The Form Evolution of a New Type of Flying Vehicle

The images below look like an ArtCenter grad's portfolio, but apparently the development of these machines is being pursued.

An Austrian startup called CycloTech is working on a novel propulsion style for electric flying vehicles. Rather than using conventional rotors or propellors, they're using what they call CycloRotors, which are an array of adjustable fins contained within a cylindrical package.

These CycloRotors can provide thrust in 360 degrees around their circumference. With six of them around the vehicle—four in a transverse orientation, two in a longitudinal orientation—a unique benefit is gained: The arrangement "enables high-precision sideways and backward flight, as well as mid-air braking – all without tilting or banking the vehicle."

While the test vehicle looks fairly prosaic…

…the forms they're envisioning for the finished product are socks-knocking:

If you can't get your head around how the 360-degree thrust thing works, see the video below:

CycloTech says their planned production vehicle, to be called CruiseUp, will be safe; the six CycloRotors "provide a high level of redundancy, allowing [one] to fly and land safely, even in the event of a rotor failure."

The company envisions these being used not as an air taxi service, but as privately-owned vehicles that will take the place of cars. The design of the CruiseUp is intended to fit within our existing domestic environment. "While the 20th century taught mankind to fly with fossil fuels," they write, "the 21st century will see emission-free 'Flying Cars/Air Cars' become part of a new normality."

No One Agrees on What a True Flying Car Should Look Like

When it comes to a true flying car—I don't mean just a VTOL vehicle, I mean something that can both drive and fly—we've seen a lot of wild forms over the years.

The AeroMobil 4.0

The Xpeng AeroHT

The Alef Model A

The LuftCar

The GAC Gove

Notably, one that actually flew was the KleinVision Aircar, which had folding wings:

Another vehicle that successfully flew last year was the Samson Sky Switchblade.

However, Samson Sky reckons that in order to make the design production-ready, both the wings and the massive rear stabilizer, which contains the propellers, must be folded into the body for driving mode. So their latest design envisions this arrangement:

I hate to be skeptical, but gosh that looks like a lot of moving parts! I wonder what the maintenance will look like.

The Blue Sun Corporation has helped to run the universe from the shadows for years, but they're ready to step into the light and take over. Greg Pak and artist Dan McDaid launch Mal & the crew of Serenity into their biggest war yet, officially continuing Joss Whedon's acclaimed series." -- Provided by publisher.

How flying got so bad (or did it?)

We often hear that air travel is worse than it's ever been. Gone are the days when airplanes touted piano bars and meat carving stations — or even free meals. Instead we're crammed into tiny seats and fighting for overhead space.

How did we get here? Most of the inconveniences we think about when we fly can be traced back to the period of time just after the federal government deregulated the airlines.

When commercial air travel took off in the 1940s, the government regulated how many national airlines were allowed to exist, where they were allowed to fly, and how much they could charge for tickets. But the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 swept all these restrictions aside – and stopped providing subsidies for the air carriers. Airlines had to compete on ticket prices. That competition led to a more bare-bones flying experience, but it also made air travel a lot more affordable.

In this episode, we trace the evolution of air travel over the past century to discover whether flying really is worse today — or if it's actually better than ever. We'll board a plane from the "golden age" of air travel, hear the history of one of the original budget airlines and meet feuding airline CEOs. Along the way, we'll see how economic forces have shaped the airline industry into what it is today, and what role we, as consumers, have played.

Translate a short flyer to invite Spanish-speakers to join Artisans.coop (NC / USA / anywhere)

I'm posting this as a volunteer activity, but I might be able to pay a ridiculously small amount if necessary. Really, though, it's volunteer, and it's totally fine if nobody volunteers :) That said, if you're fluent, it may take you less than three minutes. The flyer is mainly graphics, URIs, and a scannable code. -- The request is to translate the text on one flyer, accurately but keeping the spirit of the original. I'm not sure if I'll try to make one bilingual flyer or separate Spanish and English flyers. The text is: "We are building a handmade co-op alternative to Etsy!"; "Join our community!"; "ARTISANS.COOP/LINKS or scan QR"; "Follow @COOPARTISANS on [links/icons]"; "Designed by Miss Thera" -- I'm part of the grassroots campaign to built founding membership for Artisans.coop. There are many artisans and many Spanish speakers living near me in the North Carolina Triangle, and I've met spanish-speaking artisans, and I want to help get some diversity into the group ASAP. If someone will help me make a Spanish-language flyer, I can start getting it out into the world, at least here, possibly elsewhere. If you give me your e-mail address I can forward you an original, but the above text is all the text there is. If you are more comfortably staying a MeMail contact, I can send you a link to the folder where the original is, plus the file name. I asked the co-op about it, and no Spanish speaker has volunteered to translate anything so far. The site itself has a machine translation plugin, so a Spanish speaker could navigate it. A co-op is not a nonprofit entity. It is member owned, and anyone can join (even if they do not have cash to make the initial investment, in this co-op). I'd love to get some multicultural voices in immediately so they are heard early and often. Thanks a bunch!

Pizza A Day Diet Archive [January 2015 Edition]: Southside Flying Pizza

Day 8 of ‪#‎PizzaADayDiet‬ is another thin crust, this one from Southside Flying Pizza. They call it “Neapolitan style,” which I guess is a really thin crust. I chose the whole wheat crust and it was pretty good – it stood up to the ingredients but I wouldn't have minded if it had been a tad crisper. The cheese was thoroughly melted and excellent, though, as were the toppings. The sausage had a good flavor and the peppers were nicely al dente. And the side salad was really good, as well.
