onate Glenn Greenwald Asks “Why Did Saudi Regime & Other Gulf Tyrannies Donate Millions to Clinton Foundation?” Transcript and video. By www.cpa-connecticut.com Published On :: Fri, 23 Sep 2016 18:22:35 +0000 Questions surrounding Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation continue to grow. On Sunday, Democratic National Committee interim chairperson Donna Brazile defended Clinton’s meetings as secretary of state with Clinton Foundation donors, saying, "When Republicans meet with their donors, with their supporters, their activists, they call it a meeting. When Democrats do that, they call it a conflict." Donna Brazile’s comments come in response to an Associated Press investigation revealing that while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state, more than half of the private citizens she met with during the reporting period had donated to the Clinton Foundation. The AP investigation comes after a three-year battle to gain access to State Department calendars. The analysis shows that at least 85 of 154 people Hillary Clinton had scheduled phone or in-person meetings with were foundation donors. We speak to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept. His most recent piece is headlined "Why Did the Saudi Regime and Other Gulf Tyrannies Donate Millions to the Clinton Foundation?" Thanks to the United Nations and dozens of artists, however, the internet just got a little more beautiful. In late March, the UN put a call out to artists to help combat the spread of COVID-19. They sought creatives to create content around six areas of WHO and UN priority actions: personal hygiene, social distancing, knowing the symptoms, spreading kindness, myth-busting, and doing more/donating. Tens of thousands of artists answered the call in two weeks, and now the COVID-19 Response Creative Content Hub is available for browsing. onate Tracking isotopically labeled oxidants using boronate-based redox probes [Methods and Resources] By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: 2020-05-08T03:41:14-07:00 Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species have been implicated in many biological processes and diseases, including immune responses, cardiovascular dysfunction, neurodegeneration, and cancer. These chemical species are short-lived in biological settings, and detecting them in these conditions and diseases requires the use of molecular probes that form stable, easily detectable, products. The chemical mechanisms and limitations of many of the currently used probes are not well-understood, hampering their effective applications. Boronates have emerged as a class of probes for the detection of nucleophilic two-electron oxidants. Here, we report the results of an oxygen-18–labeling MS study to identify the origin of oxygen atoms in the oxidation products of phenylboronate targeted to mitochondria. We demonstrate that boronate oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, peroxymonocarbonate, hypochlorite, or peroxynitrite involves the incorporation of oxygen atoms from these oxidants. We therefore conclude that boronates can be used as probes to track isotopically labeled oxidants. This suggests that the detection of specific products formed from these redox probes could enable precise identification of oxidants formed in biological systems. We discuss the implications of these results for understanding the mechanism of conversion of the boronate-based redox probes to oxidant-specific products. Full Article

onate Immune Status in Very Preterm Neonates By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2012-03-26T00:07:46-07:00 The very preterm neonate is more susceptible to bacterial infection; this is thought to be due to immaturity of the innate immune response.Monocytes have an anti-inflammatory profile at birth and are hyporesponsive to inflammatory stimuli in fetuses born very prematurely. This reflects the response to the pro-inflammatory events leading to preterm birth as well as gestational immaturity. (Read the full article) Full Article
onate Reference Ranges for Lymphocyte Counts of Neonates: Associations Between Abnormal Counts and Outcomes By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2012-04-16T00:07:49-07:00 High or low lymphocyte counts at birth have been reported as a marker for subsequent intraventricular hemorrhage, retinopathy of prematurity, and periventricular leukomalacia. However, this conclusion is questionable because reference ranges for lymphocyte counts have not been constructed by using large numbers of neonates. This study provides reference ranges for lymphocytes of neonates. A high count at birth is associated with early onset sepsis and IVH and a low count with early onset sepsis, IVH, and retinopathy of prematurity. Among neonates with birth asphyxia, a low count identifies a high risk for death. (Read the full article) Full Article

onate Prediction of Neonatal Outcomes in Extremely Preterm Neonates By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2013-09-23T08:26:04-07:00 Extremely preterm infants are at high risk of neonatal mortality or morbidities. Existing prediction models focus on mortality, specific morbidities, or composite mortality and morbidity outcomes and ignore differences in outcome severity.A simple and practical statistical model was developed that can be applied on the first day after NICU admission to predict outcome severity spanning from no morbidity to mortality. The model is highly discriminative (C-statistic = 90%) and internally valid. (Read the full article) Full Article
onate Catheter Dwell Time and CLABSIs in Neonates With PICCs: A Multicenter Cohort Study By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2013-11-11T00:07:43-08:00 Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are essential to deliver life-saving treatment to neonates. Longer PICC dwell times may increase the risk of central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in neonates, but previous studies have yielded inconsistent results, likely due to different study designs, analytic methods, and small sample sizes. The risk of CLABSIs increases during the 2 weeks after PICC insertion and remains elevated for the catheter duration. These data support daily review of PICC necessity, optimization of catheter maintenance practices, and consideration of novel strategies to prevent CLABSIs. (Read the full article) Full Article
