Readability Algorithms Should Be Tools, Not Targets

The web is awash with words. They’re everywhere. On websites, in emails, advertisements, tweets, pop-ups, you name it. More people are publishing more copy than at any point in history. That means a lot of information, and a lot of competition. In recent years a slew of ‘readability’ programs have appeared to help us tidy up the things we write. (Grammarly, Readable, and Yoast are just a handful that come to mind.

Prolific, the (Much Better) Mechnical Turk Alternative

Prolific is a crowd-sourcing platform for running studies. In contrast to the widely-used Mechanical Turk, it’s specific to studies, has a much better interface, pricing that’s fair to participants, and useful filters to find the right people for your study. Amazon's Mechanical Turk is used for many empirical studies published in the visualization literature, but […]

Non-associative Frobenius algebras for simply laced Chevalley groups. (arXiv:2005.02625v1 [math.RA] CROSS LISTED)

We provide an explicit construction for a class of commutative, non-associative algebras for each of the simple Chevalley groups of simply laced type. Moreover, we equip these algebras with an associating bilinear form, which turns them into Frobenius algebras. This class includes a 3876-dimensional algebra on which the Chevalley group of type E8 acts by automorphisms. We also prove that these algebras admit the structure of (axial) decomposition algebras.

Regular Tur'an numbers of complete bipartite graphs. (arXiv:2005.02907v2 [math.CO] UPDATED)

Let $mathrm{rex}(n, F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that is regular and does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. We give lower bounds on $mathrm{rex}(n, F)$, that are best possible up to a constant factor, when $F$ is one of $C_4$, $K_{2,t}$, $K_{3,3}$ or $K_{s,t}$ when $t>s!$.

An embedding of the Morse boundary in the Martin boundary. (arXiv:2004.14624v2 [math.GR] UPDATED)

We construct a one-to-one continuous map from the Morse boundary of a hierarchically hyperbolic group to its Martin boundary. This construction is based on deviation inequalities generalizing Ancona's work on hyperbolic groups. This provides a possibly new metrizable topology on the Morse boundary of such groups. We also prove that the Morse boundary has measure 0 with respect to the harmonic measure unless the group is hyperbolic.

$L^p$-regularity of the Bergman projection on quotient domains. (arXiv:2004.02598v2 [math.CV] UPDATED)

We relate the $L^p$-mapping properties of the Bergman projections on two domains in $mathbb{C}^n$, one of which is the quotient of the other under the action of a finite group of biholomorphic automorphisms. We use this relation to deduce the sharp ranges of $L^p$-boundedness of the Bergman projection on certain $n$-dimensional model domains generalizing the Hartogs triangle.

EMSx: A Numerical Benchmark for Energy Management Systems. (arXiv:2001.00450v2 [math.OC] UPDATED)

Inserting renewable energy in the electric grid in a decentralized manneris a key challenge of the energy transition. However, at local scale, both production and demand display erratic behavior, which makes it delicate to match them. It is the goal of Energy Management Systems (EMS) to achieve such balance at least cost. We present EMSx, a numerical benchmark for testing control algorithms for the management of electric microgrids equipped with a photovoltaic unit and an energy storage system. EMSx is made of three key components: the EMSx dataset, provided by Schneider Electric, contains a diverse pool of realistic microgrids with a rich collection of historical observations and forecasts; the EMSx mathematical framework is an explicit description of the assessment of electric microgrid control techniques and algorithms; the EMSx software EMSx.jl is a package, implemented in the Julia language, which enables to easily implement a microgrid controller and to test it. All components of the benchmark are publicly available, so that other researchers willing to test controllers on EMSx may reproduce experiments easily. Eventually, we showcase the results of standard microgrid control methods, including Model Predictive Control, Open Loop Feedback Control and Stochastic Dynamic Programming.

