rta Use of ch unit considered inappropriate (in certain circumstances) By clagnut.com Published On :: Fri, 14 Jun 2024 09:09:14 PST Update: The title of this post was originally a knowing nod to the considered harmful cliché. I thought it might be amusing and get a bit of attention. However it was brought to my attention by a few people I respect that the title as written might be harmful in itself, so I changed it. However I believe that the subtle point I’m trying to make still stands: When did we start using the ch unit to specify the maximum length for a line of text? Many places you look nowadays you'll see a variation on: .prose { max-inline-size: 60ch; } Is it because of a direct reading of Bringhurst and people (like me) who’ve quoted him: Anything from 45 to 75 characters is widely regarded as a satisfactory length of line for a single-column page set in a serifed text face in a text size. The 66-character line (counting both letters and spaces) is widely regarded as ideal. For multiple column work, a better average is 40 to 50 characters. I get it: there’s all that talk of ’characters’. But that’s not what Bringhurst means literally. I’ll come back to that shortly. Firstly let’s remind ourselves about the CSS ch unit. While ch sounds like it should equate to a number of characters or a character width, that’s not strictly the case. The ch unit specifically refers to the width of the zero ’0’ character within the selected font, or 0.5em if no ’0’ is present. So unless you have a line made up entirely of zeroes, or are using a monospaced font, a width of 66ch will probably not give you a line containing 66 characters. What’s more, the rendered width of that line will vary with the font design, sometimes significantly. Two text blocks are set to 34 ch wide, but the use of a condensed font (top) and an expanded font (bottom) makes the rendered width narrower and wider respectively. The important part of Bringhurst’s guideline is not the ’66-characters’ but the ’satisfactory length’. This is about readability, and readability is affected by the length of a line more so than the number of characters in it. A consistent finding is that long line lengths on screen are least preferred or judged as least easy to read [my emphasis] With that in mind, restricting your line length using rem would be a far more appropriate unit to use: .prose { max-inline-size: 30rem; } This would give you a line length accessibly tied to text size, but independent of font design. But is using ch harmful? Bringhurst’s guideline includes this little caveat: a page set in a serifed text face in a text size. This enables him to equate the number of characters in a line with its length. So if you are using a fairly standard typeface for your text then you’ll probably be fine. However that ’standard typeface’ assumption is implicit anytime you use ch to set the width of a column of text. Using rem removes that assumption and gives you what you are probably really after – a consistent, predictable limit on line length. It didn’t surprise me to find that Eric Meyer had written about this six years ago. I’ll leave you with an important observation from his post: If you’re working with multiple typefaces, say one for headlines and another for body copy, be careful about setting ch measures and thinking they’ll be equivalent between the two fonts. The odds are very, very high they won’t be. So is using ch harmful? At the risk of saying it depends, it might not be harmful, but it could be, and there is a far more reliable and appropriate unit to use by way of the rem when it comes to limiting line length in a column of text. rta De l'importance des rencontres de traducteurs By trematranslations.jimdoweb.com Published On :: Wed, 18 Nov 2015 03:07:00 -0600 Il y a une dizaine de jours s'est déroulée la 56e convention de l'American Translators Association, un évènement qui réunit chaque année dans une grande ville des États-Unis des milliers de traducteurs et d'interprètes venus du monde entier se rencontrer et partager des idées. » me direz-vous. ;-) Pour aller plus loin : Language industry events selected by experts (Commission européenne) Calendrier de la Fédération internationale des traducteurs (FIT) Société française des traducteurs (SFT) Fonds interprofessionnel de formation des professionnels libéraux (FIFPL) Following up after the ATA conference—How to ensure your efforts and expenses don’t go to waste! rta Integrating Personal Web Data through Semantically Enhanced Web Portal By www.jucs.org Published On :: 2011-03-18T16:21:08+01:00 Currently, the World Wide Web is mostly composed of isolated and loosely connected "data islands". Connecting them together and retrieving only the information that is of interest to the user is the common Web usage process. Creating infrastructure that would support automation of that process by aggregating and integrating Web data in accordance to user's personal preferences would greatly improve today's Web usage. A significant part of Web data is available only through the login and password protected applications. As that data is very important for the usefulness of described process, proposed infrastructure needs to support authorized access to user's personal data. In this paper we propose a semantically enhanced Web portal that presents unique personalized user's entry to the domain-specific Web information. We also propose an identity management system that supports authorized access to the protected Web data. To verify the proposed solution, we have built Sweb - a semantically enhanced Web portal that uses proposed identity management system. Full Article

rta A method for selecting multiple logistics sites in cross-border e-commerce based on return uncertainty By www.inderscience.com Published On :: 2024-10-02T23:20:50-05:00 To reduce the location cost of cross-border e-commerce logistics sites, this article proposes a multi-logistics site location method based on return uncertainty. Firstly, a site selection model is established with the objective function of minimising site construction costs, transportation costs, return costs, and operating costs, and the constraint conditions of return recovery costs and delayed pick-up time; Then, using the Monte Carlo method to simulate the number of returned items, and using an improved chicken swarm algorithm based on simulated annealing, the cross-border e-commerce multi-logistics site location model is solved to complete the location selection. Experimental results show that this method can effectively reduce the related costs of cross-border e-commerce multi-logistics site selection. After applying this method, the total cost of multi-logistics site selection is 19.4 million yuan, while the total cost of the five comparative methods exceeds 20 million yuan. Full Article

