hmi Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for finite spin systems and applications By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 27 Apr 2020 04:02 EDT Holger Sambale, Arthur Sinulis. Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 3, 1863--1890.Abstract: We derive sufficient conditions for a probability measure on a finite product space (a spin system ) to satisfy a (modified) logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We establish these conditions for various examples, such as the (vertex-weighted) exponential random graph model, the random coloring and the hard-core model with fugacity. This leads to two separate branches of applications. The first branch is given by mixing time estimates of the Glauber dynamics. The proofs do not rely on coupling arguments, but instead use functional inequalities. As a byproduct, this also yields exponential decay of the relative entropy along the Glauber semigroup. Secondly, we investigate the concentration of measure phenomenon (particularly of higher order) for these spin systems. We show the effect of better concentration properties by centering not around the mean, but around a stochastic term in the exponential random graph model. From there, one can deduce a central limit theorem for the number of triangles from the CLT of the edge count. In the Erdős–Rényi model the first-order approximation leads to a quantification and a proof of a central limit theorem for subgraph counts. Full Article
hmi A Novel Algorithmic Approach to Bayesian Logic Regression (with Discussion) By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Tue, 17 Mar 2020 04:00 EDT Aliaksandr Hubin, Geir Storvik, Florian Frommlet. Source: Bayesian Analysis, Volume 15, Number 1, 263--333.Abstract: Logic regression was developed more than a decade ago as a tool to construct predictors from Boolean combinations of binary covariates. It has been mainly used to model epistatic effects in genetic association studies, which is very appealing due to the intuitive interpretation of logic expressions to describe the interaction between genetic variations. Nevertheless logic regression has (partly due to computational challenges) remained less well known than other approaches to epistatic association mapping. Here we will adapt an advanced evolutionary algorithm called GMJMCMC (Genetically modified Mode Jumping Markov Chain Monte Carlo) to perform Bayesian model selection in the space of logic regression models. After describing the algorithmic details of GMJMCMC we perform a comprehensive simulation study that illustrates its performance given logic regression terms of various complexity. Specifically GMJMCMC is shown to be able to identify three-way and even four-way interactions with relatively large power, a level of complexity which has not been achieved by previous implementations of logic regression. We apply GMJMCMC to reanalyze QTL (quantitative trait locus) mapping data for Recombinant Inbred Lines in Arabidopsis thaliana and from a backcross population in Drosophila where we identify several interesting epistatic effects. The method is implemented in an R package which is available on github. Full Article

hmi Clashes continue to rock occupied Kashmir By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 04:38:37 +0500 SRINAGAR: Anti-India protests and clashes continued for a third day in occupied Kashmir on Friday, following the killing of a top resistance leader by Indian forces. Kashmiri leader Riyaz Naikoo and his aide were killed in a gunfight with Indian troops on Wednesday in the southern Awantipora area, leading to massive clashes at several places. The clashes continued on Friday as anti-India protesters threw stones at government forces, who fired shotgun pellets and tear gas to quell the spiralling protests. At least one man was killed and 50 others were injured in the three days of clashes, residents and medics said. Most of the injured were treated locally. However, at least a dozen people with bullet and pellet injuries were taken to a hospital in Srinagar for treatment, a doctor said on condition of anonymity. She said most of the injured had been hit by pellets in one or both eyes. Residents said Indian troops swooped into the Kashmiri leader’s native village on Thursday, and accused them of vandalising a tent which villagers had set up for mourning his death, triggering large protests and clashes in the area. Authorities did not hand over the bodies of the two slain fighters to their families under a new Indian policy designed to thwart large-scale funerals. Instead, police buried the bodies in a mountainous graveyard about 100 kilometres from the village. Authorities have shut down mobile phone and internet services since Wednesday, a common Indian tactic in the disputed region when such protests erupt. They also imposed a near total information blackout and refused to brief media about the situation. India imposed similar measures in 2019 when it revoked the disputed region’s semi-autonomous status and statehood and imposed direct federal rule. Indian security officials and some members of the ruling party called Naikoo’s killing a victory against the Kashmiri fighters. Naikoo, 35, was the chief of operations of the region’s largest indigenous armed group, Hizbul Mujahideen, which has spearheaded a rebellion against Indian rule. hmi Regenerative responses following DNA damage - {beta}-catenin mediates head regrowth in the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea [RESEARCH ARTICLE] By jcs.biologists.org Published On :: 2020-04-24T07:56:32-07:00 Annelies Wouters, Jan-Pieter Ploem, Sabine A. S. Langie, Tom Artois, Aziz Aboobaker, and Karen Smeets Pluripotent stem cells hold great potential for regenerative medicine. Increased replication and division, such is the case during regeneration, concomitantly increases the risk of adverse outcomes through the acquisition of mutations. Seeking for driving mechanisms of such outcomes, we challenged a pluripotent stem cell system during the tightly controlled regeneration process in the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea. Exposure to the genotoxic compound methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) revealed that despite a similar DNA-damaging effect along the anteroposterior axis of intact animals, responses differed between anterior and posterior fragments after amputation. Stem cell proliferation and differentiation proceeded successfully in the amputated heads, leading to regeneration of missing tissues. Stem cells in the amputated tails showed decreased proliferation and differentiation capacity. As a result, tails could not regenerate. Interference with the body-axis-associated component β-catenin-1 increased regenerative success in tail fragments by stimulating proliferation at an early time point. Our results suggest that differences in the Wnt signalling gradient along the body axis modulate stem cell responses to MMS. Full Article
