglycinol and methyl chloroformate, with calcium hydroxide as heterogeneous catalyst. Supramolecular chains are formed in the [100] direction, based on N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the amide and carboxylate groups. These chains weakly interact in the crystal, and the phenyl rings do not display significant π–π interactions.

Molecular structure and selective theophylline complexation by conformational change of diethyl N,N'-(1,3-phenylene)dicarbamate

The receptor ability of diethyl N,N'-(1,3-phenylene)dicarbamate (1) to form host–guest complexes with theophylline (TEO) and caffeine (CAF) by mechanochemistry was evaluated. The formation of the 1–TEO complex (C12H16N2O4·C7H8N4O2) was preferred and involves the conformational change of one of the ethyl carbamate groups of 1 from the endo conformation to the exo conformation to allow the formation of intermolecular interactions. The formation of an N—H⋯O=C hydrogen bond between 1 and TEO triggers the conformational change of 1. CAF molecules are unable to form an N—H⋯O=C hydrogen bond with 1, making the conformational change and, therefore, the formation of the complex impossible. Conformational change and selective binding were monitored by IR spectroscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The 1–TEO complex was characterized by IR spectroscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Bis[tris(diisobutyldithiocarbamato)-μ3-sulfido-tri-μ2-disulfido-trimolybdenum(IV)] sulfide tetrahydrofuran monosolvate

The title compound, [Mo3(C9H18NS2)3(S2)3S]2S, crystallizes on a general position in the monoclinic space group P21/n (No. 14). The cationic [Mo3S7(S2CNiBu2)3]+ fragments are joined by a monosulfide dianion that forms close S⋯S contacts to each of the disulfide ligands on the side of the Mo3 plane opposite the μ32− ligand. The two Mo3 planes are inclined at an angle of 40.637 (15)°, which gives the assembly an open clamshell-like appearance. One μ6-S2−⋯S22− contact, at 2.4849 (14) Å, is appreciably shorter than the remaining five, which are in the range 2.7252 (13)–2.8077 (14) Å.

Synthesis, crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 4-{(1E)-1-[(carbamothioylamino)imino]ethyl}phenyl propanoate

The title compound, C12H15N3O2S, adopts an E configuration with respect to the C=N bond. The propionate group adopts an antiperiplanar (ap) conformation. There are short intramolecular N—H⋯N and C—H⋯O contacts, forming S(5) and S(6) ring motifs, respectively. In the crystal, molecules are connected into ribbons extending parallel to [010] by pairs of N—H⋯S interactions, forming rings with R22(8) graph-set motifs, and by pairs of C—H⋯S interactions, where rings with the graph-set motif R21(7) are observed. The O atom of the carbonyl group is disordered over two positions, with a refined occupancy ratio of 0.27 (2):0.73 (2). The studied crystal consisted of two domains.

bam

Crystal structure of tris{N,N-diethyl-N'-[(4-nitrophenyl)(oxo)methyl]carbamimidothioato}cobalt(III)

The synthesis, crystal structure, and a Hirshfeld surface analysis of tris{N,N-diethyl-N'-[(4-nitrophenyl)(oxo)methyl]carbamimidothioato}cobalt(III) conducted at 180 K are presented. The complex consists of three N,N-diethyl-N'-[(4-nitrobenzene)(oxo)methyl]carbamimidothioato ligands, threefold symmetrically bonded about the CoIII ion, in approximately octahedral coordination, which generates a triple of individually near planar metallacyclic (Co—S—C—N—C—O) rings. The overall geometry of the complex is determined by the mutual orientation of each metallacycle about the crystallographically imposed threefold axis [dihedral angles = 81.70 (2)°] and by the dihedral angles between the various planar groups within each asymmetric unit [metallacycle to benzene ring = 13.83 (7)°; benzene ring to nitro group = 17.494 (8)°]. The complexes stack in anti-parallel columns about the overline{3} axis of the space group (Poverline{3}), generating solvent-accessible channels along [001]. These channels contain ill-defined, multiply disordered, partial-occupancy solvent. Atom–atom contacts in the crystal packing predominantly (∼96%) involve hydrogen, the most abundant types being H⋯H (36.6%), H⋯O (31.0%), H⋯C (19.2%), H⋯N (4.8%), and H⋯S (4.4%).
