In low dimensions, we assume full rank of the regressor matrix and present expressions for the cumulative distribution function as well as the densities of the absolutely continuous parts of the estimator. Our results are presented for the case of normally distributed errors, but do not hinge on this assumption and can easily be generalized. Additionally, we establish an explicit formula for the correspondence between the Lasso and the least-squares estimator. We derive analogous results for the distribution in less explicit form in high dimensions where we make no assumptions on the regressor matrix at all. In this setting, we also investigate the model selection properties of the Lasso and show that possibly only a subset of models might be selected by the estimator, completely independently of the observed response vector. The method jointly estimates an undirected graph and homogeneous communities of nodes. The structure of the communities is taken into account when estimating the graph and at the same time, the structure of the graph is accounted for when estimating communities of nodes. The procedure uses a joint group graphical lasso approach with community detection-based grouping, such that some groups of edges co-occur in the estimated graph. The grouping structure is unknown and is estimated based on community detection algorithms. Theoretical derivations regarding graph convergence and sparsistency, as well as accuracy of community recovery are included, while the method's empirical performance is illustrated in an fMRI context, as well as with simulated examples. Second, because of the constraints on the model parameters, some estimated parameters are close to zero in real-data examples, which may not objectively reveal the correlation relationship. For the first drawback, an $r$ states random environment process based on the binomial thinning operator and the Poisson marginal is introduced. For the second drawback, we propose a generalized $r$ states random environment integer-valued autoregressive model based on the binomial thinning operator to model fluctuations of data. Yule–Walker and conditional maximum likelihood estimates are considered and their performances are assessed via simulation studies. A fully Bayesian approach based on the g-prior method has been considered for inference concerns. An intensive Monte Carlo simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed methodology and the maximum likelihood estimators. The proposed model was considered for the analysis of a real dataset on the number of bids received by $126$ U.S. firms between 1978–1985, and the impact of choosing different prior distributions for the regression coefficients has been studied. A sensitivity analysis to detect influential points has been performed based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence. A general comparison with some well-known regression models for discrete data has been presented. Full Article

Coefficients such as the RV coefficient, the distance covariance (dCov) coefficient and kernel based coefficients are being used by different research communities. Scientists use these coefficients to test whether two random vectors are linked. Once it has been ascertained that there is such association through testing, then a next step, often ignored, is to explore and uncover the association’s underlying patterns. This article provides a survey of various measures of dependence between random vectors and tests of independence and emphasizes the connections and differences between the various approaches. After providing definitions of the coefficients and associated tests, we present the recent improvements that enhance their statistical properties and ease of interpretation. We summarize multi-table approaches and provide scenarii where the indices can provide useful summaries of heterogeneous multi-block data. We illustrate these different strategies on several examples of real data and suggest directions for future research. Full Article

This work is focused on both the identification of risk factors and the prediction of healthcare-associated infections in intensive-care units by means of machine-learning methods. The aim is to support decision making addressed at reducing the incidence rate of infections. In this field, it is necessary to deal with the problem of building reliable classifiers from imbalanced datasets. We propose a clustering-based undersampling strategy to be used in combination with ensemble classifiers. A comparative study with data from 4616 patients was conducted in order to validate our proposal. We applied several single and ensemble classifiers both to the original dataset and to data preprocessed by means of different resampling methods. The results were analyzed by means of classic and recent metrics specifically designed for imbalanced data classification. They revealed that the proposal is more efficient in comparison with other approaches. Full Article

We propose estimation of the parameters of the NEF models through the method of moments and also by the maximum likelihood method, which is performed via an Expectation-Maximization algorithm. Comput. Graph. Statist. 5 (1996) 1–25] stratified resampling method. Carpenter, Ckiffird and Fearnhead’s [ IEE Proc. Radar Sonar Navig. 146 (1999) 2–7] systematic resampling method is similar in structure but can fail to converge depending on the order of the input samples. We introduce a new resampling algorithm based on a stochastic rounding technique of [In 42nd IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science ( Las Vegas , NV , 2001) (2001) 588–597 IEEE Computer Soc.], which shares some attractive properties of systematic resampling, but which exhibits negative association and, therefore, converges irrespective of the order of the input samples. We confirm a conjecture made by [ J. Comput. Graph. Statist. 5 (1996) 1–25] that ordering input samples by their states in $mathbb{R}$ yields a faster rate of convergence; we establish that when particles are ordered using the Hilbert curve in $mathbb{R}^{d}$, the variance of the resampling error is ${scriptstylemathcal{O}}(N^{-(1+1/d)})$ under mild conditions, where $N$ is the number of particles. However, existing ad hoc uses of PCA in both multivariate regression (multiple outcomes) and multiple regression (multiple predictors) lack theoretical justification. The differences in the statistical properties of PCAs in these two regression settings are not well understood. In this paper we provide theoretical results on the power of PCA in genetic association testings in both multiple phenotype and SNP-set settings. The multiple phenotype setting refers to the case when one is interested in studying the association between a single SNP and multiple phenotypes as outcomes. The SNP-set setting refers to the case when one is interested in studying the association between multiple SNPs in a SNP set and a single phenotype as the outcome. We demonstrate analytically that the properties of the PC-based analysis in these two regression settings are substantially different. We show that the lower order PCs, that is, PCs with large eigenvalues, are generally preferred and lead to a higher power in the SNP-set setting, while the higher-order PCs, that is, PCs with small eigenvalues, are generally preferred in the multiple phenotype setting. We also investigate the power of three other popular statistical methods, the Wald test, the variance component test and the minimum $p$-value test, in both multiple phenotype and SNP-set settings. This article proposes an estimator of the SNP heritability of the trait, defined here as the fraction of the variance of the trait explained by the SNPs in the study. The proposed GWAS heritability (GWASH) estimator is easy to compute, highly interpretable and is consistent as the number of SNPs and the sample size increase. More importantly, it can be computed from summary statistics typically reported in GWAS, not requiring access to the original data. The estimator takes full account of the linkage disequilibrium (LD) or correlation between the SNPs in the study through moments of the LD matrix, estimable from auxiliary datasets. Unlike other proposed estimators in the literature, we establish the theoretical properties of the GWASH estimator and obtain analytical estimates of the precision, allowing for power and sample size calculations for SNP heritability estimates and forming a firm foundation for future methodological development.