rta A Fully Online Research Portal for Research Students and Researchers By Published On :: 2018-08-06 Aim/Purpose: This paper describes the context, development, implementation, and the potential transferability of an integrated online research environment that allows its users to conduct all aspects of research online. Background: While the content of most traditional courses can be delivered online and learning outcomes can be achieved by adopting equivalents to face-to-face pedagogic approaches, certain courses, such as those that require a substantial research component, present significant constraints for delivery online. To overcome these limitations, Australia’s largest university developed and implemented a Research Portal. Methodology: The development team conducted a functional requirements analysis, identified the components that would be necessary to meet user needs, and reviewed existing solutions. The Monash University Psychology Research Portal was designed, tested, developed, tested for user experience, implemented, and reviewed. The Research Portal is structured according to the usual research sequence and provides users with access to supporting information and integrated capacities including research supervision, participant acquisition, and data collection, analysis, and storage. Contribution: This integrated online research environment is equivalent to and, in some ways, superior to an on campus/non-online research capacity. Findings: The usage of the Research Portal has grown rapidly and has satisfied the requirements and met the research needs of students of an online course that includes a research project, providing a common, ubiquitously accessible, and integrated online research environment. Recommendations for Practitioners: Further refinement, personalization, and expanded implementation and dissemination of the Research Portal components are required. The formation of networks and working partnerships to operate, maintain, and promote Research Portal initiatives is recommended to reduce operational costs, increase access, and create an impact. Impact on Society: The Research Portal is an efficient resource that provides easy access to a standard interface at any time and from anywhere and can potentially be used by other online research courses, as well as by online and non-online researchers. rta The Effect of Perceived Expected Satisfaction with Electronic Health Records Availability on Expected Satisfaction with Electronic Health Records Portability in a Multi-Stakeholder Environment By Published On :: 2016-04-12 A central premise for the creation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) is ensuring the portability of patient health records across various clinical, insurance, and regulatory entities. From portability standards such as International Classification of Diseases (ICD) to data sharing across institutions, a lack of portability of health data can jeopardize optimal care and reduce meaningful use. This research empirically investigates the relationship between health records availability and portability. Using data collected from 168 medical providers and patients, we confirm the positive relationship between user perceptions of expected satisfaction with EHR availability and the expected satisfaction with portability. Our findings contribute to more informed practice by understanding how ensuring the availability of patient data by virtue of enhanced data sharing standards, device independence, and better EHR data integration can subsequently drive perceptions of portability across a multitude of stakeholders. rta A Novel Telecom Customer Churn Analysis System Based on RFM Model and Feature Importance Ranking By Published On :: 2023-10-03 Aim/Purpose: In this paper, we present an RFM model-based telecom customer churn system for better predicting and analyzing customer churn. Background: In the highly competitive telecom industry, customer churn is an important research topic in customer relationship management (CRM) for telecom companies that want to improve customer retention. Many researchers focus on a telecom customer churn analysis system to find out the customer churn factors for improving prediction accuracy. Methodology: The telecom customer churn analysis system consists of three main parts: customer segmentation, churn prediction, and churn factor identification. To segment the original dataset, we use the RFM model and K-means algorithm with an elbow method. We then use RFM-based feature construction for customer churn prediction, and the XGBoost algorithm with SHAP method to obtain a feature importance ranking. We chose an open-source customer churn dataset that contains 7,043 instances and 21 features. Contribution: We present a novel system for churn analysis in telecom companies, which encompasses customer churn prediction, customer segmentation, and churn factor analysis to enhance business strategies and services. In this system, we leverage customer segmentation techniques for feature construction, which enables the new features to improve the model performance significantly. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed system outperforms current advanced customer churn prediction methods in the same dataset, with a higher prediction accuracy. The results further demonstrate that this churn analysis system can help telecom companies mine customer value from the features in a dataset, identify the primary factors contributing to customer churn, and propose suitable solution strategies. Findings: Simulation results show that the K-means algorithm gets better results when the original dataset is divided into four groups, so the K value is selected as 4. The XGBoost algorithm achieves 79.3% and 81.05% accuracy on the original dataset and new data with RFM, respectively. Additionally, each cluster has a unique feature importance ranking, allowing for specialized strategies to be provided to each cluster. Overall, our system can help telecom companies implement effective CRM and marketing strategies to reduce customer churn. Recommendations for Practitioners: More accurate churn prediction reduces misjudgment of customer churn. The acquisition of customer churn factors makes the company more convenient to analyze the reasons for churn and formulate relevant conservation strategies. rta Local Partnering in Foreign Ventures: Uncertainty, Experiential Learning, and Syndication in Cross-Border Venture Capital Investments By amj.aom.org Published On :: Thu, 14 May 2015 16:16:41 +0000 If partnering with local firms is an intuitive strategy with which to mitigate uncertainty in foreign ventures, then why don't organizations always partner with local firms, especially in uncertain settings? We address this question by unbundling the effects of uncertainty in foreign ventures at the venture and country levels. We contend that, while both levels increase the need for partnering with local firms in foreign ventures, country-level uncertainty increases the difficulty of partnering with local firms and decreases the likelihood of such partnerships. We also posit that experiential learning helps firms manage the two types of uncertainty, and thereby reduces the need for partnering—yet, experience in the host country makes partnering more feasible and increases the likelihood of such partnerships. To test our hypotheses, we conceptualize the decision to partner with a local firm in a foreign venture as a multilayered decision, and model it accordingly. Using a global sample of venture capital investments made between 1984 and 2011, we find support for the distinct effects of venture- and country-level uncertainty as well as for corresponding levels of experiential learning. These findings have implications for the literature on cross-border venture capital investment and international business in general. Full Article
