A joint mean-correlation modeling approach for longitudinal zero-inflated count data

Weiping Zhang, Jiangli Wang, Fang Qian, Yu Chen.

Source: Brazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 34, Number 1, 35--50.

Abstract:
Longitudinal zero-inflated count data are widely encountered in many fields, while modeling the correlation between measurements for the same subject is more challenge due to the lack of suitable multivariate joint distributions. This paper studies a novel mean-correlation modeling approach for longitudinal zero-inflated regression model, solving both problems of specifying joint distribution and parsimoniously modeling correlations with no constraint. The joint distribution of zero-inflated discrete longitudinal responses is modeled by a copula model whose correlation parameters are innovatively represented in hyper-spherical coordinates. To overcome the computational intractability in maximizing the full likelihood function of the model, we further propose a computationally efficient pairwise likelihood approach. We then propose separated mean and correlation regression models to model these key quantities, such modeling approach can also handle irregularly and possibly subject-specific times points. The resulting estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Data example and simulations support the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Scalar-on-function regression for predicting distal outcomes from intensively gathered longitudinal data: Interpretability for applied scientists

John J. Dziak, Donna L. Coffman, Matthew Reimherr, Justin Petrovich, Runze Li, Saul Shiffman, Mariya P. Shiyko.

Source: Statistics Surveys, Volume 13, 150--180.

Abstract:
Researchers are sometimes interested in predicting a distal or external outcome (such as smoking cessation at follow-up) from the trajectory of an intensively recorded longitudinal variable (such as urge to smoke). This can be done in a semiparametric way via scalar-on-function regression. However, the resulting fitted coefficient regression function requires special care for correct interpretation, as it represents the joint relationship of time points to the outcome, rather than a marginal or cross-sectional relationship. We provide practical guidelines, based on experience with scientific applications, for helping practitioners interpret their results and illustrate these ideas using data from a smoking cessation study.

Semi-Parametric Joint Modeling of Survival and Longitudinal Data: The R Package JSM

This paper is devoted to the R package JSM which performs joint statistical modeling of survival and longitudinal data. In biomedical studies it has been increasingly common to collect both baseline and longitudinal covariates along with a possibly censored survival time. Instead of analyzing the survival and longitudinal outcomes separately, joint modeling approaches have attracted substantive attention in the recent literature and have been shown to correct biases from separate modeling approaches and enhance information. Most existing approaches adopt a linear mixed effects model for the longitudinal component and the Cox proportional hazards model for the survival component. We extend the Cox model to a more general class of transformation models for the survival process, where the baseline hazard function is completely unspecified leading to semiparametric survival models. We also offer a non-parametric multiplicative random effects model for the longitudinal process in JSM in addition to the linear mixed effects model. In this paper, we present the joint modeling framework that is implemented in JSM, as well as the standard error estimation methods, and illustrate the package with two real data examples: a liver cirrhosis data and a Mayo Clinic primary biliary cirrhosis data.

Joint Modeling of Longitudinal Relational Data and Exogenous Variables

Rajarshi Guhaniyogi, Abel Rodriguez.

Source: Bayesian Analysis, Volume 15, Number 2, 477--503.

Abstract:
This article proposes a framework based on shared, time varying stochastic latent factor models for modeling relational data in which network and node-attributes co-evolve over time. Our proposed framework is flexible enough to handle both categorical and continuous attributes, allows us to estimate the dimension of the latent social space, and automatically yields Bayesian hypothesis tests for the association between network structure and nodal attributes. Additionally, the model is easy to compute and readily yields inference and prediction for missing link between nodes. We employ our model framework to study co-evolution of international relations between 22 countries and the country specific indicators over a period of 11 years.

Detecting Structural Changes in Longitudinal Network Data

Jong Hee Park, Yunkyu Sohn.

Source: Bayesian Analysis, Volume 15, Number 1, 133--157.

Abstract:
Dynamic modeling of longitudinal networks has been an increasingly important topic in applied research. While longitudinal network data commonly exhibit dramatic changes in its structures, existing methods have largely focused on modeling smooth topological changes over time. In this paper, we develop a hidden Markov network change-point model (HNC) that combines the multilinear tensor regression model (Hoff, 2011) with a hidden Markov model using Bayesian inference. We model changes in network structure as shifts in discrete states yielding particular sets of network generating parameters. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method correctly detects the number, locations, and types of changes in latent node characteristics. We apply the proposed method to international military alliance networks to find structural changes in the coalition structure among nations.

Agitation in Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder Admitted to Inpatient Pediatric Medical Units

OBJECTIVES:

Our goals for this study were to characterize the frequency of agitation in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) admitted to an inpatient pediatric medical unit and to identify risk factors associated with agitation.

