Combination of XEOL, TR-XEOL and HB-T interferometer at the TPS 23A X-ray nanoprobe for exploring quantum materials

In this study, a combination of X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), time-resolved XEOL (TR-XEOL) and the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HB-T) interferometer at the Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) 23A X-ray nanoprobe beamline for exploring quantum materials is demonstrated. On the basis of the excellent spatial resolution rendered using a nano-focused beam, emission distributions of artificial micro-diamonds can be obtained by XEOL maps, and featured emission peaks of a selected local area can be obtained by XEOL spectra. The hybrid bunch mode of the TPS not only provides a sufficiently high peak power density for experiments at each beamline but also permits high-quality temporal domain (∼200 ns) measurements for investigating luminescence dynamics. From TR-XEOL measurements, the decay lifetime of micro-diamonds is determined to be approximately 16 ns. Furthermore, the XEOL spectra of artificial micro-diamonds can be investigated by the HB-T interferometer to identify properties of single-photon sources. The unprecedented strategy of combining XEOL, TR-XEOL and the HB-T interferometer at the X-ray nanoprobe beamline will open new avenues with significant characterization abilities for unraveling the emission mechanisms of single-photon sources for quantum materials.

Sub-micrometre focusing of intense 100 keV X-rays with multilayer reflective optics

A high-flux sub-micrometre focusing system was constructed using multilayer focusing mirrors in Kirkpatrick–Baez geometry for 100 keV X-rays. The focusing mirror system had a wide bandwidth of 5% and a high peak reflectivity of 74%. Performance was evaluated at the undulator beamline BL05XU of SPring-8, which produced an intense 100 keV X-ray beam with a bandwidth of 1%. When the light source was focused directly in both vertical and horizontal directions, the beam size was measured to be 0.32 µm (V) × 5.3 µm (H) with a flux of 1 × 1012 photons s−1. However, when a limited horizontal slit was used to form a secondary source, the focusing beam size decreased to 0.25 µm (V) × 0.26 µm (H) with a flux of 6 × 1010 photons s−1. The 200 nm line and space patterns of a Siemens star chart made of tantalum were clearly resolved by the absorption contrast of the focused beam. This 100 keV focusing system is applicable to various fields of nondestructive analyses with sub-micrometre resolutions.

Automated spectrometer alignment via machine learning

During beam time at a research facility, alignment and optimization of instrumentation, such as spectrometers, is a time-intensive task and often needs to be performed multiple times throughout the operation of an experiment. Despite the motorization of individual components, automated alignment solutions are not always available. In this study, a novel approach that combines optimisers with neural network surrogate models to significantly reduce the alignment overhead for a mobile soft X-ray spectrometer is proposed. Neural networks were trained exclusively using simulated ray-tracing data, and the disparity between experiment and simulation was obtained through parameter optimization. Real-time validation of this process was performed using experimental data collected at the beamline. The results demonstrate the ability to reduce alignment time from one hour to approximately five minutes. This method can also be generalized beyond spectrometers, for example, towards the alignment of optical elements at beamlines, making it applicable to a broad spectrum of research facilities.

Development and commissioning of a broadband online X-ray spectrometer for the SXFEL Facility

A broadband online X-ray spectrometer has been designed and commissioned at the SUD beamline of the Shanghai Soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser Facility, which can deliver both SASE and seeded FEL pulses to user experiments, spanning the photon energy range of 50–620 eV. The resolving powers of the spectrometer calibrated via online measurement at 92 eV and 249 eV are ∼20000 and ∼15000, respectively, and the absolute photon energy is characterized by an electron time-of-flight spectrometer. The high energy resolution provided by the spectrometer can differentiate the fine structure in the FEL spectrum, to determine its pulse length.

A 1D imaging soft X-ray spectrometer for the small quantum systems instrument at the European XFEL

A 1D imaging soft X-ray spectrometer installed on the small quantum systems (SQS) scientific instrument of the European XFEL is described. It uses movable cylindrical constant-line-spacing gratings in the Rowland configuration for energy dispersion in the vertical plane, and Wolter optics for simultaneous 1D imaging of the source in the horizontal plane. The soft X-ray fluorescence spectro-imaging capability will be exploited in pump–probe measurements and in investigations of propagation effects and other nonlinear phenomena.

