like 'She does not like my sense of humour...' By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 08 Mar 2016 01:48:16 GMT Dear Diana,I am a happy-go-lucky person who loves to make people laugh. Even when things go wrong, instead of fretting, I prefer to let go. My girlfriend, however, finds this habit of mine irritating. She just does not know how to laugh aloud. She's always serious and focussed. This is causing a lot of tiffs between us. She finds my sense of humour atrocious. I mean no harm to anyone, so I do not know why she can't chuckle along with me? We have had a lot of discussions, but she feels I go overboard. I call her Miss Stiff Upper Lip and she gets so annoyed that she stops talking to me for days. I just want to see her happy and laughing. My girl tells me she has always been like this so she can't be like me. I have told her to loosen up, but she is adamant. What do I do? How do I tell her that I am trying hard to please her? Why does she find me offensive? She also tells me that she often feels that I have inhaled laughing gas.— Waman Dear Waman,Laughter can go a long way in maintaining a happy relationship. Your girl is the opposite of you. She does not feel the need to have a sense of humour or is perhaps unwilling to let go around you and be relaxed and fun-loving. You have told her to be relaxed, but it cannot be an overnight change. You need loads of patience as she will take time to be like you. At the same time, try to find out what has made her so serious. Is there something on her front that is troubling her? Make her feel comfortable and tell her it is alright to let go sometimes and have a good time with you. Full Article
like 'He likes his bike more than me...' By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 14 Mar 2016 00:46:19 GMT Dear Diana,My guy is obsessed with his bike. He cares more for it than me. When I started going out with him seven months ago, I use to enjoy the fun rides. We used to take off for long drives. It was a case of me, him and his bike. But over time, I got bored of the rides, especially after his bike broke down once in the middle of the night. We had to face some harrowing times till it was fixed. After this incident, I had told him I no longer wanted to go on those long bike rides. He then stopped asking me out and would go for a spin with his group of biker buddies. Initially, I was indifferent, but now it is getting to me. He has been spending more and more time with his pals than with me. We have been squabbling a lot over this, but he says that nothing can come in the way of his bike and him. He says he gives me time also so there is no reason to complain. I know he is hurt after the comments I passed about him and his bike. His behaviour towards me changed. What do I do now? Tell him to choose between me and his bike?– Prachi Dear Prachi,It is clear that your boyfriend is hurt. It is a guy thing and he feels you will not understand his obsession for bikes. If you feel you went overboard in your resentment for his love for his bike, why don't you apologise? Or talk things out and settle the issue in an amicable way. This will also enable him to strike a balance between you, his bike and his buddies. Also, you were well aware of his love for bikes since the time you two got together, so there is no point cribbing now. Learn to live with it. Full Article
like 'We like the same girl...' By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 16 Mar 2016 00:30:37 GMT Dear Diana,I find myself in an unusual predicament. My best friend and I have fallen for the same girl. We met her at a birthday party of a common friend. He introduced us to her. We both got along well with her and kept in touch. But somewhere down the line, I got serious about her. My pal then started behaving odd with me. He said he was in love with her and had already expressed his feelings for her. All this has led to a dent in our friendship of over 10 years. Now we are both wooing her and we are waiting to know who she will finally choose. Each one of us has asked the girl who she likes. But she says she needs time to make up her mind. What do I do? I can't see myself away from her. I am hoping that she chooses me. At the same time, I am puzzled that even though she knows we both have the hots for her, she is playing along with both of us. Is she serious about us?— Vishesh Dear VisheshYou can live on hope and love, but chances are this girl is going to dump you both. She is well aware that you two are interested in her, so she is playing along. She is enjoying the attention she is getting from you two guys. At the end, the girl will go with someone else. Her answer that she needs time to think is a clear giveaway. This woman is not interested in either of you. Get the hint and get going with your life. It is strange that even though she is well aware of the affections of both you guys, she is playing along. You cannot trust this woman. You need to tell your pal also not to be blinded in love and see the real picture. Full Article
like 'My guy's parents don't like me...' By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 23 Apr 2016 02:33:56 GMT Dear Diana,I am 26 and plan to get married to this guy I have known for the last three years. His parents, however, detest me. They are aware that we intend to tie the knot, but they still feel their son will not go against their wishes. His family feels I am not suitable for him. They refuse to explain why. They feel I am not their type — whatever it means. Six months ago, we had planned on a Arya Samaj wedding, but he backed out at the last minute. I then told him we should have a court marriage. He said if he were to marry, he did not want to do anything on the sly. With every passing day, I find his behaviour changing. He is also behaving strange. I think he doesn’t love me anymore. What should I do?— Sancheeti Illustration/Uday Mohite Dear Sancheeti,It appears that this man is not interested in marriage. If he was, he would not dilly-dally about committing to you. He might be in a relationship with you, but is he really serious about you? It seems like he does not want to infuriate his family. His backing out at the last minute is a clear sign that he will bow to his family’s wishes at the end. You will be the one nursing a broken heart as his folks will fix his marriage somewhere else. He needs to make it clear if he is willing to go against the wishes of his family. If his behaviour towards you has changed lately, it’s a clear sign that things are amiss. You can’t trust this man, so be wary and make it clear to him. He needs to tell you where you stand in his list of priorities. Full Article
