ADHD dad needs to get a job

Brainstorming session for my brother please! Stay-at-home dad for most of the last 15 years has launched the teen and now hopes to find something rewarding that he can do when ADHD translates to everything taking him 5x longer (but is near perfection once it's done). Four-year business degree. Veteran. Some success a long time ago in sales, but never loved the work. Enjoyed a couple of years in tech recruiting because more than anything it seemed he found great satisfaction in helping his clients find just the right match. Otherwise, youth soccer coaching led to becoming a ref at the collegiate level. Got a Salesforce Admin cert but never used it. Learned a ton as the parent of an elite athlete about the realm of sports marketing and sponsorships and contracts and really gets into it.

Has a good head for businessy things and building relationships. He likes helping people, using his brain and problem solving. Very kind and personable guy, logical head, communicates well, a smart and sensitive dude. I think he'd be great in business strategy, maybe athletics administration. But he has so little recent work experience and is pushing 60.

The ADHD means that composing the perfect 20-min business communication can take two hours. Obv this does not translate well to successful work and can make it stressful. I think he takes meds and experiences limited benefit. His happy place is spending hours reading the paper and going down rabbitholes of news analysis.

Given his age and the ADHD time suck problem, what might be out there for him? Even part time? He's healthy, he can travel, he's near a major metro area.

I deleted a whole paragraph of TMI for context, and have shortened that to: His partner makes good money, so this is more about him finding rewarding productive work that he can do to augment the household income.

How parents can help children with ADHD thrive in friendships

Parents of kids with ADHD often say their kids miss social cues, such as when peers are bored, hurt or offended, according to Amori Mikami, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia in Canada. “It can lead to a lot of outbursts or temper tantrums or whining and complaining or arguing with the friend,” she said. Mikami researches peer relationships, specifically focusing on children with ADHD. Additionally, she developed a parental friendship coaching (PFC) model where parents of elementary school-age kids can learn to support their child in making friends.

Support for primary care prescribing for adult ADHD in England: national survey

BackgroundAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, for which there are effective pharmacological treatments that improve symptoms and reduce complications. Guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommend that primary care practitioners prescribe medication for adult ADHD under shared-care agreements with Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS). However, provision remains uneven, with some practitioners reporting a lack of support.AimThis study aimed to describe elements of support, and their availability/use, in primary care prescribing for adult ADHD medication in England to improve access for this underserved population and inform service improvement.Design and settingCross-sectional surveys were used to elicit data from commissioners, health professionals (HPs), and people with lived experience of ADHD (LE) across England about elements supporting pharmacological treatment of ADHD in primary care.MethodThree interlinked cross-sectional surveys were used to ask every integrated care board in England (commissioners), along with convenience samples of HPs and LEs, about prescribing rates, AMHS availability, wait times, and shared-care agreement protocols/policies for the pharmacological treatment of ADHD in primary care. Descriptive analyses, percentages, and confidence intervals were used to summarise responses by stakeholder group. Variations in reported provision and practice were explored and displayed visually using mapping software.ResultsData from 782 responders (42 commissioners, 331 HPs, 409 LEs) revealed differences in reported provision by stakeholder group, including for prescribing (95% of HPs versus 64% of LEs). In all, >40% of responders reported extended AMHS wait times of ≥2 years. There was some variability by NHS region – for example, London had the lowest reported extended wait time (25%), while East of England had the highest (55%).ConclusionElements supporting appropriate shared-care prescribing of ADHD medication via primary care are not universally available in England. Coordinated approaches are needed to address these gaps.

Top 5 Questions about ADHD- From Everyday Health

Everyday Health is gathering the responses of several professionals of the top 5 questions they get regarding ADHD. They asked me to participate. The following are the questions and my answers. Check in with Everyday Health next week to see the compilation of responses.

1. Why are there so many theories about the causes of ADHD? What are the most common?

Any disorder that does not have a known cause is open to a number of theories. People naturally want to know why or want to feel as if it can be prevented in the future. Heredity is believed to be the most commonly accepted cause.

2. How can you explain the value of treatment to resistant parents? For example, “I survived my childhood with ADHD --and I was never diagnosed or treated. Why does my child need ADHD treatment?”