Hyperspectral full-field quick-EXAFS imaging at the ROCK beamline for monitoring micrometre-sized heterogeneity of functional materials under process conditions

Full-field transmission X-ray microscopy has been recently implemented at the hard X-ray ROCK–SOLEIL quick-EXAFS beamline, adding micrometre spatial resolution to the second time resolution characterizing the beamline. Benefiting from a beam size versatility due to the beamline focusing optics, full-field hyperspectral XANES imaging has been successfully used at the Fe K-edge for monitoring the pressure-induced spin transition of a 150 µm × 150 µm Fe(o-phen)2(NCS)2 single crystal and the charge of millimetre-sized LiFePO4 battery electrodes. Hyperspectral imaging over 2000 eV has been reported for the simultaneous monitoring of Fe and Cu speciation changes during activation of a FeCu bimetallic catalyst along a millimetre-sized catalyst bed. Strategies of data acquisition and post-data analysis using Jupyter notebooks and multivariate data analysis are presented, and the gain obtained using full-field hyperspectral quick-EXAFS imaging for studies of functional materials under process conditions in comparison with macroscopic information obtained by non-spatially resolved quick-EXAFS techniques is discussed.

In the title complex, [Ru(C10H8N2)2(C6H6N2O)(H2O)](CF3SO3)2, the central RuII atom is sixfold coordinated by two bidentate 2,2'-bi­pyridine, an isonic­otinamide ligand, and a water mol­ecule in a distorted octa­hedral environment with tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonate ions completing the outer coordination sphere of the complex. Hydrogen bonding involving the water mol­ecule and weak π–π stacking inter­actions between the pyridyl rings in adjacent mol­ecules contribute to the alignment of the complexes in columns parallel to the c axis.

2-Amino-5-oxo-4-(thio­phen-2-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetra­hydro-4H-chromene-3-carbo­nitrile

The crystal structure of the title compound, C14H12N2O2S, reveals two symmetrically independent mol­ecules within the asymmetric unit. Each mol­ecule contains a chromenone core attached to a 2-thio­phene ring, cyano, and amino groups. The 2-thio­phene ring of one of the two mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit was found to be disordered over two positions, with the major component having a site occupancy factor of 0.837 (2). The 2-thio­phene ring is nearly orthogonal to the fused 4H-pyran ring, with dihedral angles between the two sets of planes being 89.5 (5) and 89.63 (8)°. Inter­molecular hydrogen bonding, involving N—H⋯N and N—H⋯O inter­actions, creates two distinct motifs leading to the formation of a two-dimensional supra­molecular network along the crystallographic ac plane.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of dieth­yl (3aS,3a1R,4S,5S,6R,6aS,7R,9aS)-3a1,5,6,6a-tetra­hydro-1H,3H,4H,7H-3a,6:7,9a-di­epoxy­benzo[de]isochromene-4,5-di­carboxyl­ate

In the title compound, C18H22O7, two hexane rings and an oxane ring are fused together. The two hexane rings tend toward a distorted boat conformation, while the tetra­hydro­furan and di­hydro­furan rings adopt envelope conformations. The oxane ring is puckered. The crystal structure features C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which link the mol­ecules into a three-dimensional network. According to a Hirshfeld surface study, H⋯H (60.3%) and O⋯H/H⋯O (35.3%) inter­actions are the most significant contributors to the crystal packing.

Synthesis, structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 2-oxo-2H-chromen-6-yl 4-tert-butyl­benzoate: work carried out as part of the AFRAMED project

In the title compound, C20H18O4, the dihedral angle between the 2H-chromen-2-one ring system and the phenyl ring is 89.12 (5)°. In the crystal, the mol­ecules are connected through C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds to generate [010] double chains that are reinforced by weak aromatic π–π stacking inter­actions. The unit-cell packing can be described as a tilted herringbone motif. The H⋯H, H⋯O/O⋯H, H⋯C/C⋯H and C⋯C contacts contribute 46.7, 24.2, 16.7 and 7.6%, respectively, to its Hirshfeld surface.