like 'My girlfriend does not like my sister...' By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 25 Apr 2016 01:59:26 GMT Dear Diana,I have been with this girl for almost a year. Things are going fine between us except that she does not get along with my sister. She just did not gel with her from day one. I thought things would improve over time, but things are going downhill between them. She is my elder sister and has been a mother figure to me ever since our mother passed away when we were young. How do I make her resolve her differences with my sister? I hold my sister in high regards, so it is important that she gives us our blessings. We plan to get married next year. I have been trying to make them sit down and resolve their differences, but it is proving to be tough for me. Last week, I took them to a mall, but they ended up fighting with each other. I think it is an ego issue between them.– Yuvi Illustration/Uday Mohite Dear Yuvi,You are caught between these two women and it is difficult to please one as then you are offending the other. You say it is an ego issue, so you need to settle their differences with great tact. Listen to what each of them has to say individually and then resolve their differences. At the same time, these two women need to realise that both of them are important to you. There is no question of offending any one of them. You three need to sit down with an open mind and deliberate on what are the issues that are causing heartburn. You say the two women just did not click from day one. In such a scenario, it is then important to live and let live. If the two are constantly going to be at loggerheads, a reconciliation will be impossible. In such a scenario, you will need to give them space while you be the common factor.Diana will solve it! Full Article
like 'I don't know if she likes me...' By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 29 Apr 2016 00:30:34 GMT Dear Diana,I recently changed jobs and on my first day in the new office, I met this wonderful woman. She proved to be of great help to me. She made me feel comfortable and we got along well. She is a workaholic and an ambitious person. We often sit in office late as she is eager to finish off the paperwork. As we are part of a legal team, there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be done. I was attracted to her the moment I saw her, but now I am in love with her. I do not know how to tell her that I care for her. I have been dropping hints, but she is not reciprocating. The other day we were in the office till 10 pm and I suggested that we catch a bite. But she said no as it would get too late. I do not know if she is playing hard to get. How do I get to know what is on her mind?– Rehan Illustration/Uday Mohite Dear Rehan,First, you need to find out if there is anyone on her scene. Only then can you think of planning a future with her. There may be someone special in her life, so that could be the reason, she is not reacting. Or perhaps, she is so engrossed in work that she has no time to romance. It could also be that she just refuses to react. She may have her own reasons, so meanwhile you can continue with dropping hints. You are still relatively new in the organisation, so do not mess up things. It will have an impact on your personal as well as professional life. For now, just go with the flow, and only after it is clear that there is no one on her scene, make the move. She also may not want to rush into a relationship, so is taking time. For now, be patient. Full Article
like Here's how to work well with your ex, just like Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 09 Apr 2018 03:09:06 GMT Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone "We're still friends" is a common line one has heard several exes say. But how comfortably does a post-break-up relationship translate to working in the same office, where situations can lead to high-tension scenarios? Actors and exes Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone surely seem to have cracked the code, as the duo has worked on two films post calling it quits, the 2013 hit Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Tamasha (2015). The actors will also walk the ramp for a charity fashion show for designer Manish Malhotra later this month. How did they get to this point? "The biggest challenge in dealing with exes [or with anyone really] is that we don't leave the past in the past and allow it to affect our present and future. We start seeing people through a lens of our opinions and interpretations. When working with exes, it is important to have a heightened commitment to be mindful and be in the moment and not create conflicts with the ex - the source of which is very likely to be our past-based filters," says life coach Milind Jadhav. Jadhav feels, that a simple, yet powerful, way of dealing with your ex is to set your work priorities and do just what works for you. But do men and women react to a situation such as this in different ways? "Men tend to be patronising and vindictive. Women, on the other hand, can either withdraw or go hostile," says Dr Harish Shetty, psychiatrist, Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital. Dr Shetty feels that there's no perfect closure to any relationship - something from the past always lingers. There's nothing like neutral emotions. And the most untoward moments are when you are alone for a long time at your workplace. "Working with exes is a difficult situation to deal with. All offices have cultural activities, which involve dancing and drinking, and it is uncomfortable and risky to be together in such situations. Sometimes, these involve bringing along your current partners. Then there are birthday parties of colleagues and meeting common friends, or work-related travel. Work brings back past memories when you are doing similar tasks. Excessive withdrawal or excessive involvement can happen at a workspace without the person consciously doing it," says Dr Shetty. "Navigating uncomfortable conversations is purely a matter of how one 'listens' to one's ex. The best way is to do so without judgement, as if you do not know that person, as opposed to 'I know who s/he really is," sums up Jadhav. Famous exes who work together>> Actors Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory, have dated in the past. Cuoco went on to marry (and divorce) someone else. The two still remain friends and a popular on-screen couple.>> Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the founders of the couture giant Dolce & Gabbana, broke up in 2005 and continue to run the label together. "Everything is exactly the same. But no sex!" said Gabbana in an interview about their work relationship. Case in point"A couple broke up in college and ended up working for the same company. Everything was fine till they went for an office picnic where they had to dance. She called me up for advice and decided to refuse to dance. When they returned, he sent her a WhatsApp message for 'old times' sake'. She was tempted, but kept away. From then on, she knew exactly what to do. The key is to manage the initial trepidation. If you cross that phase, the resolve becomes stronger. You can also take the help of your current partner if they are supportive," says Dr Shetty. Dos and don'ts>> Your focus should only be your work.