METHODS:

Through a retrospective chart review, we identified every patient between 8 and 19 years of age with a documented ASD diagnosis admitted to a pediatric medical unit over a 5-year period. We performed a detailed review of each admission, with a focus on factors hypothesized to be correlated with risk of agitation.

RESULTS:

One or more episode of agitation occurred during 37 (12.4%) of the 299 admissions and for 31 (18.5%) of the 168 patients who met inclusion criteria. History of agitation (risk ratio 21.9 [95% confidence interval 5.4–88.3] for history of severe agitation; P < .001) and documented sensory sensitivities (risk ratio 2.3 [95% confidence interval 1.3–3.8]; P < .001) were associated with a significantly increased risk of agitation during admission. History of past psychiatric admissions was associated with increased risk before, but not after, controlling for history of agitation and sensory sensitivities. Psychiatric comorbidity, intellectual disability, acute pain on admission, number of preadmission psychotropic medications, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition ASD diagnosis, age, and sex were not significantly associated with increased risk.

CONCLUSIONS:

Hospitalization can be challenging for patients with ASD. A subset of these patients experience episodes of agitation during admission, posing a safety risk to patients and staff. Characterizing risk factors associated with these behaviors may allow for identification of at-risk patients and guide targeted intervention to prevent negative behavioral outcomes.

Pathological Video Game Use Among Youths: A Two-Year Longitudinal Study

Several correlational studies documented that participants who would be classified as "pathological" video gamers demonstrate a pattern of correlations with other variables that are comorbid (eg, depression) or occur with (eg, poorer grades and increased hostility) other addictions.

Following a large sample across 2 years, this study provides needed data on risk factors for becoming a pathological gamer, how long pathological gaming lasts, outcomes, and whether it is a primary problem or is a symptom of comorbid problems. (Read the full article)

Longitudinal Follow-up of Poor Inner-city Youth Between Ages 8 and 18: Intentions Versus Reality

Adolescence is a time of risk taking, with poor inner-city youth at greater risk than the general population for drug use, school failure, adjudication, and teen parenthood. Little is known regarding these youths’ perceptions and intentions in early childhood.

Poor inner-city children were surprisingly idealistic regarding their future. Despite this, by late adolescence most experienced 1 or more trajectory-altering events. Early childhood experiences, exposure to violence and poor home environment, were factors most strongly associated with these outcomes. (Read the full article)

Methicillin-Resistant and Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia and Meningitis in Preterm Infants

There is a perception among clinicians that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia and/or meningitis result in a greater burden of disease than invasive infections attributed to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) among very low birth weight (VLBW) infants.

VLBW infants with MRSA and MSSA bacteremia and/or meningitis have equivalent morbidity and mortality. These findings suggest that allocation of resources for prevention and treatment of both MRSA and MSSA infections among VLBW infants should be comparable. (Read the full article)

Long-term Outcomes of Group B Streptococcal Meningitis

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a common cause of meningitis in young infants. Studies from the 1980s revealed that GBS meningitis resulted in substantial mortality and reported that survivors of the infection had a high likelihood of adverse neurodevelopmental outcome.

Contemporary long-term outcomes for children surviving GBS meningitis reveal that 56% are functioning normally. The remainder sustained mild-to-moderate (25%) or severe (19%) neurodevelopmental impairment, highlighting the need for GBS prevention and for ongoing developmental follow-up for GBS meningitis survivors. Maternal Prepregnancy BMI and Child Cognition: A Longitudinal Cohort Study

Maternal obesity is an increasingly important public health concern and may adversely affect central nervous system development in offspring. However, few studies have explored the relationship between maternal prepregnancy BMI and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children, with conflicting results.

Using data from a large and contemporary UK birth cohort, we found that maternal prepregnancy BMI is negatively associated with children’s cognitive performance. The relationship appears to become stronger as children get older, although the overall effect size is modest. (Read the full article)

School Environment and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: A Multilevel Longitudinal Study

Research indicates that adolescents who perceive their school to have a positive socioeducational environment are at reduced risk of developing depressive symptoms. However, there is limited evidence that school environments can influence adolescent emotional health independently from individual perceptions.

This multilevel longitudinal study shows that better school socioeducational environments, as assessed at the school level, reduce the prospective risk of depressive symptoms in adolescents. This association is shown to be independent from confounders and stronger in girls than boys. (Read the full article)

Parent and Child Cigarette Use: A Longitudinal, Multigenerational Study

Adolescents are likely to smoke if their parent(s) smoke. Little research uses prospective longitudinal data from parents and children to more confidently document these intergenerational associations, alongside potential confounders (parental education) and mediators (school achievement, mental health, older sibling smoking).

Analyses of long-term multigenerational data show how diverse parental smoking trajectories influence child smoking, controlling for measured confounders. The risk of smoking is especially high among children residing with a persistent heavy smoking parent and an older sibling who smokes. (Read the full article)