Structural characterization of a new samarium–sodium heterometallic coordination polymer

Lanthanide-containing materials are of inter­est in the field of crystal engin­eering because of their unique properties and distinct structure types. In this context, a new samarium–sodium heterometallic coordination polymer, poly[tetra­kis­(μ2-2-formyl-6-meth­oxy­phenolato)samarium(III)sodium(I)], {[SmNa(C8H7O3)4]·solvent}n (Sm-1), was synthesized and crystallized via slow evaporation from a mixture of ethanol and aceto­nitrile. The compound features alternating SmIII and NaI ions, which are linked by ortho-vanillin (o-vanillin) ligands to form a mono-periodic chain-like coordination polymer. The chains propagate along the [001] direction. Residual electron density of disordered solvent mol­ecules in the void space could not be reasonably modeled, thus the SQUEEZE function was applied. The structural, vibrational, and optical properties are reported.

The crystal structures and Hirshfeld surface analyses of three similar compounds are reported. Methyl 4-[4-(di­fluoro­meth­oxy)phen­yl]-2,7,7-trimethyl-5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexa­hydro­quinoline-3-carboxyl­ate, (C21H23F2NO4), (I), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 8, while isopropyl 4-[4-(di­fluoro­meth­oxy)phen­yl]-2,6,6-trimethyl-5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexa­hydro­quinoline-3-carb­oxyl­ate, (C23H27F2NO4), (II) and tert-butyl 4-[4-(di­fluoro­meth­oxy)phen­yl]-2,6,6-trimethyl-5-oxo-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexa­hydro­quinoline-3-carboxyl­ate, (C24H29F2NO4), (III) crystallize in the ortho­rhom­bic space group Pbca with Z = 8. In the crystal structure of (I), mol­ecules are linked by N—H⋯O and C—H⋯O inter­actions, forming a tri-periodic network, while mol­ecules of (II) and (III) are linked by N—H⋯O, C—H⋯F and C—H⋯π inter­actions, forming layers parallel to (002). The cohesion of the mol­ecular packing is ensured by van der Waals forces between these layers. In (I), the atoms of the 4-di­fluoro­meth­oxy­phenyl group are disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.647 (3): 0.353 (3) ratio. In (III), the atoms of the dimethyl group attached to the cyclo­hexane ring, and the two carbon atoms of the cyclo­hexane ring are disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.646 (3):0.354 (3) ratio.

In the structure of the title compound, C22H22N4O4·C3H7NO·H2O, the entire tricyclic system is approximately planar except for the carbon atom bearing the two methyl groups; the meth­oxy­phenyl ring is approximately perpendicular to the tricycle. All seven potential hydrogen-bond donors take part in classical hydrogen bonds. The main mol­ecule and the DMF combine to form broad ribbons parallel to the a axis and roughly parallel to the ab plane; the water mol­ecules connect the residues in the third dimension.

Ethyl 2-[(2-oxo-2H-chromen-6-yl)­oxy]acetate, C13H12O5, a member of the pharmacologically important class of coumarins, crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group in the form of sheets, within which mol­ecules are related by inversion centers and 21 axes. Multiple C—H⋯O weak hydrogen-bonding inter­actions reinforce this pattern. The planes of these sheets are oriented in the approximate direction of the ac face diagonal. Inter­sheet inter­actions are a combination of coumarin system π–π stacking and additional C—H⋯O weak hydrogen bonds between ethyl acet­oxy groups.

Synthesis, structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl penta­noate

In the title compound, C14H14O4, the dihedral angle between the coumarin ring system (r.m.s deviation = 0.016 Å) and the penta­noate ring is 36.26 (8)°. A short intra­molecular C—H⋯O contact of 2.40 Å is observed. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals that 46.1% of the inter­molecular inter­actions are from H⋯H contacts, 28.6% are from H⋯O/O⋯H contacts and 14.7% are from H⋯C/C⋯H.