>> Work in groups.>> Don't move to your past. No personal chats, keep your conversations strictly related to work. Keep away from sharing nostalgic memories.>> Socialise along with office groups to create a buffer between you.>> Don't share old photographs.>> Don't discuss your present life.>> Don't wish on occasions beyond what is essential.>> Don't praise the other's attire, looks and any attribute not related to work. >> Avoid inviting each other to any other place, even for a casual conversation.>> Don't attend a post-work coffee or drink alone. Don't stay on longer than the work demands.>> Don't make any personal comments. If one person does, make it clear that you wish to stick to work-related talk.>> Don't use your intimate details to make loose comments. like Padmini Kolhapure: Like a hero, Rishi Kapoor saved me from fire By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 1 May 2020 01:32:50 GMT It is hard to believe that I will not see him again, in person. The worst part is that I couldn't be there with him and his family for the final rites. I met him in the latter part of 2019. He was jovial. I remember looking at him and thinking that the worst phase of his life is behind him. There wasn't an iota of [weakness] in his eyes. One couldn't, from his body language, gauge that he was enduring any pain or difficulty. The unfortunate turn of events was unexpected. More than being his co-star, I was a fan. I loved Rishi and Neetu, as a couple, and wouldn't miss a single film of the duo. For me, the turning point [in my career] came when I signed a movie with him. Rishi was the one who recommended my name to Nasir Hussain, and that's how I landed up in Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai. The first shot that we did together was for the song Poocho na yaar kya hua. I remember it vividly. I had to do a dance sequence and then hug him. I was shivering because I was a fan. We shot [Hoga tumse pyara kaun] on a train, and it was a surreal experience. It was hot, and we were trying to look our best, and do the best that we could. Unfortunately, my scarf caught fire, and, like a true hero, Rishi ran towards me and rescued me. He was a foodie. I'd get prawns and fish curry to the sets and we would eat together. More than him, we loved his Punjabi lunch that Neetu would send. Neetu would send healthy food, but she never knew that he'd, in fact, be eating his co-stars' meals. He is going to be missed. My heart goes out to Ranbir and Ridhima. like Poonam Dhillon: Like all Kapoors, Rishi loved food By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 1 May 2020 01:37:26 GMT I have lost count of the number of films I did with Rishi Kapoor, especially in the early '80s. There were movies like Biwi-O-Biwi (1981), Tawaif (1985), Sitamgar (1985), Zamana (1985), Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986), Dosti Dushmani (1986) and many more. I was a newbie then, but he was willing to work with fresh faces. At that time, he was the only star who had no qualms about teaming up with novices. I would tell him that he deserved to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for collaborating with the maximum number of new heroines. He could rattle off names [of all those he worked with], and would often wonder where some of them disappeared. He was a natural and spontaneous actor, one who would laugh and fool around with the unit off camera, but instantly [transform] into the character when [we] rolled. You could see the passion in his eyes as he enacted scenes. Like all Kapoors, he too loved his food. The most distinct memory I have is going to RK Studios and [enjoying] the lavish spread and hospitality of the Kapoors. I was in touch with him even when he was in the US for treatment. If I messaged him late at night, he would wonder why I was awake at that unearthly hour. Former minister Arun Jaitley, who passed away last year, was also seeking the same treatment at the same hospital in New York. As I also knew him, Rishi would often tell me that he would invite Jaitley to his home for a meal. When he came back, we caught up with each other. He was not pretentious. He would not hide that he loved his drink. His wife Neetu would ensure that he had healthy meals, but, as soon as she would leave the room, he would quickly take a bite of [the food he was forbidden from eating]. He was childlike. like Nakuul Mehta on BAE Control: Lot like Black Mirror, but with comedy By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 5 May 2020 01:42:40 GMT His female fans have missed seeing him on television ever since he announced his sabbatical last year. Now, Nakuul Mehta is back for a date with his admirers, albeit on the web. The actor's latest offering, BAE Control, explores the idea of having the perfect relationship by controlling a partner's emotions through an app. As he wins praise for his act in the sci-fi comedy, Mehta discusses transitioning from TV to digital entertainment. Edited excerpts from the interview. A blend of sci-fi and rom-com, the show is a far cry from what you've headlined in the past.I have spent over seven years in television. So, over the past one year of my sabbatical, I have been trying to explore different mediums. I have been a fan of the work Dice Media has been doing, be it Little Things or What the Folks. Their audience is starkly different from the one I cater to on television. When they narrated the idea about controling another person's emotions through an app, it sounded crazy. But who knows, in the future, this may be the order of the day! The series seems similar to an episode of Black Mirror. Agree? The series shows how technology will change the way humans interact in the future. In fact, if one compares [the behavioural patterns] of our parents, our generation and Gen-Z, it is evident how human interaction has changed and not necessarily for the better. People interact not only face-to-face, but also over the dark web. So, [controlling one's partner] could be the future. To me, it all seemed like a Black Mirror episode, but this one has elements of comedy. Given a choice, would you consider controlling your partner's emotions with an app?No, relationships are based on trust and have no place for [manipulation]. However, I am old-school in matters of the heart and have never even used a dating app. So, I may not be the right audience for this. On a bad day, when you don't know how to deal with your spouse, you might be tempted. If this were to happen in the near future, what would be the flipside? That we would lose touch with each other as human beings. It's ironic that this show has released at a time when we are all under lockdown and craving human interaction. It is making us yearn for our families and friends. If not for this lesson, we would have headed down a road where we were looking for the perfect relationship and finding the perfect app to control the imperfections. like 5 Years Of Piku: What made Irrfan Khan's Rana Chaudhary so likeable and charming? By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 8 May 2020 04:10:00 GMT Shoojit Sircar's Piku is a film that has been described as a comedy. But none of the conversations (mostly revolving around constipation) that happen between the characters in the film are remotely funny. Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone's incessant arguments escalate to constant bickering and screechy fights, and surprisingly, we laugh. We laugh at how cantankerous a man can be and how cranky a woman can be. Amid this pandemonium, there was a character that was both immensely likeable and charming, Rana Chaudhary, played by the immortal and inimitable Irrfan Khan. Rana himself hailed from a dysfunctional family, so for him to relate to Piku's relationship with her father wasn't tough, but it was indeed nightmarish for him to take a journey with these characters from Delhi to Kolkatta. This was certainly not the road trip he expected or wanted to experience. His was a role that was soaked in inherent goodness. He had a taxi service and his drivers were always on time. But nobody wanted to travel with Piku, she was an explosion waiting to happen and was a stickler for precision and perfection, she could very well be suffering from OCD. But Rana is the only one who sees her niceness and says to all his drivers she's not bad at heart. As the journey begins, he too begins to understand this family and how they function on a daily basis. Any man could lose his sanity staying with them, Khan almost does and explodes at Bhaskar in one scene, leaving him silent and shocked. But a few moments later, we see him helping the man in successfully taking a dump. He has constipation and feels nothing in the morning. Khan gives some suggestions and they finally work. Bhaskar finally cracks a smile after staying solemn throughout the film! The smile is because of Rana, and not Piku! This cracker of a film also offered us a very unique love story. Right till the end we don't know whether Piku and Rana have developed feelings for each other or not. Given the character she is, she's not easily impressed and she tells this to him at least twice in the film. It would have been interesting to see Rana's reaction when Bhaskar passed away, he died a peaceful death as he wished and wanted, and all his friends and relatives also celebrate the same instead of being choked. Is this finale of Piku strikingly similar to Khan? He achieved everything in his illustrious career an actor aspires for, both in India and Internationally. His contribution to Cinema can never be forgotten, and he will always be alive with the characters he left for all of us. We all are collectively mourning, but we also need to celebrate the fact that he also passed away peacefully, leaving tears in the eyes but a smile on the lips! like FWICE General Secretary expresses concern on resuming shootings; says it will be like digging our own grave By Published On :: Thu, 07 May 2020 11:40:48 GMT With the increasing cases of the novel coronavirus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended the lockdown till May 17. The lockdown first commenced on March 25 for a 21 day period. But had to be extended owing to the increasing cases. However, the lockdown has badly hit the economy of the country with several people going out of a job. One industry that has completely shut down is the entertainment industry. The cinema halls were the first one to shut down in the country. Speaking to a tabloid about resuming Bollywood movies shoots, Ashok Dubey, the General Secretary of Federation of Western Indian Cine employees said that they spoke to CINTAA recently and are making guidelines on how they can proceed with shootings. Ashok Dubey said that nothing has been finalised. He said that Mumbai is a red zone and so they cannot think of shooting right now. Dubey also spoke to Sidharth Roy Kapur who said that they will have a conference call with Indian Motion Picture Producers (IMPPA), Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) and Western India Film Producers' Association on how to deal with the situation and go ahead. A few days back, the Producers guild had shared a document that lists precautions to be taken while shooting including proper sanitation, use of masks, etc. Dubey said that the guidelines are correct but how are they to shoot when there are spot boys and workers who travel from their home and back and how they are supposed to test everyone daily when the reports take time to come. He also questioned about reducing the number of people on the sets. He questioned how the people left out will manage their livelihood and how to assure them a salary. Dubey said that there are several factors to be considered before proceeding with the shoot. Ashok Dubey said that the TV producer body is in a hurry to start shooting bit is not possible. He said that it will be like digging its own grave if it does something like this. He further said that social distancing is not possible on the sets and lightmen cannot work 12 hours with a PPR kit. Dubey said that there is a difference in giving suggestions and actually implementing it. Dubey said that the Government has not released any guidelines for the film industry to start shooting. Producers' Guild has just said that these precautions are to be taken while shooting; they haven't said to start shooting and take these precautions. like Unemployment likely to rise, imperative to provide Rs 7,500 to each family, says Sonia Gandhi By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 23 Apr 2020 06:53:15 GMT Asserting that 12 crore people have lost their jobs in the first phase of the lockdown, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said that it is imperative for the government to provide them with immediate financial assistance to each family to tide over this crisis and reiterated that the unemployment is likely to increase further as economic activity remains at a standstill. "Entitlement of food grains under the National Food Security Act has not yet reached the beneficiaries. 