The hybrid session is the first time the NRC has conducted a public meeting aboard a seagoing vessel. As the Savannah nears the end of a multi-year decommissioning process, the U.S. Maritime Administration submitted the termination plan for NRC review. It spells out how the final steps will be carried out, including thorough checks for any residual radioactivity. The Savannah was defueled in 1971 and its reactor vessel removed at the end of 2022.
