Discrete variations of the fractional Brownian motion in the presence of outliers and an additive noise

Sophie Achard, Jean-François Coeurjolly

Source: Statist. Surv., Volume 4, 117--147.

Abstract:
This paper gives an overview of the problem of estimating the Hurst parameter of a fractional Brownian motion when the data are observed with outliers and/or with an additive noise by using methods based on discrete variations. We show that the classical estimation procedure based on the log-linearity of the variogram of dilated series is made more robust to outliers and/or an additive noise by considering sample quantiles and trimmed means of the squared series or differences of empirical variances. These different procedures are compared and discussed through a large simulation study and are implemented in the R package dvfBm.

Classification of pediatric pneumonia using chest X-rays by functional regression. (arXiv:2005.03243v1 [stat.AP])

An accurate and prompt diagnosis of pediatric pneumonia is imperative for successful treatment intervention. One approach to diagnose pneumonia cases is using radiographic data. In this article, we propose a novel parsimonious scalar-on-image classification model adopting the ideas of functional data analysis. Our main idea is to treat images as functional measurements and exploit underlying covariance structures to select basis functions; these bases are then used in approximating both image profiles and corresponding regression coefficient. We re-express the regression model into a standard generalized linear model where the functional principal component scores are treated as covariates. We apply the method to (1) classify pneumonia against healthy and viral against bacterial pneumonia patients, and (2) test the null effect about the association between images and responses. Extensive simulation studies show excellent numerical performance in terms of classification, hypothesis testing, and efficient computation.

ManifoldOptim: An R Interface to the ROPTLIB Library for Riemannian Manifold Optimization

Manifold optimization appears in a wide variety of computational problems in the applied sciences. In recent statistical methodologies such as sufficient dimension reduction and regression envelopes, estimation relies on the optimization of likelihood functions over spaces of matrices such as the Stiefel or Grassmann manifolds. Recently, Huang, Absil, Gallivan, and Hand (2016) have introduced the library ROPTLIB, which provides a framework and state of the art algorithms to optimize real-valued objective functions over commonly used matrix-valued Riemannian manifolds. This article presents ManifoldOptim, an R package that wraps the C++ library ROPTLIB. ManifoldOptim enables users to access functionality in ROPTLIB through R so that optimization problems can easily be constructed, solved, and integrated into larger R codes. Computationally intensive problems can be programmed with Rcpp and RcppArmadillo, and otherwise accessed through R. We illustrate the practical use of ManifoldOptim through several motivating examples involving dimension reduction and envelope methods in regression.

Intrinsic Riemannian functional data analysis

Zhenhua Lin, Fang Yao.

Source: The Annals of Statistics, Volume 47, Number 6, 3533--3577.

Abstract:
In this work we develop a novel and foundational framework for analyzing general Riemannian functional data, in particular a new development of tensor Hilbert spaces along curves on a manifold. Such spaces enable us to derive Karhunen–Loève expansion for Riemannian random processes. This framework also features an approach to compare objects from different tensor Hilbert spaces, which paves the way for asymptotic analysis in Riemannian functional data analysis. Built upon intrinsic geometric concepts such as vector field, Levi-Civita connection and parallel transport on Riemannian manifolds, the developed framework applies to not only Euclidean submanifolds but also manifolds without a natural ambient space. As applications of this framework, we develop intrinsic Riemannian functional principal component analysis (iRFPCA) and intrinsic Riemannian functional linear regression (iRFLR) that are distinct from their traditional and ambient counterparts. We also provide estimation procedures for iRFPCA and iRFLR, and investigate their asymptotic properties within the intrinsic geometry. Numerical performance is illustrated by simulated and real examples.

Modeling wildfire ignition origins in southern California using linear network point processes

Medha Uppala, Mark S. Handcock.

Source: The Annals of Applied Statistics, Volume 14, Number 1, 339--356.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on spatial and temporal modeling of point processes on linear networks. Point processes on linear networks can simply be defined as point events occurring on or near line segment network structures embedded in a certain space. A separable modeling framework is introduced that posits separate formation and dissolution models of point processes on linear networks over time. While the model was inspired by spider web building activity in brick mortar lines, the focus is on modeling wildfire ignition origins near road networks over a span of 14 years. As most wildfires in California have human-related origins, modeling the origin locations with respect to the road network provides insight into how human, vehicular and structural densities affect ignition occurrence. Model results show that roads that traverse different types of regions such as residential, interface and wildland regions have higher ignition intensities compared to roads that only exist in each of the mentioned region types.

Stratonovich type integration with respect to fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter less than $1/2$

Jorge A. León.

Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 3, 2436--2462.

Abstract:
Let $B^{H}$ be a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $Hin (0,1/2)$ and $p:mathbb{R} ightarrow mathbb{R}$ a polynomial function. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a Stratonovich type stochastic integral with respect to $B^{H}$, whose domain includes the process $p(B^{H})$. That is, an integral that allows us to integrate $p(B^{H})$ with respect to $B^{H}$, which does not happen with the symmetric integral given by Russo and Vallois ( Probab. Theory Related Fields 97 (1993) 403–421) in general. Towards this end, we combine the approaches utilized by León and Nualart ( Stochastic Process. Appl. 115 (2005) 481–492), and Russo and Vallois ( Probab. Theory Related Fields 97 (1993) 403–421), whose aims are to extend the domain of the divergence operator for Gaussian processes and to define some stochastic integrals, respectively. Then, we study the relation between this Stratonovich integral and the extension of the divergence operator (see León and Nualart ( Stochastic Process. Appl. 115 (2005) 481–492)), an Itô formula and the existence of a unique solution of some Stratonovich stochastic differential equations. These last results have been analyzed by Alòs, León and Nualart ( Taiwanese J. Math. 5 (2001) 609–632), where the Hurst paramert $H$ belongs to the interval $(1/4,1/2)$.

Exponential integrability and exit times of diffusions on sub-Riemannian and metric measure spaces

Anton Thalmaier, James Thompson.

Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 3, 2202--2225.

Abstract:
In this article, we derive moment estimates, exponential integrability, concentration inequalities and exit times estimates for canonical diffusions firstly on sub-Riemannian limits of Riemannian foliations and secondly in the nonsmooth setting of $operatorname{RCD}^{*}(K,N)$ spaces. In each case, the necessary ingredients are Itô’s formula and a comparison theorem for the Laplacian, for which we refer to the recent literature. As an application, we derive pointwise Carmona-type estimates on eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators.