11 crore people who are in need of subsidized food grains, remain outside of the Public Distribution System. It should be our commitment to provide 10 kgs of food grains, 1 kg of pulses and half a Kg of sugar to each person of the family every month, in this hour of crisis," Gandhi at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting today. "12 crore jobs have been lost in the first phase of the lockdown. Unemployment is likely to increase further as economic activity remains at a standstill. It is imperative to provide at least Rs.7,500 to each family to tide over this crisis. Migrant labourers are still stranded, jobless and desperate to return home. They have been hit the hardest. They must be provided with food security and a financial safety net in order to survive this period of crisis," she said. The Congress chief said that a special package should be announced urgently for the survival of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). "MSMEs employ close to 11 crore personnel today. They make up for one third of the GDP. If they are to be protected from economic ruin, it is imperative that a special package be announced urgently for their survival," she said. The Congress chief claimed that the Central Government does not appear to have a "clear" idea on how the situation will be managed after May 3, when the ongoing lockdown will end. "A lockdown of the present nature after that date would be even more devastating," she said.Gandhi said that the Congress has repeatedly urged the Prime Minister that there is "no alternative to testing, trace and quarantine programme." "Unfortunately, testing still remains low and testing kits are still in short supply and of poor quality. PPE kits are being provided to our doctors and healthcare workers but the number and quality is poor," she said. The Congress chief said that farmers are facing serious difficulties. "The issues of weak and unclear procurement policies and disrupted supply chains need to be addressed without delay. Necessary facilities must be made available to the farmers for the next round of Kharif crops which will begin in the coming 2 months," she said. In a veiled attack against the Centre, Gandhi said: "The states and local governments are the frontline of the battle against COVID-19. Funds legitimately owed to our states have been held back." She accused the BJP of spreading the "virus of communal prejudice and hatred" amid the COVID-19 outbreak. "Let me also share with you something that should worry each and every one us Indians. When we should be tackling the coronavirus unitedly, the BJP continues to spread the virus of communal prejudice and hatred. Grave damage is being done to our social harmony. Our party, we will have to work hard to repair that damage," she said. The Congress chief applauded doctors, nurses, paramedics, health workers, sanitation workers and all other essential service providers, NGO and the lakhs of citizens providing relief to the most needy all over India. Gandhi said that she had written "several times" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after lockdown came into force. "I offered our constructive cooperation and also made a number of suggestions to alleviate the suffering of both rural and urban families. These suggestions had been formulated on the basis of feedback we have been receiving from different sources, including our Chief Ministers. Unfortunately, they have been acted upon only partially and in a miserly way. The compassion, large-heartedness and alacrity that should be forthcoming from the Central Government is conspicuous by its absence," she said. The Congress leader asserted that the focus must continue to be on successfully engaging with health, food security and livelihood issues. "The lockdown continues and all sections of our society continue to face acute hardship and distress--particularly our kisans and khet mazdoors, migrant labour, construction workers and workers in the unorganized sector. Trade, commerce and industry have come to a virtual halt and crores of livelihoods have been destroyed," she said. Catch up on all the latest Crime, National, International and Hatke news here. like Why Judi Dench didn't like her look in Cats By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 6 May 2020 02:49:09 GMT Dame Judi Dench didn't like her look in Tom Hooper's recent film, "Cats", and says she was "battered and mangy". Featuring Andrew Lloyd Weber's iconic music and team of dancers under the guidance of Tony-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, the film re-imagined the musical for a new generation. The film was criticised widely, and even labelled as the worst film of 2019 at the Razzies. In an interview with British Vogue, Dench, who essayed the role of Old Deuteronomy in the film, opened up about her look, reports dailymail.co.uk. "The cloak I was made to wear! Like five foxes f**king on my back," she said. The film was shot on green screen, and Dench admitted that she wasn't aware of her look while shooting. The Oscar-winning star was unhappy with the appearance in the film. She was hoping she would look elegant but instead felt that she resembled "a battered, mangy old cat. A great big orange bruiser"."Cats" also stars James Corden, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba and Jennifer Hudson. Opening up about her ideal role, Dench revealed that she wants to play someone "who everyone thinks is a kindly, saintly, beautified kind of person, and she's actually killing people". like Chris Hemsworth likes non-stop action By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 7 May 2020 02:46:14 GMT Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth says he likes to shoot non-stop action sequences so that he can keep up with the momentum. Recently, Hemsworth was seen doing some jaw-dropping action sequences in his digital film "Extraction". The film traces the journey of Tyler Rake (Hemsworth), a fearless black market mercenary, who is on a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. The film was shot in various different locations with the film's climactic sequence culminating in an epic gun battle over a bridge. Talking about the action packed climax, Hemsworth said: "The action was non-stop but I like it that way. Sometimes on a film when you have long waiting times, you lose momentum, especially with something so physical. "But using an actual bridge meant we could immerse ourselves in the action and the emotion. I've worked a lot with blue and green screens and your imagination has to do a lot of work to create the world. The bridge did a lot of that work for us," he added. After scouting multiple bridges in India and Thailand for the final action sequence, the makers decided to shoot the climax at the Lat Bua Khao Bridge in Thailand's Ratchaburi. Once the bridge was secured, the art department began creating the blockade which is shown during the final escape sequence. The blockade consisted of a whole of 132 vehicles that were piled up on the bridge -- which included 14 pickups and SUVs, 40 sedans (including police cars), 19 light trucks and vans, 12 full-sized trucks (including an armoured military vehicle), 5 buses, 22 motorbikes, 18 tuk-tuks and 7 bicycle rickshaws. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the film's screenplay is done by Joe Russo. The action thriller, which released on Netflix on April 24, also stars Indian actors Randeep Hooda, Pankaj Tripathi, Priyanshu Painyulli, and Rudraksh Jaiswal. The film is produced by Russo Brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo), Mike Larocca, Hemsworth, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin, and is on its way to becoming Netflix's most watched feature film ever. Meanwhile, "Avengers: Endgame" co-director Joe Russo has confirmed that he will be working on a sequel to "Extraction". Hemsworth and Hargrave are expected to return in the new action adventure. like Mindy Kaling: Growing up, no one looked like me on TV By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 7 May 2020 02:48:33 GMT For long, Mindy Kaling felt like an outsider in Hollywood due to constant reminders that she is different — thanks to the stereotypical attitude towards her ethnicity and gender. The actor, who has Indian roots, is glad that things are changing, and says right representation matters. "We talk about how representation matters in Hollywood, so much that it almost loses its meaning. But it's real," said Kaling while talking about how things have changed for women of colour in the West. "Growing up, I realised that there was no one who looked like me on TV, so I often found myself drawing parallels to people who are like me on shows like the Cosby Family or characters on white sitcoms. You cannot imagine how excited I was when Bend it Like Beckham (2002) came out. The idea that I could actually see people from my community on screen blew my mind," added Kaling, who is basking in the appreciation coming her way for her latest Netflix show Never Have I Ever. Kaling has been a torch-bearer for diversity and right representation. At 24, she was the only woman and person of colour when she joined the writing team of popular show, The Office, in which she also essayed role of Kelly Kapoor. She also became the first woman of colour to write, star in and create the primetime sitcom titled The Mindy Project in 2012, which not only got her wider attention but global fame as well. like USTA tells players: No chest bumps like Bryan brothers By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 24 Apr 2020 02:50:18 GMT The U.S. Tennis Association is warning folks: "No Bryan Brothers chest bumps." That was among the suggestions from the USTA on Wednesday, when it offered return-to-play guidelines to help players and people running tennis facilities know when " and how " the sport should resume at the amateur level as coronavirus lockdown restrictions ease. The USTA thinks it will be safe to again play tennis "in some cities and states sooner than in others." One of the recommendations is to maintain social distancing by staying 6 feet apart from other people " and, therefore, to avoiding playing doubles, because it "could lead to incidental contact and unwanted proximity." The group that runs the U.S. Open went on to add: "If you do play doubles, avoid all incidental contact, no Bryan Brothers chest bumps and no whispering to each other from a close distance to strategize." American twins Bob and Mike Bryan have won 16 Grand Slam titles in men's doubles together and celebrate wins by jumping simultaneously and bumping chests. All professional tennis has been suspended at least until mid-July. The U.S. Open is still scheduled to begin main-draw play in New York on Aug. 31. like Live like a Kardashian in Dubai By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 07 Jan 2018 06:18:49 GMT It's like a scene out of Princess Diaries. I enter my suite at Burj Al Arab and let out an exclamation. The large, plush living room in hues of blue and gold looks out on the pristine Persian Gulf. "This is my room?," I manage to squeak. "Yes," my personal butler says. "If you follow me, the bedroom is above." Above? The winding stairs lead up to more luxury, in the form of a walk-in dressing area, a bathroom that has my own private jacuzzi, and a bedroom that's a shame to be enjoying alone. After the butler leaves, asking me to call him for anything my heart may desire, I decide to soak my weary, it's-December-and-I-need-a-break bones into a hot jacuzzi, as I listen to music and play with the foam. Ok, I know I have moved from Princess Diaries to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but bear with me. And so, I prance into the bedroom, 20 minutes later, suitably loosened up, I plonk myself on the bed in my soft, white bathrobe. And that's when I see it — a ceiling mirror. And that's when I forget about being a princess or a pretty woman — I morph into a Kardashian as I take my first selfie of the trip. Don't blame me, it's a ceiling mirror after all. Pics/ department of tourism and commerce marketing As I post the picture on my Instagram with appropriate Kardashian references, I look around and admit sheepishly — it's easy to get used to luxury. It's rumoured that Dubai got its name from an Arabic proverb "Daba Dubai" which means "They came with a lot of money". Well, you have to come with a lot of money so you can really enjoy all that the city has to offer. Dubai has never shied from flaunting what its sheikh rulers have given it — gravity-defying skyscrapers (Burj Khalifa at 829.8 metres), high-fashion malls, ultra luxurious hotels and a glittering nightlife, among many other attractions. Though you may have looked at it all from far and shook your head in disdain at the unnecessary opulence of it all, once you are here, it seems just natural to enjoy it. Thanks to the fact that I am staying at the Burj Al Arab, the only certified seven-star in the world, my short two-day trip to Dubai has started on a lavish note. After my bathing and preening routine, I am informed that I will be watching a production of La Perle (The Pearl) created by Franco Dragone (the Italian-Belgium director who was once creator at Cirque du Soleil) as the first resident show of Dubai. After a drive that acquaints me with the buildings I have only seen in pictures (the Burj Al Khalifa, the Dubai Frame among others), I find myself seated in front-row seats at the theatre, I really don't know what to expect. But the next 90 minutes are a mind-boggling treat. Performed at a theatre that uses state-of-the-art technology, and houses an aqua-stage and a 12-metre deep pool filled with 2.7 million litres of water, 65 world-class performers, dancers, circus acrobats from 23 countries, perform breath-taking and extraordinary stunts, ranging from acrobatics and contortion to flying and diving. At the end of it, believe