Often children with ADHD have gaps in their education. As they are in and out of focus each day, they miss key points in instruction. As new skills build upon old skills, it can be more and more difficult to learn new tasks where there are gaps in the foundation. This difficulty can make focusing even more difficult, further compounding the problem. Treatment can help reduce or prevent this cycle.

3. What role does a child’s school have in helping him or her with ADHD?

The school can help by providing support and accommodations specific to the particular needs of your child IF it can be determined that the symptoms of ADHD are significantly impacting his or her education. Of course, each school has different criteria for determining if there is a significant impact.

4. Are the medications recommended for ADHD safe for children? What are the potential dangers?

There is not a lot of solid research yet on this topic. While the medications are believed to be safe, they have not been around long enough to fully study long term effects. There are also side effects that may make the medications not worth the benefits in some children. All of that being said, I've seen kids who are finally able to focus after starting medication. Taking the medication improves learning, grades, and self esteem, which has numerous positive long term benefits. Medication is not something to take lightly. Parents must think very carefully weigh the unknown risks of taking the medications verses the possible risks of refusing the medications. There is not one answer that fits all children.

5. What are the most common side effects of ADHD meds?

Weight loss, behavioral changes, and headaches are possible side effects.

Support for ADHD in the Schools

Penny Williams from A Mom's view of ADHD and I decided to join forces this month in an attempt to reach more people through our blogs. I believe that many of my readers would find her blog helpful and I also felt that I could offer some insight into the school perspective to her readers. Penny wrote Make Homework Routine a few weeks ago. If you found that helpful, check out her blog full of more strategies! A Mom's View of ADHD is an excellent resource for parents of children with ADHD. It's written from by a parent going through it and provides excellent insight and strategies. I highly recommend it as a place for parents to go to connect and gain support.

Be sure to check out my article, Support for ADHD in the Schools. I discussed the options available for receiving support in the schools for ADHD such as an IEP or a 504 Plan.

Is It ADHD?

Do you wonder if your child might have ADHD?

More than 5% of children now have a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Parents often look at hyperactive or impulsive behaviors and wonder, “Is this normal or is this ADHD?”  The following charts are made to help parents get a sense of whether their child is exhibiting age appropriate behaviors or if it could be something more.  These charts are not intended to diagnose.  If you have concerns that many of the examples of ADHD describe your child, talk to your doctor or a Psychologist for a formal assessment.

Cardiac Screening Prior to Stimulant Treatment of ADHD: A Survey of US-Based Pediatricians

Over the past decade, drug oversight committees and professional organizations have debated the evidence regarding cardiac screening to identify undiagnosed disorders associated with sudden cardiac death in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder before beginning treatment with stimulants.

How practicing pediatricians have responded to this controversy is not known. We present results from a national sample of pediatricians regarding current attitudes, barriers, and practices for cardiac screening in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder before prescribing stimulants. Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Epilepsy, and Cerebral Palsy in Norwegian Children

Prevalence estimates for neurologic and neurodevelopmental disorders in children vary widely, and there is uncertainty as to what extent the individual disorders overlap. Most previous prevalence studies have been based on survey data and not on specialist-confirmed diagnoses.

This study used nationwide register data to determine the proportions of Norwegian children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy and to study how the disorders overlap. All diagnoses were specialist-confirmed. (Read the full article)

Age, Academic Performance, and Stimulant Prescribing for ADHD: A Nationwide Cohort Study

The impact of relative age at school entry on academic progress and the risk of being diagnosed with ADHD remains controversial. Stimulants are widely used as a therapeutic option for ADHD in the United States and increasingly in Europe.

Relative age among classmates affects academic performance among boys and girls into puberty, as well as children’s risk of being prescribed stimulants for ADHD. This should be taken into account when evaluating children’s performance and behavior in school to prevent unnecessary stimulant prescribing. (Read the full article)

Adolescent ADHD and Adult Physical and Mental Health, Work Performance, and Financial Stress

There are a few longitudinal studies that suggest that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescence is associated with later psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, and impaired work performance.

Adolescent ADHD is associated with a variety of internal and external stresses in adulthood. Consequently, it is essential to focus intervention efforts on adolescents with ADHD to prevent or alleviate adult difficulties in functioning. (Read the full article)