Mirror Symmetry for Non-Abelian Landau-Ginzburg Models. (arXiv:1812.06200v3 [math.AG] UPDATED)

We consider Landau-Ginzburg models stemming from groups comprised of non-diagonal symmetries, and we describe a rule for the mirror LG model. In particular, we present the non-abelian dual group, which serves as the appropriate choice of group for the mirror LG model. We also describe an explicit mirror map between the A-model and the B-model state spaces for two examples. Further, we prove that this mirror map is an isomorphism between the untwisted broad sectors and the narrow diagonal sectors for Fermat type polynomials.

Bernoulli decomposition and arithmetical independence between sequences. (arXiv:1811.11545v2 [math.NT] UPDATED)

In this paper we study the following set[A={p(n)+2^nd mod 1: ngeq 1}subset [0.1],] where $p$ is a polynomial with at least one irrational coefficient on non constant terms, $d$ is any real number and for $ain [0,infty)$, $a mod 1$ is the fractional part of $a$. By a Bernoulli decomposition method, we show that the closure of $A$ must have full Hausdorff dimension.

Exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions. (arXiv:1810.03731v2 [math.RT] UPDATED)

We study the geometry and topology of exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions from an explicit, combinatorial point of view. This includes a detailed analysis of the structure of the irreducible components and their intersections as well as the construction of an explicit affine paving. Moreover, we compute the ring structure of cohomology by constructing a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the exotic Springer fiber. This homotopy equivalent space admits an action of the type C Weyl group inducing Kato's original exotic Springer representation on cohomology. Our results are described in terms of the diagrammatics of the one-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra (also known as the blob algebra). This provides a first step in generalizing the geometric versions of Khovanov's arc algebra to the exotic setting.

On the Total Curvature and Betti Numbers of Complex Projective Manifolds. (arXiv:1807.11625v2 [math.DG] UPDATED)

We prove an inequality between the sum of the Betti numbers of a complex projective manifold and its total curvature, and we characterize the complex projective manifolds whose total curvature is minimal. These results extend the classical theorems of Chern and Lashof to complex projective space.

Local Moduli of Semisimple Frobenius Coalescent Structures. (arXiv:1712.08575v3 [math.DG] UPDATED)

We extend the analytic theory of Frobenius manifolds to semisimple points with coalescing eigenvalues of the operator of multiplication by the Euler vector field. We clarify which freedoms, ambiguities and mutual constraints are allowed in the definition of monodromy data, in view of their importance for conjectural relationships between Frobenius manifolds and derived categories. Detailed examples and applications are taken from singularity and quantum cohomology theories. We explicitly compute the monodromy data at points of the Maxwell Stratum of the A3-Frobenius manifold, as well as at the small quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian G(2,4). In the latter case, we analyse in details the action of the braid group on the monodromy data. This proves that these data can be expressed in terms of characteristic classes of mutations of Kapranov's exceptional 5-block collection, as conjectured by one of the authors.

On the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system. (arXiv:2005.03617v1 [math.AP])

We prove small data modified scattering for the Vlasov-Poisson system in dimension $d=3$ using a method inspired from dispersive analysis. In particular, we identify a simple asymptotic dynamic related to the scattering mass.

On abelianity lines in elliptic $W$-algebras. (arXiv:2005.03579v1 [math-ph])

We present a systematic derivation of the abelianity conditions for the $q$-deformed $W$-algebras constructed from the elliptic quantum algebra $mathcal{A}_{q,p}(widehat{gl}(N)_{c})$. We identify two sets of conditions on a given critical surface yielding abelianity lines in the moduli space ($p, q, c$). Each line is identified as an intersection of a countable number of critical surfaces obeying diophantine consistency conditions. The corresponding Poisson brackets structures are then computed for which some universal features are described.

Asymptotic behavior of Wronskian polynomials that are factorized via $p$-cores and $p$-quotients. (arXiv:2005.03516v1 [math.CA])

In this paper we consider Wronskian polynomials labeled by partitions that can be factorized via the combinatorial concepts of $p$-cores and $p$-quotients. We obtain the asymptotic behavior for these polynomials when the $p$-quotient is fixed while the size of the $p$-core grows to infinity. For this purpose, we associate the $p$-core with its characteristic vector and let all entries of this vector simultaneously tend to infinity. This result generalizes the Wronskian Hermite setting which is recovered when $p=2$.