it or not, I am tired of gasping. But the show is once again about how Dubai doesn't do anything half-heartedly. If you are going to get a resident show, make it big. The next morning, after having barely slept (the large, quiet room sadly doesn't come with a hot sheikh to keep you company, wink wink), I head down to have breakfast as I look out on the gulf. Arabic delicacies share space with European and American food at the expansive buffet, and it all looks delicious. If I wasn't a fan of mezze (made up of babaghanoush, hummus, muhammara and much more), I am a convert now. My relaxed meal sets me up for a day full of, let's see, yes, more relaxing. As I sink into the massage table, I am once again forced to see myself as another pop culture icon. I transform myself into Carrie Bradshaw in a glittering, starry outfit, and high heels (bought at a mall visit in the morning), for my dinner at the Burj's Scape restaurant that serves Californian cuisine. I don't know if the delicious pizza I ate was Californian, but it was worth it. It's just fitting to end the day with another picture, this time in full Carrie style, with my hand on my hip and my glitter in all it's Instagram-filter glory. As I stand by a gold ceiling prepping my smile, our hotel guide observes, "that ceiling is made up of real gold", and I just smile, "I didn't expect anything lesser." like Style tips: Ace the winter look like these Bollywood celebs By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 03 Jan 2018 02:48:19 GMT Pick a long jacket with a subtle sheen like Kareena Kapoor Khan to add glamour to your evening. Unlike the actor, you might want to wear something more than a bralet. pic courtesy/instagram.com/ eshaamiin1 << The world is moving towards knowing what fabric they choose to wear. Check the labels to see the composition to gauge the fabric. Several high street labels sell apparel made from synthetic and plastic fibres that aren't sustainable, and neither keep you warm nor cool. << Cotton and other natural fabrics are the key to layering in Mumbai. A trench coat, which usually is considered heavy, when made with cotton will offer just the right amount of warmth. Slip on a cotton trench coat on a dress or jeans. Or layer in cotton, for example — wear a singlet, a cotton top over it, and a jacket made of natural fibres as the outermost layer. << Quilted cotton jackets make for a good choice as you move from AC to non-AC areas and you need to wear a fabric that doesn't make you feel cold or hot. Avoid heavy fabrics such as woollens, as you are bound to break into a sweat. A fabric to try is hemp; it adapts well. << Carry a stole that will help cover your neck or head if you don't wish to lug around more garments. << Wear a long printed or silk jacket, on a dress and belt it. like Virat Kohli is like Kapil Dev, says Krishnamachari Srikkanth By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 12 Apr 2020 23:45:28 GMT Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that current skipper Virat Kohli can be compared to Kapil Dev. Srikkanth was part of the squad that Kapil led to victory in the 1983 World Cup and feels that Kohli's self-believe is reminiscent of the former all-rounder. "I played with Kapil Dev and played under him. I can compare Virat Kohli with Kapil Dev. I see a tremendous amount of self-belief in him," Srikkanth said on Star Sports Cricket Connected where he was chatting with former batsman VVS Laxman and former England skipper Nasser Hussain. Laxman said that he was afraid that Kohli's famous intensity might burn out in time but that has shown little signs of happening. "I admire Virat Kohli's intensity. One thing I was worried about was whether he will burn out quickly. But not even for one session or one over does he let his intensity drop and that is really commendable," Laxman said on the TV show. Kohli averages above 50 in all forms of international cricket. In Tests, he has scored 7240 runs at an average of 53.62 and in ODIs, he has scored 11,867 runs at an average of nearly 60. Catch up on all the latest sports news and updates here. like Have been sledged for looking like Ellen DeGeneres, reveals Joe Root By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 29 Apr 2020 09:18:15 GMT England Test captain Joe Root has revealed that he has faced a variety of sledges in his cricketing career, including comparison with American comedian and chat show host Ellen DeGeneres for his looks. "I've been called Ellen DeGeneres on a number of occasions over the course of my career," Root told BBC Radio 1. "I think there's a likeness there," he added. The 29-year-old opted for 'Mardy Bum' by the Arctic Monkeys and 'She Moves In Her Own Way' by the Kooks as his opening two 'Mancave Anthems' while appearing on the pop music station to select some of his favourite records. Earlier in March, Root, in an open letter addressed to the British public, had stressed on the importance of team work as a society in their fight to defeat the coronavirus pandemic which has swept the world off its feet. "As England players we've tasted some desperate days and enjoyed exhilarating highs and tried to stay grounded throughout. "But over the last few weeks I'm sure that many of you, like us, have experienced intense emotions as the pandemic has spread. Perhaps you have lost a loved one, fear for someone who is ill or are sick yourself. "Perhaps you are worried about families and friends and are anxious about what the future holds. Never has teamwork been more important in our society," Root had written in the letter. Professional cricket in England remains suspended till July 1 because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed over 2 lakh lives across the world thus far. like Imran Nazir more talented than Virender Sehwag but didn't have brain like him: Shoaib Akhtar By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 29 Apr 2020 09:31:14 GMT Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has claimed that Imran Nazir was a more talented batsman in comparison to Virender Sehwag but he didn't have the brain which the explosive Indian opener had. "I don't think Imran Nazir had the brain that Sehwag had. I don't think Sehwag had the talent that Imran Nazir had. There is no comparison with regards to talent. We tried to contain him a little," Akhtar was quoted as saying on a TV show by Cricket Pakistan. He, however, believes Pakistan didn't use Nazir well else the team would have had a better player in him than Sehwag. "When he hit a brutal hundred against India in a match, I asked them to play Imran Nazir consistently but they didn't listen," he said. "It is unfortunate that we do not know how to take care of our brands. We could have had a player better than Virender Sehwag in Imran Nazir. He had all the shots while also being a good fielder. We could