Pets doing homework: This new photography genre in making wins internet

Teachers always try to motivate students to learn! And what is a best way to learn other than involving your pets in your study? A legal scholar, Marie-Amelie George in her trial to make learning fun asked her students to send her the pictures of their pet doing the most unusual of all activities they do –doing homework.

The pictures that make up for an under-rated photography genre, prove that pets can be a cute study companion. George posted a picture of a dog doing what looks like it is reading a book that started a trail of pictures of their pets enlightening themselves with some reading.

The picture posted on April 16, garnered more than 352,400 likes and was retweeted over 52,600 times. Here are some more pictures of pets doing their homework.

What do you think of this new genre in photography?

Have you paid attention to the carpets yet?

Carpets should be vacuumed regularly; blot spills should immediately be cleaned with a dry cotton cloth. The best way to maintain them is by keeping them away from moisture, getting it professionally cleaned regularly if stored; one has to keep it in a dry place.

Folklife News & Events: Botkin Event on African American Dolls and Puppets February 18

African American Dollmaking and Puppetry: Renegotiating Identity, Restoring Community
Various speakers and artists, moderated by Camilla Bryce-Laporte

February 18, 2020, 11:30am-2:00pm
119 First Floor
Thomas Jefferson Building

African American artisans utilize ancient skills and innovative technologies to create dolls and puppets that are both whimsical and starkly serious. Their creations — incorporating clay, textiles, wood, glass, and found objects — embrace the somber reality of African American experiences and optimism for a boundless future. Working alone and in communities these artisans create dolls and puppets that articulate Black beauty, strength, style, spirituality, and truth. Their works, embodying older traditions and innovative vocabularies for storytelling, are designed to amuse, educate, and heal. Dolls of each of 8 makers will be displayed on tables from 11:30-12:00 pm and 1:30 pm-2:00 pm.

Folklorist Camila Bryce-Laporte will present six makers as they discuss their work and the stories behind that work. This will be followed with a question and answer session from 12 noon to 1:30 pm.

This program may deal with sensitive subjects and is aimed at adults rather than children.

Some of the dolls will be for sale through the auspices of the Library of Congress sales shop.

Although I often include quick DOM scripting tips in the intro of this newsletter, for this week, I'm just going to point you to a great little resource that was sent to me by reader Phuoc Nguyen:

It's more or less a repository of basic, intermediate, and advanced native DOM scripting snippets.

HTML DOM: A resource of native DOM snippets

Here are some of the advanced and intermediate examples:
  • Make a draggable element
  • Resize columns of a table
  • Sort a table by clicking its headers
  • Calculate the size of the scrollbar
  • Communicate between an iframe and parent window
There are more than 80 tips currently listed and I'm sure he'll add more later. Even if you don't necessarily use any of the snippets in a real project right away, there are plenty of little coding tidbits you can glean form the example code, which is all just vanilla JavaScript with no library or framework involved.

So check out HTML DOM, I'm sure you'll have lots to investigate!

Now on to this week's tools!

Podcast: 400-year-old sharks, busting a famous scientific hoax, and clinical trials in pets

News stories on using pets in clinical trials to test veterinarian drugs, debunking the Piltdown Man once and for all, and deciding just how smart crows can be, with David Grimm.   From the magazine It’s really difficult to figure out how old a free-living animal is. Maybe you can find growth rings in bone or other calcified body parts, but in sharks like the Greenland shark, no such hardened parts exist. Using two different radiocarbon dating approaches, Julius Neilsen and colleagues discovered that the giant Greenland shark may live as long as 400 years.   Read the research.   [Image: James Howard McGregor/Wikimedia Commons/Music: Jeffrey Cook]

Can your pets get coronavirus, and can you catch it from them?

It was previously reported that lions and tigers in New York’s Bronx Zoo had become infected with SARS-CoV-2, and they were displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Now, it seems that there is evidence that other species, namely cats and dogs, can become infected with the virus, though they respond differently to it than humans do. This week's blog post below discusses the possibility of catching COVID-19 from a dog or a cat.