A reaction-diffusion system to better comprehend the unlockdown: Application of SEIR-type model with diffusion to the spatial spread of COVID-19 in France. (arXiv:2005.03499v1 [q-bio.PE])

A reaction-diffusion model was developed describing the spread of the COVID-19 virus considering the mean daily movement of susceptible, exposed and asymptomatic individuals. The model was calibrated using data on the confirmed infection and death from France as well as their initial spatial distribution. First, the system of partial differential equations is studied, then the basic reproduction number, R0 is derived. Second, numerical simulations, based on a combination of level-set and finite differences, shown the spatial spread of COVID-19 from March 16 to June 16. Finally, scenarios of unlockdown are compared according to variation of distancing, or partially spatial lockdown.

Sums of powers of integers and hyperharmonic numbers. (arXiv:2005.03407v1 [math.NT])

In this paper, we derive a formula for the sums of powers of the first $n$ positive integers that involves the hyperharmonic numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind. Then, using an explicit representation for the hyperharmonic numbers, we generalize this formula to the sums of powers of an arbitrary arithmetic progression. Moreover, as a by-product, we express the Bernoulli polynomials in terms of the hyperharmonic polynomials and the Stirling numbers of the second kind.

Revised dynamics of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction model. (arXiv:2005.03325v1 [nlin.CD])

The main aim of this paper is to detect dynamical properties of the Gy"orgyi-Field model of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction. The corresponding three-variable model given as a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations depends on one parameter, the flow rate. As certain values of this parameter can give rise to chaos, the analysis was performed in order to identify different dynamics regimes. Dynamical properties were qualified and quantified using classical and also new techniques. Namely, phase portraits, bifurcation diagrams, the Fourier spectra analysis, the 0-1 test for chaos, and approximate entropy. The correlation between approximate entropy and the 0-1 test for chaos was observed and described in detail. Moreover, the three-stage system of nested subintervals of flow rates, for which in every level the 0-1 test for chaos and approximate entropy was computed, is showing the same pattern. The study leads to an open problem whether the set of flow rate parameters has Cantor like structure.

Riemann-Hilbert approach and N-soliton formula for the N-component Fokas-Lenells equations. (arXiv:2005.03319v1 [nlin.SI])

In this work, the generalized $N$-component Fokas-Lenells(FL) equations, which have been studied by Guo and Ling (2012 J. Math. Phys. 53 (7) 073506) for $N=2$, are first investigated via Riemann-Hilbert(RH) approach. The main purpose of this is to study the soliton solutions of the coupled Fokas-Lenells(FL) equations for any positive integer $N$, which have more complex linear relationship than the analogues reported before. We first analyze the spectral analysis of the Lax pair associated with a $(N+1) imes (N+1)$ matrix spectral problem for the $N$-component FL equations. Then, a kind of RH problem is successfully formulated. By introducing the special conditions of irregularity and reflectionless case, the $N$-soliton solution formula of the equations are derived through solving the corresponding RH problem. Furthermore, take $N=2,3$ and $4$ for examples, the localized structures and dynamic propagation behavior of their soliton solutions and their interactions are discussed by some graphical analysis.

New constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs on abelian groups. (arXiv:2005.03183v1 [math.CO])

In this paper, we give new constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs on abelian groups as generalizations of a series of known constructions: the construction of covering extended building sets in finite fields by Xia (1992), the product construction of Menon-Hadamard difference sets by Turyn (1984), and the construction of Paley type partial difference sets by Polhill (2010). Then, we obtain new large families of strongly regular Cayley graphs of Latin square type or negative Latin square type.

