Vatican City, May 5, 2020 / 11:00 am (CNA).- Pope Francis said that he has looked up to St. John Paul II throughout his priesthood in a book foreword he wrote ahead of the 100-year anniversary of the Polish pope’s birth. 

“St. John Paul II was a great witness of faith … Many times, in the course of my life as a priest and bishop I have looked to him, asking in my prayers for the gift of being faithful to the Gospel as he witnessed to us,” Pope Francis wrote in the forward of a recently published Italian book.

The book, “St. John Paul II: 100 Years. Words and images”, is being issued by the Vatican Publishing House to mark the centenary of Karol Wojtyła’s birth on May 18, 1920.

In his five-page foreword, Pope Francis wrote that St. John Paul II was “a great man of prayer who lived completely immersed in his time and constantly in contact with God, a sure guide for the Church in times of great change.”

“He was a great witness of mercy and throughout his pontificate he called us to this characteristic of God,” Francis said.

When Wojtyła became Pope John Paul II in 1978, a 41-year-old Fr. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was serving as the provincial superior of the Jesuits in Argentina. 

Pope John Paul II appointed Bergoglio an auxiliary bishop in 1992, elevating him to become Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and creating him a cardinal in 2001. Pope Francis canonized St. John Paul II in 2014.

“Fifteen years now separate us from his death,” Pope Francis said.

The pope pointed out that there are children and young people today who have not known or only have a vague memory of St. John Paul II.

“For this reason, on the centenary of his birth, it was right to remember this great holy witness of the faith that God has given to his Church and to humanity,” he said.

“I hope that this text will reach the hands of many, above all young people. Let us remember his faith. He is an example for us to live our witness today,” the pope said.

Pope Francis wrote that many may not realize how much St. John Paul II suffered in his life. He experienced the death of his mother, brother, and father by the age of 21, and then lived through World War II.

“The suffering that he experienced relying totally on the Lord forged him, and made even stronger the Christian faith in which he had been educated,” Francis said.

“St. John Paul suffered as pope. He suffered a terrible attack in 1981, offered his life, shed his blood for the Church. He testified that even in the difficult trial of disease, shared daily with God made man and crucified for our salvation, we can remain happy. We can remain ourselves,” he continued. 

Pope Francis also commented on John Paul II’s “great passion for the human person” and his openness to dialogue. 

Earlier this year, Pope Francis co-authored a book of reflections on the life of St. John Paul II entitled “St. John Paul the Great.” In this book, Pope Francis said he learned the importance of joy and mercy from the Polish pope.

“It is enough to look at his life” to see that John Paul II had “the smell of the sheep,” Francis said. “He was a pastor who loved people and the people returned it with an immense love.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics prioritized detection of mental illness in children presenting to emergency departments (ED) by using standardized clinical tools. Only a minority of ED physicians indicate that they use evidence-based screening methods to assess mental health concerns.

This study presents the psychometrics of the HEADS ED (home, education, activities/peers, drugs/alcohol, suicidality, emotions/behavior, discharge resources), a brief, standardized screening tool for pediatric EDs. Head circumference (HC) at birth reflects brain development in utero. However, HC charts used in Canada are either dated, mixed-gender, nonrepresentative of lower gestational ages, or reflective of other populations in the world.

We developed recent and gender-specific reference curves for HC at birth for singletons of 23 to 41 completed weeks’ gestational age, which included a large number of very prematurely born infants, reflecting the current geotemporal Canadian population and advances in obstetric care. Routine head ultrasound scans (HUSs) are frequently performed in the preoperative evaluation of the infants with congenital heart disease, and brain MRI is being increasingly used in the research setting. The utility of HUSs in this population has not yet been established.

This is the first study to prospectively evaluate the utility of routine HUSs compared with MRIs in asymptomatic newborns and young infants undergoing cardiac surgery. Our findings suggest that routine HUS is not indicated in asymptomatic term or near-term neonates undergoing surgery for CHD. (Read the full article)

Several studies have investigated the prevalence of chronic daily headache (CDH) and analyzed the risk factors for its persistence. However, the etiologic factors that lead to new-onset CDH remain unsettled in adolescents.

This study was the first incidence study of CDH conducted in young adolescents. We reported the incidence rates and found that some risk factors for incident chronic migraine and chronic tension-type headache were different. (Read the full article)

Although unnecessary for children with headache and normal history, computed tomography (CT) scans are widely used. Fewer than 1% of pediatric brain abnormalities present with headache as the only symptom. Furthermore, repeated CT scans may increase lifetime risk of cancer.

CT scans continue to be used to diagnose isolated pediatric headaches despite existing practice parameters. Although emergency department visits were correlated with greater likelihood of CT scan use, these scans were widely used across a variety of clinical settings. (Read the full article)

The evaluation of blunt head trauma in children who undergo cranial computed tomography will occasionally reveal incidental findings. These findings may require further evaluation or intervention. The prevalence of incidental findings has previously been described using small cohorts, limiting generalizability.

