mining Evidence of asteroid mining in our galaxy may lead to the discovery of extraterrestrial civilizations By insider.si.edu Published On :: Tue, 05 Apr 2011 12:39:32 +0000 If intelligent and more advanced civilizations exist on other planets then its a good bet that some of these civilizations turned to asteroid mining long ago. If so, the hallmarks of their mining activities, such as unusual dirty halos of cast-off dust and debris around large asteroids, might be detectable from earth. mining Cluster-mining: an approach for determining core structures of metallic nanoparticles from atomic pair distribution function data By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-01-01 A novel approach for finding and evaluating structural models of small metallic nanoparticles is presented. Rather than fitting a single model with many degrees of freedom, libraries of clusters from multiple structural motifs are built algorithmically and individually refined against experimental pair distribution functions. Each cluster fit is highly constrained. The approach, called cluster-mining, returns all candidate structure models that are consistent with the data as measured by a goodness of fit. It is highly automated, easy to use, and yields models that are more physically realistic and result in better agreement to the data than models based on cubic close-packed crystallographic cores, often reported in the literature for metallic nanoparticles. mining Structure-mining: screening structure models by automated fitting to the atomic pair distribution function over large numbers of models By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-04-28 A new approach is presented to obtain candidate structures from atomic pair distribution function (PDF) data in a highly automated way. It fetches, from web-based structural databases, all the structures meeting the experimenter's search criteria and performs structure refinements on them without human intervention. It supports both X-ray and neutron PDFs. Tests on various material systems show the effectiveness and robustness of the algorithm in finding the correct atomic crystal structure. It works on crystalline and nanocrystalline materials including complex oxide nanoparticles and nanowires, low-symmetry and locally distorted structures, and complicated doped and magnetic materials. This approach could greatly reduce the traditional structure searching work and enable the possibility of high-throughput real-time auto-analysis PDF experiments in the future. Full Article text
mining Structure-mining: screening structure models by automated fitting to the atomic pair distribution function over large numbers of models By journals.iucr.org Published On :: Structure-mining finds and returns the best-fit structures from structural databases given a measured pair distribution function data set. Using databases and heuristics for automation it has the potential to save experimenters a large amount of time as they explore candidate structures from the literature. Full Article text

mining Ecological effects of deep-sea mining experiment still evident 26 years later By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Fri, 06 Mar 2020 10:51:58 GMT In 1989, researchers dragged a plough harrow across the seafloor of the Peru Basin to recreate some of the effects of deep-sea mining. Twenty-six years later, a new team of researchers returned to the site to assess whether there were any long-term ecological effects. They found that the seabed ecosystem remained disrupted, with significantly fewer suspension feeder species, such as anemones and sea sponges, than in undisturbed areas of seafloor. This suggests that deep-sea mining could cause irreversible changes to marine food webs in highly disturbed areas. Full Article
