However, the judgment is reversed in part where plaintiff had not yet had the opportunity to introduce evidence relating to its trade dress claims.

WASHINGTON — Latinos and immigrants are at least twice as likely to lack health insurance coverage as the overall population in three central Kansas City metro counties, a new Migration Policy Institute (MPI) study reveals. In fact, they are four times as likely to be uninsured in Johnson County, Kansas.

This gap that has significant implications for the region, as Latinos and immigrants will form an ever-growing share of the area’s labor force and tax base amid anticipated declines in the native-born, non-Latino population.

Abstract:
A classical approach for approximating expectations of functions w.r.t. partially known distributions is to compute the average of function values along a trajectory of a Metropolis–Hastings (MH) Markov chain. A key part in the MH algorithm is a suitable acceptance/rejection of a proposed state, which ensures the correct stationary distribution of the resulting Markov chain. However, the rejection of proposals causes highly correlated samples. In particular, when a state is rejected it is not taken any further into account. In contrast to that we consider a MH importance sampling estimator which explicitly incorporates all proposed states generated by the MH algorithm. The estimator satisfies a strong law of large numbers as well as a central limit theorem, and, in addition to that, we provide an explicit mean squared error bound. Remarkably, the asymptotic variance of the MH importance sampling estimator does not involve any correlation term in contrast to its classical counterpart. Moreover, although the analyzed estimator uses the same amount of information as the classical MH estimator, it can outperform the latter in scenarios of moderate dimensions as indicated by numerical experiments.

In this study the pharmacokinetics of metronidazole in preterm neonates was investigated by measurement of the drug in dried blood-spot samples. A dosage regimen is proposed that should result in more appropriate, less frequent dosing in the most preterm neonates. (Read the full article)

Parents are increasingly following alternative immunization schedules. Current studies suggest up to 21% of parents in the United States are intentionally delaying or refusing some or all of the recommended early-childhood vaccines.

This is the first study to use Immunization Information System data to quantify the proportion of children consistently delaying receipt of vaccines. Consistent-limiting children were found to have lower levels of recommended vaccines. (Read the full article)

Obesity among youth can have immediate health effects as well as longer-term consequences during adulthood. Overweight/obese children and adolescents are much more likely than normal-weight children to become overweight/obese adults.

This large, multisite longitudinal study examines patterns of exit from and entry into obesity between childhood and adolescence. Socioeconomic factors, body image, television habits, and parental obesity were important predictors of whether children remained obese or became obese. (Read the full article)

The frequency of cardiac arrest is significantly lower in children than in adults, rendering the delivery of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation more difficult. Metronome-based studies in adults showed improvement in adequate compression rate, with a detrimental effect on the depth of chest compressions.

This is the first pediatric study to confirm that the use of a metronome during cardiopulmonary resuscitation significantly improves the delivery of adequate rate without affecting the compression depth. This effect was more prominent among medical students and pediatric residents and fellows than nurses. (Read the full article)

Periodontitis as a biofilm-associated inflammatory disease is highly prevalent worldwide. It severely affects oral health and yet closely links to systemic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Porphyromonas gingivalis as a ‘keystone' periodontopathogen drives the shift of microbe-host symbiosis to dysbiosis, and critically contributes to the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Persisters are a tiny subset of biofilm-associated microbes highly tolerant to lethal treatment of antimicrobials, and notably metronidazole-tolerant P. gingivalis persisters have recently been identified by our group. This study further explored the interactive profiles of metronidazole-treated P. gingivalis persisters (M-PgPs) with human gingival epithelial cells (HGECs). P. gingivalis cells (ATCC 33277) at stationary phase were treated with lethal dosage of metronidazole (100 μg/ml, 6 hours) for generating M-PgPs. The interaction of M-PgPs with HGECs was assessed by microscopy, flow cytometry, cytokine profiling and qPCR. We demonstrated that the overall morphology and ultra-cellular structure of M-PgPs remained unchanged. Importantly, M-PgPs maintained the capabilities to adhere to and invade into HGECs. Moreover, M-PgPs significantly suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in HGECs at a comparable level with the untreated P. gingivalis cells, through the thermo-sensitive components. The present study reveals that P. gingivalis persisters induced by lethal treatment of antibiotics could maintain their capabilities to adhere to and invade into human gingival epithelial cells, and perturb the innate host responses. Novel strategies and approaches need to be developed for tackling P. gingivalis and favourably modulating the dysregulated immuno-inflammatory responses for oral/periodontal health and general wellbeing.