Cross-Lingual Semantic Role Labeling with High-Quality Translated Training Corpus. (arXiv:2004.06295v2 [cs.CL] UPDATED)

Many efforts of research are devoted to semantic role labeling (SRL) which is crucial for natural language understanding. Supervised approaches have achieved impressing performances when large-scale corpora are available for resource-rich languages such as English. While for the low-resource languages with no annotated SRL dataset, it is still challenging to obtain competitive performances. Cross-lingual SRL is one promising way to address the problem, which has achieved great advances with the help of model transferring and annotation projection. In this paper, we propose a novel alternative based on corpus translation, constructing high-quality training datasets for the target languages from the source gold-standard SRL annotations. Experimental results on Universal Proposition Bank show that the translation-based method is highly effective, and the automatic pseudo datasets can improve the target-language SRL performances significantly.

Watching the World Go By: Representation Learning from Unlabeled Videos. (arXiv:2003.07990v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED)

Recent single image unsupervised representation learning techniques show remarkable success on a variety of tasks. The basic principle in these works is instance discrimination: learning to differentiate between two augmented versions of the same image and a large batch of unrelated images. Networks learn to ignore the augmentation noise and extract semantically meaningful representations. Prior work uses artificial data augmentation techniques such as cropping, and color jitter which can only affect the image in superficial ways and are not aligned with how objects actually change e.g. occlusion, deformation, viewpoint change. In this paper, we argue that videos offer this natural augmentation for free. Videos can provide entirely new views of objects, show deformation, and even connect semantically similar but visually distinct concepts. We propose Video Noise Contrastive Estimation, a method for using unlabeled video to learn strong, transferable single image representations. We demonstrate improvements over recent unsupervised single image techniques, as well as over fully supervised ImageNet pretraining, across a variety of temporal and non-temporal tasks. Code and the Random Related Video Views dataset are available at https://www.github.com/danielgordon10/vince

Measuring Social Bias in Knowledge Graph Embeddings. (arXiv:1912.02761v2 [cs.CL] UPDATED)

It has recently been shown that word embeddings encode social biases, with a harmful impact on downstream tasks. However, to this point there has been no similar work done in the field of graph embeddings. We present the first study on social bias in knowledge graph embeddings, and propose a new metric suitable for measuring such bias. We conduct experiments on Wikidata and Freebase, and show that, as with word embeddings, harmful social biases related to professions are encoded in the embeddings with respect to gender, religion, ethnicity and nationality. For example, graph embeddings encode the information that men are more likely to be bankers, and women more likely to be homekeepers. As graph embeddings become increasingly utilized, we suggest that it is important the existence of such biases are understood and steps taken to mitigate their impact.

Multi-group Multicast Beamforming: Optimal Structure and Efficient Algorithms. (arXiv:1911.08925v2 [eess.SP] UPDATED)

This paper considers the multi-group multicast beamforming optimization problem, for which the optimal solution has been unknown due to the non-convex and NP-hard nature of the problem. By utilizing the successive convex approximation numerical method and Lagrangian duality, we obtain the optimal multicast beamforming solution structure for both the quality-of-service (QoS) problem and the max-min fair (MMF) problem. The optimal structure brings valuable insights into multicast beamforming: We show that the notion of uplink-downlink duality can be generalized to the multicast beamforming problem. The optimal multicast beamformer is a weighted MMSE filter based on a group-channel direction: a generalized version of the optimal downlink multi-user unicast beamformer. We also show that there is an inherent low-dimensional structure in the optimal multicast beamforming solution independent of the number of transmit antennas, leading to efficient numerical algorithm design, especially for systems with large antenna arrays. We propose efficient algorithms to compute the multicast beamformer based on the optimal beamforming structure. Through asymptotic analysis, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of the multicast beamformers as the number of antennas grows, and in turn, provide simple closed-form approximate multicast beamformers for both the QoS and MMF problems. This approximation offers practical multicast beamforming solutions with a near-optimal performance at very low computational complexity for large-scale antenna systems.
