Abstract:
We present and compare some nonparametric estimation methods (wavelet and/or spline-based) designed to recover a one-dimensional piecewise-smooth regression function in both a fixed equidistant or not equidistant design regression model and a random design model. Wavelet methods are known to be very competitive in terms of denoising and compression, due to the simultaneous localization property of a function in time and frequency. However, boundary assumptions, such as periodicity or symmetry, generate bias and artificial wiggles which degrade overall accuracy. Simple methods have been proposed in the literature for reducing the bias at the boundaries. We introduce new ones based on adaptive combinations of two estimators. The underlying idea is to combine a highly accurate method for non-regular functions, e.g., wavelets, with one well behaved at boundaries, e.g., Splines or Local Polynomial. We provide some asymptotic optimal results supporting our approach. All the methods can handle data with a random design. We also sketch some generalization to the multidimensional setting. To study the performance of the proposed approaches we have conducted an extensive set of simulations on synthetic data. An interesting regression analysis of two real data applications using these procedures unambiguously demonstrates their effectiveness.

Global cross-border bank claims continued to expand rapidly, growing at 9% year on year. As in previous quarters, the expansion was mainly due to claims on the non-bank sector, which grew at 12% year on year. The growth in claims on non-bank financial institutions was particularly strong (+17%). European banks' cross-border lending, which went through a prolonged contraction after the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-09, has been expanding again since the start of 2018.

US dollar credit to non-bank borrowers outside the United States grew by 5% year on year at end-September 2019, to reach $12.1 trillion. Euro-denominated credit outside the euro area continued to expand at a fast pace (9%). In contrast, the growth rate of yen-denominated credit outside Japan fell to 1%. Strong debt securities issuance drove expansions in US dollar and euro credit to emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs). US dollar credit to EMDEs grew at an annual rate of 3% (to reach $3.8 trillion); euro credit to EMDEs expanded by 9% (to reach €0.7 trillion).

Pharmacologic treatment with sapropterin dihydrochloride (6R-tetrahydrobiopterin; BH4) has been an effective option for some phenylketonuria patients since its approval by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2007 and the European Medicines Agency in 2008.

This retrospective multicenter study revealed the long-term effects of sapropterin on metabolic control, dietary tolerance, and the outcome of BH4-responsive phenylketonuria patients harboring specific phenotypes and genotypes. Adoptees living in Sweden are at increased risk of suicide attempt compared with nonadopted individuals, although factors mediating this risk are largely unknown. Whether adoption status represents a risk for adoptees living in the United States remains unresolved.

The odds for reported suicide attempt are elevated in US adoptees relative to nonadoptees, the first demonstration of increased risk in US adoptees placed in nonrelative families. This risk is partially mediated by other established risk factors for suicide attempt. (Read the full article)