This study is the largest pediatric multicenter description of the prevalence of incidental findings on cranial computed tomography. Incidental findings are categorized by urgency to describe the spectrum of abnormalities, providing a context for clinicians faced with these unexpected results. (Read the full article)

Effective implementation of Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network head trauma rules depends on their early application. As the registered nurse (RN) is often the first to evaluate children with blunt head trauma, initial RN assessments will be an important component of this strategy.

We demonstrated fair to moderate agreement between RN and physician providers in the application of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network head trauma rules. Effective implementation strategies may require physician verification of RN predictor assessments before computed tomography decision-making. (Read the full article)

Abusive head trauma (AHT) is a type of physical child abuse, with infants at the highest risk. Parental characteristics associated with AHT include stress, young age, and current military service. However, a comprehensive evaluation of AHT among military families is lacking.

Risk factors and rates of AHT among military families are similar to civilian populations when applying a similar definition. Infants born preterm or with birth defects may have a higher abuse risk. (Read the full article)

Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly common among American youth; however, information on use of CAM among youth with recurrent headache (HA) is limited.

Youth across a range of chronic conditions experience HA. These youth are more likely to use CAM. Use and expenditures for conventional medical care, and increased difficulties in activity and functioning are greater for youth with HA who use CAM. (Read the full article)

Preterm infants dependent on parenteral nutrition are vulnerable to deficits in early postnatal nutritional intake. This coincides with a period of suboptimal head growth. Observational studies indicate that poor nutritional intake is associated with suboptimal head growth and neurodevelopmental outcome.

This study provides randomized controlled trial evidence that head growth failure in the first 4 weeks of life can be ameliorated with early nutritional intervention. Early macronutrient intake can be enhanced by optimizing a standardized, concentrated neonatal parenteral nutrition regimen. (Read the full article)

Young children have multiple upper respiratory infections (URI) annually. Limited health literacy regarding URI can place families at risk for emergency department (ED) visits, inappropriate use of over-the-counter medications, and medication measurement errors.

Few educational interventions for URI have targeted groups with limited health literacy. Integrating an educational intervention into Early Head Start is a novel approach to increasing parental health literacy regarding URI and decreasing ED visits, with potential for wide dissemination. Patients with AHT had higher inpatient, outpatient, and drug costs compared with other children for 4 years after their abuse diagnosis, amounting to tens of thousands of dollars in excess and preventable medical care per patient with AHT. (Read the full article)

Children who suffer abusive head trauma (AHT) have lasting health and development problems. AHT can reduce life expectancy dramatically. AHT’s contribution to the burden of disease has been estimated only as part of a broad category of intentional injury.

The DALY burden of a severe AHT case averages 80% of the burden of death, with most survivors dying before age 21 years. Even mild AHT is extremely serious, with lasting sequelae that exceed the DALY burden of a severe burn. (Read the full article)

Head Start, a federally funded preschool program for low-income US children, has been reported to have beneficial effects on developmental outcomes. The association of Head Start participation with changes in children’s BMI has not been examined.

Although headache is a common symptom after minor blunt head trauma in children, controversy exists whether the presence of headache increases the risk of traumatic brain injury.

Many children with blunt head trauma and isolated skull fractures are admitted to the hospital. Several small studies suggest that children with simple isolated skull fractures are at very low risk of clinical deterioration.

In this large cohort of children with isolated linear skull fractures after minor blunt head trauma, none developed significant intracranial hemorrhages resulting in neurosurgical interventions. Microcephaly is known to be associated with neurocognitive disorders and increasing head size with hydrocephalus. Head circumference is widely measured in childhood, but its practical value as a screening test is unclear.

Measured head size is not a stable characteristic and centile shifts occur very commonly, mostly reflecting measurement error or regression to the mean. Even where head size was consistently extreme, it was not a good predictor of later developmental problems. (Read the full article)

Abusive head trauma (AHT) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population, especially in young infants. In the past decade, advancements in research have refined medical understanding of the epidemiological, clinical, biomechanical, and pathologic factors comprising the diagnosis, thereby enhancing clinical detection of a challenging diagnostic entity. Failure to recognize AHT and respond appropriately at any step in the process, from medical diagnosis to child protection and legal decision-making, can place children at risk. The American Academy of Pediatrics revises the 2009 policy statement on AHT to incorporate the growing body of knowledge on the topic. Although this statement incorporates some of that growing body of knowledge, it is not a comprehensive exposition of the science. This statement aims to provide pediatric practitioners with general guidance on a complex subject. The Academy recommends that pediatric practitioners remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of AHT, conduct thorough medical evaluations, consult with pediatric medical subspecialists when necessary, and embrace the challenges and need for strong advocacy on the subject.