A hard X-ray single-shot spectrometer comprising thin, bent Si crystals has been developed for the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL), for detailed analysis of ultrafast 4.5–17 keV XFEL pulses with a high spectral resolution. This instrument facilitates shot-to-shot spectral structure monitoring and optimization of the operating conditions of the XFEL owing to its ability to provide comprehensive data on the spectral properties and fluctuations of self-amplified spontaneous emission, monochromatic and seeded XFEL modes.

Operation model of a skew-symmetric split-crystal neutron interferometer

The observation of neutron interference using a triple Laue interferometer formed by two separate crystals opens the way to the construction and operation of skew-symmetric interferometers with extended arm separation and length. The specifications necessary for their successful operation are investigated here: most importantly, how the manufacturing tolerance and crystal alignments impact the interference visibility. In contrast with previous studies, both incoherent sources and the three-dimensional operation of the interferometer are considered. It is found that, with a Gaussian Schell model of an incoherent source, the integrated density of the particles leaving the interferometer is the same as that yielded by a coherent Gaussian source having a radius equal to the coherence length.

Characterization of sub-micrometre-sized voids in fixed human brain tissue using scanning X-ray microdiffraction

Using a 5 µm-diameter X-ray beam, we collected scanning X-ray microdiffraction in both the small-angle (SAXS) and the wide-angle (WAXS) regimes from thin sections of fixed human brain tissue from Alzheimer's subjects. The intensity of scattering in the SAXS regime of these patterns exhibits essentially no correlation with the observed intensity in the WAXS regime, indicating that the structures responsible for these two portions of the diffraction patterns, which reflect different length scales, are distinct. SAXS scattering exhibits a power-law behavior in which the log of intensity decreases linearly with the log of the scattering angle. The slope of the log–log curve is roughly proportional to the intensity in the SAXS regime and, surprisingly, inversely proportional to the intensity in the WAXS regime. We interpret these observations as being due to the presence of sub-micrometre-sized voids formed during dehydration of the fixed tissue. The SAXS intensity is due largely to scattering from these voids, while the WAXS intensity derives from the secondary structures of macromolecular material surrounding the voids. The ability to detect and map the presence of voids within thin sections of fixed tissue has the potential to provide novel information on the degradation of human brain tissue in neurodegenerative diseases.

Five-analyzer Johann spectrometer for hard X-ray photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy at the Inner Shell Spectroscopy beamline at NSLS-II: design, alignment and data acquisition

Here, a recently commissioned five-analyzer Johann spectrometer at the Inner Shell Spectroscopy beamline (8-ID) at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is presented. Designed for hard X-ray photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy, the spectrometer achieves a resolution in the 0.5–2 eV range, depending on the element and/or emission line, providing detailed insights into the local electronic and geometric structure of materials. It serves a diverse user community, including fields such as physical, chemical, biological, environmental and materials sciences. This article details the mechanical design, alignment procedures and data-acquisition scheme of the spectrometer, with a particular focus on the continuous asynchronous data-acquisition approach that significantly enhances experimental efficiency.

High-transmission spectrometer for rapid resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering (rRIXS) maps

The design and first results of a high-transmission soft X-ray spectrometer operated at the X-SPEC double-undulator beamline of the KIT Light Source are presented. As a unique feature, particular emphasis was placed on optimizing the spectrometer transmission by maximizing the solid angle and the efficiencies of spectrometer gratings and detector. A CMOS detector, optimized for soft X-rays, allows for quantum efficiencies of 90% or above over the full energy range of the spectrometer, while simultaneously offering short readout times. Combining an optimized control system at the X-SPEC beamline with continuous energy scans (as opposed to step scans), the high transmission of the spectrometer, and the fast readout of the CMOS camera, enable the collection of entire rapid resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering maps in less than 1 min. Series of spectra at a fixed energy can be taken with a frequency of up to 5 Hz. Furthermore, the use of higher-order reflections allows a very wide energy range (45 to 2000 eV) to be covered with only two blazed gratings, while keeping the efficiency high and the resolving power E/ΔE above 1500 and 3000 with low- and high-energy gratings, respectively.
