Abstract:
This paper gives an overview of the problem of estimating the Hurst parameter of a fractional Brownian motion when the data are observed with outliers and/or with an additive noise by using methods based on discrete variations. We show that the classical estimation procedure based on the log-linearity of the variogram of dilated series is made more robust to outliers and/or an additive noise by considering sample quantiles and trimmed means of the squared series or differences of empirical variances. These different procedures are compared and discussed through a large simulation study and are implemented in the R package dvfBm.

Abstract:
Let $B^{H}$ be a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $Hin (0,1/2)$ and $p:mathbb{R} ightarrow mathbb{R}$ a polynomial function. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a Stratonovich type stochastic integral with respect to $B^{H}$, whose domain includes the process $p(B^{H})$. That is, an integral that allows us to integrate $p(B^{H})$ with respect to $B^{H}$, which does not happen with the symmetric integral given by Russo and Vallois ( Probab. Theory Related Fields 97 (1993) 403–421) in general. Towards this end, we combine the approaches utilized by León and Nualart ( Stochastic Process. Appl. 115 (2005) 481–492), and Russo and Vallois ( Probab. Theory Related Fields 97 (1993) 403–421), whose aims are to extend the domain of the divergence operator for Gaussian processes and to define some stochastic integrals, respectively. Then, we study the relation between this Stratonovich integral and the extension of the divergence operator (see León and Nualart ( Stochastic Process. Appl. 115 (2005) 481–492)), an Itô formula and the existence of a unique solution of some Stratonovich stochastic differential equations. These last results have been analyzed by Alòs, León and Nualart ( Taiwanese J. Math. 5 (2001) 609–632), where the Hurst paramert $H$ belongs to the interval $(1/4,1/2)$.

Abstract:
Many papers in the early part of Brown’s career focused on the admissibility or otherwise of estimators of a vector parameter. He established that inadmissibility of invariant estimators in three and higher dimensions is a general phenomenon, and found deep and beautiful connections between admissibility and other areas of mathematics. This review touches on several of his major contributions, with a focus on his celebrated 1971 paper connecting admissibility, recurrence and elliptic partial differential equations.

This article gives a panoramic survey of the general area of parametric statistical inference, decision theory and foundations of statistics for the period 1965–2010 through the lens of Larry Brown’s contributions to varied aspects of this massive area. The article goes over sufficiency, shrinkage estimation, admissibility, minimaxity, complete class theorems, estimated confidence, conditional confidence procedures, Edgeworth and higher order asymptotic expansions, variational Bayes, Stein’s SURE, differential inequalities, geometrization of convergence rates, asymptotic equivalence, aspects of empirical process theory, inference after model selection, unified frequentist and Bayesian testing, and Wald’s sequential theory. I’m coming to the party late—last weekend, for the first but not the last time, I watched Manish Acharya’s comedy, Loins of Punjab Presents. Behan____, what a film! 

I will not rehearse the synopsis or plot, partly because of the lateness of the hour, but also because it is available here. Instead, let me note quickly that the comedy keeps ticking, and the attention to detail in all matters, from the plot to the casting, makes this film a pleasure to watch.

Let me use one scene to make a point about where the film is coming from. Ishitta Sharma, playing a demure, Gujju girl called Preeti Patel, is one of the competitors in the Desi Idol competition in New Jersey. We have watched her sing beautifully, and we have watched her stay silent, eyes downcast, as her family-members make fools of themselves. But there’s a moment later in the film, when an older, wily competitor, played with classy ease by Shabana Azmi, tries to manipulate her. And suddenly, in the blink of an eye, Preeti Patel turns upon the Shabana character. It’s as if she always had a dagger hiding in her hand.

When I saw that, I thought that there was a similar strength in the movie I was watching. It’s all laughs but it has a quicksilver intelligence within. It is a declaration of independence by the desi diaspora—and what is great is that it celebrates this freedom by mocking, and loving, almost everything in sight.

South Africa is a mineral-rich country with a diverse geology and a long history of mining. The rich history of mining activities includes the extraction of coal from the Ecca Group Sediments of the Karoo Supergroup (250 Ma), gold and uranium from the Witwatersrand Supergroup (2900 Ma), as well as platinum, uranium, tin and lead from the layered Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) (2150 Ma). The extraction of gold, copper, tin, lead and rare earth minerals also took place in the Archean rocks of Swazium age (3500–3000 Ma). The historical mining records have either not been accurately recorded or have been lost over time. This has resulted in significant geohazard risk during infrastructure development, especially in and around historical mining towns, such as Johannesburg and Ermelo. These geohazard risks require careful appraisal and quantification prior to any infrastructure design or construction.

This case study aims to set out the development aspects of the Multi-Faceted Geophysical Modelling Systems approach, which was used by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) during an investigation of undermined ground for the historical coal-mining town of Ermelo in South Africa. The N11/N2 ring road was planned to go around Ermelo to ensure mobility between major routes, whilst still maintaining town access.

The systems approach used a combination of airborne geophysics (Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic System (VTEM^TM) and magnetics), generally used in mining exploration, land-based and borehole geophysics, borehole water testing, and ground-truthing. The approach was continuous and iterative, building on the data at hand and reducing unnecessary investigations while eliminating the possibility of anomalies being missed, as in the case of conventional discrete drilling. The investigation ensured that 100% of the route was comprehensively investigated with a high confidence in the geological and geophysical data, and concomitant mitigation of infrastructure risk.

The Multi-Faceted Geophysical Modelling Systems approach was successfully used to identify a previously unknown 1 x 1 m mining stope cavity at 90 m depth and a 3 x 5 m access tunnel at 24 m depth in a timely and cost-effective manner. Seven reverse-circulation percussion boreholes confirmed the structural integrity of these underground cavities, as well as the structural geology along the centreline. Based on the great success achieved in identifying shallow anomalies, this Multi-Faceted Geophysical Modelling Systems approach is now being considered for field trails on the dolomitic formations and the Wild Coast greenfields road project where there are large historical slumps and many fault lines.

Kellogg Brown & Root LLC (KBR), a global engineering, construction and services company based in Houston, pleaded guilty today to charges related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) for its participation in a decade-long scheme to bribe Nigerian government officials to obtain engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts. The EPC contracts to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities on Bonny Island, Nigeria, were valued at more than $6 billion.