hmi Loss of cerebellar function selectively affects intrinsic rhythmicity of eupneic breathing [RESEARCH ARTICLE] By bio.biologists.org Published On :: 2020-04-13T03:41:34-07:00 Yu Liu, Shuhua Qi, Fridtjof Thomas, Brittany L. Correia, Angela P. Taylor, Roy V. Sillitoe, and Detlef H. Heck Respiration is controlled by central pattern generating circuits in the brain stem, whose activity can be modulated by inputs from other brain areas to adapt respiration to autonomic and behavioral demands. The cerebellum is known to be part of the neuronal circuitry activated during respiratory challenges, such as hunger for air, but has not been found to be involved in the control of spontaneous, unobstructed breathing (eupnea). Here we applied a measure of intrinsic rhythmicity, the CV2, which evaluates the similarity of subsequent intervals and is thus sensitive to changes in rhythmicity at the temporal resolution of individual respiratory intervals. The variability of intrinsic respiratory rhythmicity was reduced in a mouse model of cerebellar ataxia compared to their healthy littermates. Irrespective of that difference, the average respiratory rate and the average coefficient of variation (CV) were comparable between healthy and ataxic mice. We argue that these findings are consistent with a proposed role of the cerebellum in modulating the duration of individual respiratory intervals, which could serve the purpose of coordinating respiration with other rhythmic orofacial movements, such as fluid licking and swallowing. hmi Lakshmipathy Balaji recalls CSK matches that are close to his heart By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 20 Apr 2020 07:59:16 GMT Former Chennai Super Kings bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji on Sunday recalled team's matches that are close to his heart. CSK's official Twitter handle posted a video in which Balaji recalled the team's memorable moments in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former pacer started with a game against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2010 saying that MS Dhoni's expressions at the end of the game are 'always going to be remembered by all CSK'ians'. "Of course the 2010 game at Dharamshala against Kings XI Punjab. The situation was like we had to win that game to qualify. MS Dhoni's knock and his expressions, hitting the helmet which is always going to be remembered for all the CSK'ians," Balaji said in the video. In that match, batting first, Kings XI Punjab had put up a massive target of 193 runs for CSK at Dharamshala. The match came to a point where Dhoni-led side needed 16 runs off the last over and the skipper chased the target in the first four balls of the over. Dhoni had struck a boundary off the first delivery and took a double on the second ball. On the next two deliveries, he smashed consecutive sixes to take CSK over the line. Besides this, Balaji mentioned IPL 2018 edition when CSK made a return to the league after serving a two-year ban. "Apart from that I would like to pick the 2018 year as CSK was coming back after two years and I joined the team as support staff and I got to witness the first game against Mumbai Indians, arch-rival. The match was completely going out of our hands but Bravo's innings and Kedar's brilliant finish (handed us a victory), that is very close to my heart," he said. hmi Mortal remains of Army Major killed in Jammu and Kashmir reaches Thane By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 09 Aug 2018 08:54:08 GMT Thane: Thousands of people, including grieving family members and friends, in Thane on Thursday received the mortal remains of Major Kaustubh P. Rane who was killed in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir. Rane was among the four Army personnel killed in a gunfight with terrorists near the Line of Control (LoC) in Bandipura district on Tuesday. His body reached his home in Mira Road town early on Thursday, an official said. Late on Wednesday, the coffin, draped in the national Tricolour, arrived in Mumbai where it was solemnly received by Rane's grieving family members, Army and civilian officials. Early on Thursday, decked with flowers the coffin was brought to his hometown in a military truck for the last rites which will be performed with full military honours later in the day. Thousands of emotional onlookers lined the roads on both sides or from building tops and terraces as they showered flowers on the coffin, raising slogans of "Major Kaustubh Rane, Amar Rahe" and "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", waving the Indian flag. Many women could be seen weeping. Since Tuesday, the Mira Road township has been in mourning over the death of their hero, who lived over 25 years in Sheetal Nagar area, barely five km north of Mumbai. Rane, 29, is survived by his aged parents Prakash and Jyoti Rane, sister Kashyapi, wife Kanika and a two-and-half-year-old son Agastya. His father had retired from a Tata Group company, while his mother is a former Assistant Headmistress of Utkarsh Mandir High School in Malad, Mumbai. The only son of his parents, Rane fulfilled his childhood dreams of joining the armed forces by completing his military training from Pune and was later commissioned as an officer from the elite Officers Training Academy, Chennai in 2011. The