US pilots admired Soviet counterparts for their sense of humour

US pilots told a story about Soviet pilots of MiG aircraft that took off to intercept enemy aircraft at the height of the Cold War. Soviet pilots were making jokes during the operations, Theaviationgeekclub website wrote with reference to a collection of stories dedicated to the Douglas F3D Skyknight air missions. "The first time we were intercepted, they reported that we were taking pictures of them, as we were carrying 35 mm hand-held cameras. Normally, it would be on the pilot's side where the interceptors were, and the ECMO would lean across and snap some pictures of them. And the Russians would report, "They're taking pictures of us. What should we do?” One of the Russian controllers had a sense of humour and said "Smile”. Who would have thought the Russians had any sense of humour at all?" Skyknight pilot Chuck Houseman said. The book also said that US pilots, who were collecting reconnaissance data near the Soviet borders in the Far East, thought of Soviet pilots as friendly individuals compared to pilots from other communist countries. According to the author of the book and aviation expert Joe Copalman, the midair encounters had always been quiet as the United States had not violated state borders and performed its tasks within international space.

Spin reorientation and the interplay of magnetic sublattices in Er2CuMnMn4O12

We show that the interplay of multiple magnetic sublattices in Er2CuMnMn4O12 leads to four magnetic phase transitions characterized by the onset of ferrimagnetic order, spin-reorientation, spin canting, and the polarization of Er ions. While we elucidate numerous features of this complex magnetic system, the exact nature of the low-temperature coupling between erbium and manganese, and the origin of a k = (0, 0, ½) modulation, remain intriguing topics for future studies.

Spin reorientation and the interplay of magnetic sublattices in Er2CuMnMn4O12

Through a combination of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements we have revealed a sequence of four magnetic phase transitions in the columnar quadruple perovskite Er2CuMnMn4O12. A key feature of the quadruple perovskite structural framework is the complex interplay of multiple magnetic sublattices via frustrated exchange topologies and competing magnetic anisotropies. It is shown that in Er2CuMnMn4O12, this phenomenology gives rise to multiple spin-reorientation transitions driven by the competition of easy-axis single ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction; both within the manganese B-site sublattice. At low temperature, one Er sublattice orders due to a finite f-d exchange field aligned parallel to its Ising axis, while the other Er sublattice remains non-magnetic until a final, symmetry-breaking phase transition into the ground state. This non-trivial low-temperature interplay of transition metal and rare-earth sublattices, as well as an observed k = (0, 0, ½) periodicity in both manganese spin canting and Er ordering, raises future challenges to develop a complete understanding of the R2CuMnMn4O12 family.

Exploiting Friedel pairs to interpret scanning 3DXRD data from complex geological materials

A new processing technique for synchrotron scanning 3D X-ray diffraction data is introduced, utilizing symmetric Bragg reflections hkl and hkl, known as Friedel pairs. This technique is designed to tackle the difficulties associated with large, highly deformed, polyphase materials, especially geological samples.

Exploiting Friedel pairs to interpret scanning 3DXRD data from complex geological materials

The present study introduces a processing strategy for synchrotron scanning 3D X-ray diffraction (s3DXRD) data, aimed at addressing the challenges posed by large, highly deformed, polyphase materials such as crystalline rocks. Leveraging symmetric Bragg reflections known as Friedel pairs, our method enables diffraction events to be precisely located within the sample volume. This method allows for fitting the phase, crystal structure and unit-cell parameters at the intra-grain scale on a voxel grid. The processing workflow incorporates several new modules, designed to (i) efficiently match Friedel pairs in large s3DXRD datasets containing up to 108 diffraction peaks; (ii) assign phases to each pixel or voxel, resolving potential ambiguities arising from overlap in scattering angles between different crystallographic phases; and (iii) fit the crystal orientation and unit cell locally on a point-by-point basis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique on fractured granite samples, highlighting the ability of the method to characterize complex geological materials and show their internal structure and mineral composition. Additionally, we include the characterization of a metal gasket made of a commercial aluminium alloy, which surrounded the granite sample during experiments. The results show the effectiveness of the technique in recovering information about the internal texture and residual strain of materials that have undergone high levels of plastic deformation.

Synthesis, characterization and structural analysis of complexes from 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine derivatives with transition metals

The synthesis and structural characterization of three families of coordination complexes synthesized from 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (8, Ph-TPY), 4'-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (9, ClPh-TPY) and 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (10, MeOPh-TPY) ligands with the divalent metals Co2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Ni2+ are reported. The compounds were synthesized from a 1:2 mixture of the metal and ligand, resulting in a series of complexes with the general formula [M(R-TPY)2](ClO4)2 (where M = Co2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Ni2+, and R-TPY = Ph-TPY, ClPh-TPY and MeOPh-TPY). The general formula and structural and supramolecular features were determinated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for bis(4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)nickel(II) bis(perchlorate), [Ni(C21H15N3)2](ClO4)2 or [Ni(Ph-TPY)2](ClO4)2, bis[4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine]manganese(II) bis(perchlorate), [Mn(C22H17N3O)2](ClO4)2 or [Mn(MeOPh-TPY)2](ClO4)2, and bis(4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)manganese(II) bis(perchlorate), [Mn(C21H15N3)2](ClO4)2 or [Mn(Ph-TPY)2](ClO4)2. In all three cases, the complexes present distorted octahedral coordination polyhedra and the crystal packing is determined mainly by weak C—H⋯π interactions. All the compounds (except for the Ni derivatives, for which FT–IR, UV–Vis and thermal analysis are reported) were fully characterized by spectroscopic (FT–IR, UV–Vis and NMR spectroscopy) and thermal (TGA–DSC, thermogravimetric analysis–differential scanning calorimetry) methods.

Conformation–aggregation interplay in the simplest aliphatic ethers probed under high pressure

The structures of the simplest symmetric primary ethers [(CnH2n+1)2O, n = 1–3] determined under high pressure revealed their conformational preferences and intermolecular interactions. In three new polymorphs of diethyl ether (C2H5)2O, high pressure promotes intermolecular CH⋯O contacts and enforces a conversion from the trans–trans conformer present in the α, β and γ phases to the trans–gauche conformer, which is higher in energy by 6.4 kJ mol−1, in the δ phase. Two new polymorphs of dimethyl ether (CH3)2O display analogous transformations of the CH⋯O bonds. The crystal structure of di-n-propyl ether (C3H7)2O, determined for the first time, is remarkably stable over the whole pressure range investigated from 1.70 up to 5.30 GPa.

Crystal structure of Staudtienic acid, a diterpenoid from Staudtia kamerunensis Warb. (Myristicaceae)

This title compound, C20H26O2, was isolated from the benzene fraction of the stem bark of Staudtia kamerunensis Warb. (Myristicaceae) using column chromatography techniques over silica gel. The compound was fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, one and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, IR and MS spectrometry. The compound has two fused cyclohexane rings attached to a benzene ring, with a carboxylic acid on C-4. This cyclohexene ring has a chair conformation while the other adopts a half-chair conformation. The benzene ring is substituted with a propenyl moiety. The structure is characterized by intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, two C—H⋯O intramolecular hydrogen bonds and two C—H⋯π interactions. The molecular structure confirms previous studies carried out by spectroscopic techniques.