have utilised him brilliantly but we just couldn't," he added. Nazir played just 8 Tests, 79 ODIs and 25 T20Is for Pakistan, amassing 427, 1895 and 500 runs in the three formats respectively. On the other hand, Sehwag represented India in 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is in which he scored 8586, 8273 and 394 runs respectively. Catch up on all the latest sports news and updates here. like COVID-19 impact: Australia's July UK tour unlikely, says David Warner By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 30 Apr 2020 02:31:11 GMT Veteran batsman David Warner believes Australia's upcoming limited-overs tour of England will be scrapped because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Australians were scheduled to play three one-dayers and three Twenty20 matches against England in July. But last week the England and Wales Cricket Board delayed the start of their season until July 1 at the earliest and players may need some warm-up cricket before returning to the international arena. There has been speculation the tour could be delayed until September, but Warner was doubtful if it would go ahead. "At the moment it's highly unlikely we're going to go over there given what's happened in England," Warner told cricket.com.au. He said the fact British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been hospitalised with COVID-19 showed the gravity of the problem in the host nation. "He's back up on his feet now and that's fantastic news, but there's a lot more to this than just sport being played," Warner added. Australia have already cancelled a two-Test tour of Bangladesh in June, and a limited-overs home series against Zimbabwe is also in doubt. Australia are due to host the Twenty20 World Cup in October-November, for which the International Cricket Council has said it is "exploring all options". Cricket Australia is particularly keen to go ahead with a Test series against India due to be played after the T20 tournament, warning this month it could lose hundreds of millions of dollars if it were scrapped. like Sourav Ganguly on COVID-19 pandemic: Current situation is like Test match on dangerous wicket By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 3 May 2020 06:45:29 GMT BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is deeply saddened and intimidated by the devastation caused because of the COVID-19 pandemic and has equated the unprecedented crisis to playing a Test match on a dangerous wicket. The decorated former player opened up on life under lockdown due to the novel coronavirus pandemic that has claimed over 2.40 lakh lives across the world while infecting more than 34 lakh people. "This situation is a Test match on a very dangerous wicket. The ball is seaming and spinning as well - the batsman has very little margin of error," Ganguly said while speaking on '100 Hours 100 Stars', an initiative started by Fever Network. "So, the batsman has to score runs and keep his wicket safe with this little margin of error, and win this Test match," he added. A winner of innumerable fierce battles during his playing days when there was no dearth of fearsome fast bowlers and quality spinners, Ganguly was tempted to draw a parallel between the tough moments in the sport and the health crisis. "This is very difficult, but we hope that we will win this match together," he added. Ganguly expressed his sadness at the number of lives lost in the pandemic and the irreparable damage that it has caused. "I am really upset seeing the current situation, because so many people are suffering outside. We are still struggling to understand how to stop this pandemic," he said. "This atmosphere all over the world has really bothered me. We don't know how, when and where it came from - we all were unprepared for this," he added. Not just upset, Ganguly conceded he cannot help feeling a big scared of what's unfolding because of the disease. "People are being affected by this so much. There have been so many deaths. This situation upsets me, and I also feel scared," he said. "People come to my house to deliver groceries, food, so I feel a little scared as well. So it's a mixed feeling. I just want this to end as quickly as possible," he added, He said cricket has taught him to face tough situations in life and the importance of staying alert at all times. Asked how he keeps himself positive, the former captain said: "Cricket has taught me a lot. I faced real life, high-pressure situations. You have to make runs and there is just one ball left. "If you make one wrong move, one wrong footwork, you will not get another chance. These kind of situations make you alert and aware about real life situations," he said. The BCCI chief, though, also added that he is getting to spend a lot of time with his family after a long time. "It's been a month into the lockdown. I didn't mind it earlier. Earlier, I wouldn't get time at home like this. My lifestyle involved travelling for work everyday. "For the past 30-32 days, I have been at home with my family, spending time with my wife, daughter, my mother and my brother. "I have got a time like this after long, so I am enjoying myself," he said. Catch up on all the latest sports news and updates here. like Coronavirus: Asteroid flying by earth next week looks like it is wearing a face mask By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 25 Apr 2020 05:37:34 GMT With the Coronavirus lockdown being the only pressing issue one can think of right now, one can have a constant fear of contracting the deadly virus and taking precautions to protect oneself from it. The pandemic can even takeover one’s thoughts to an extend that it feels that even asteroids are wearing face masks. A 1.5 km wide asteroid, which is almost half the size of Mount Everest is set to fly by Earth next week, and its shape has already generated curiosity among netizens. The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico tweeted about the asteroid saying that it looks like it wearing a face mask. The observatory also shared a picture of the asteroid it snapped recently. The team researching about the asteroid in the observatory has been wearing the protective masks while at work as a precaution for the Coronavirus pandemic. They have likening the asteroid’s appearance to themselves in the hilarious tweet. “#TeamRadar and the @NAICobservatory staff are taking the proper safety measures as we continue observations. This week we have been observing near-Earth asteroid 1998 OR2, which looks like it's wearing a mask! It's at least 1.5 km across and is passing 16 lunar distances away!” read the tweet. The team also shared pictures of their members wear masks and posing against the picture of the asteroid. #TeamRadar and the @NAICobservatory staff are taking the proper safety measures as we continue observations.