Major had visited Mira Road town in April for a brief period before returning to the front. It was a proud moment for the family when Rane was decorated with the Sena Gallantry Medal by President Ram Nath Kovind on the 69th Republic Day celebrations this year. hmi No Fathers In Kashmir Movie Review: A rude shock? By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 04 Apr 2019 01:37:04 GMT No Fathers In KashmirU/A: DramaDir: Ashvin KumarCast: Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Soni Razdan, Zara La PetaRatings: So grim and unnatural are the goings-on in Kashmir, that it's almost hard to find yourself not questioning the films that claim to mirror the realities in the Valley. Ashvin Kumar's No Fathers In Kashmir is empathetic in its approach, but critiques the militarisation in the state. Kumar narrates the story through the eyes of Noor, a teenager oblivious to the situation in the Valley. Like those of her kind, she continues to showcase her life on social media, ever so often posing with a terrorist because... Well, why not? Unaware of the repercussions of her actions, Noor eventually stumbles upon some harsh truths pertaining to her family. Her father, Basheer was picked up by the Army, and never returned. The more she delves into the details, the more the skeletons she finds in the closet - literally! Kumar uses Noor's naïvety to explore the plot from the perspective of a third person, elucidating how Kashmir's normal is actually bizarre, claustrophobic and heartbreakingly inhuman. At the crux of the film is an innocent love story involving Noor and Majid, who bond over their unfortunate but common fate as both their fathers were taken away by the Army. Lucidly shot, and wonderfully executed, the film seems to evade the point that it attempts to make at first, but is more aligned post-interval. Shots involving the goings-on in interrogation rooms, graves that see militants dumped in masses, and the common sighting of stray dogs roaming around with severed parts of the human body, successfully invoke the fear that the makers desire. It's a matter that should most certainly be discussed in mainstream media. To drive home this point, Kumar successfully highlights the effects of the situation on children when he showcases one kid elaborating on the difference between a terrorist and a militant, to his friend, and attempts to state how those perceived as enemies of the state, have clarity of intention in their heart. The actors are perfect, especially the children. Kumar's film, however, isn't without loopholes. But you are willing to let them pass because the film makes a brave point - no one deserves to be woken up in the midst of the night by the resounding noise of bullets. Can this be rectified? The film makes an earnest plea, urging us to do our best. Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. hmi Mumbai band Aankh Micholi tells you why Kashmir should be on your travel list By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 15 Apr 2018 02:44:47 GMT Some of the band members saw snow for the first time in Gulmarg It's rare for a young band, new on the scene, to get the traction that the Mumbai-based Aankh Micholi has got in the last year. Formed in 2015 at the True School of Music, the alternative folk fusion has been performing all over the city and country in 2018, gathering praise for their soulful music, which they describe as "a marriage between powerful lyrics and compelling storytelling". Recently, the five members - Osho Jain, 23, Bharat Chandore, 20, Pankaj Pathe, 26, Akshay Dabhadkar, 21, and Hansel Dias, 23 - performed at Winterfell Café in Srinagar, which is known for musical performances. The band also used a sled as a percussion instrument "We had heard about the café and we just took a chance and called them, and said, 'would you like to host us?', and they couldn't have been happier. They also told us that we were the first non-Kashmiri band to have played in the Valley. The band, Parvaz, had performed before us, but all its members are Kashmiri," Jain tells us. We asked the band why they think the Valley should be our next travel destination and this is what they had to say. And sang a few songs, which they shared on Facebook 'The people are amazing'We literally haven't met better people ever before. Firstly, at the café, which takes its inspiration from the Game of Thrones, a crowd of over 50 turned up, which is great for that area. This café has a lot of things happening all the time - open mics, storytelling, all performance-based art. The music that we were playing was very different from the kind of music they are exposed to, which is basically Kashmiri folk music. This was very new to them, but they just loved it, and responded with such gusto. People are just nice everywhere you go, and help is at hand whenever you need it. A select few airlines offer direct flights from Mumbai to Srinagar, or you can fly to Delhi and take a connecting flight As soon as we landed, we just dumped our bags at our hotel, and headed to the Dal Lake. We then sat in the shikaras, and started playing our guitars and singing our original songs. We were entertaining people, and they were loving it. After a while, people joined us in the singing. It was one of our most overwhelming moments. The snow is magicalOn the second day we were there, we headed to Gulmarg. It wasn't supposed to snow that day, and hasn't snowed for the last 20 days. But, as soon as we got there, it started snowing, and even the locals were surprised. Some of us had never seen snow before. We were on the slopes and we were sledding. We also used the sled as a percussion instrument, and sang a few songs as we did a Facebook live from the slopes. Binge on Kashmiri Noon chaiSince most of were vegetarian, food was a bit of an issue. But, we all fell in love with the kahwa. That sweet, sweet tea, really hit the spot in the cold. We also sampled the Kashmiri noon chai, also called sheer chai, gulabi chai, which is a traditional tea made with salt, milk and baking soda. It's very different to taste, and it would be right to say that it's an acquired taste. But we loved it.
