189: Snowperson Trauma

Cortex and I decided to make up for lost time after the delayed previous episode by knocking out another one quick-like, and here it is! Catching up on what we can of the last couple of months of MeFi, and also ranting and philosophizing a little bit about recent seismic changes in the social media sphere and also about design skeuomorphism and the semiotics of interfaces? That last bit is probably overselling it a little? Anyway, runs about 90 minutes.

In 'Perry Mason,' Matthew Rhys Lives Out His Boyhood Noir Fantasies

As a child, Welsh actor Matthew Rhys fell in love with old American noir films — so much so that he'd sometimes channel iconic movie stars. "There were moments when I was pulling the last drag on my cigarette and then ... trying to casually throw a one liner," Rhys says. "[Humphrey Bogart] was in my head a lot vocally." Rhys plays the title role in the new HBO series, Perry Mason. His version of the iconic criminal defense attorney is younger and more hardboiled than the one Raymond Burr played in the popular TV show from the '50s and '60s. The new series focuses on Mason as a divorced private investigator in the early 1930s in Los Angeles — before he became a lawyer. "He's a man who kind of lives on whiskey and cigarettes," Rhys says of his version of Mason. "I was getting to fulfill a number of romantic notions in my inner child." Rhys lost weight for the role. He says it wasn't a significant amount — just enough to thin out his face: "It was one of the things I remember seeing a lot

Colin Jost Of 'SNL' Knows You're Laughing At His 'Very Punchable Face'

Saturday Night Live 's Colin Jost knows there's something about his clean-cut image that rubs some people the wrong way. When he joined SNL as a writer in 2005, he worked off-camera — and didn't have to think about his looks. "When you're not on camera or on television, you don't really consider what you look like," he says. But all that changed when he began working on-air in 2014 as the co-anchor of the show's "Weekend Update." "Some people look at me and have sort of a visceral, angry reaction [to me]," he says. "You see it in our audience. When I get hurt or hit on camera — like when [castmate] Cecily [Strong] throws drinks in my face or throws up red wine on me — the audience really loves it." Jost's new memoir, A Very Punchable Face, describes his experiences growing up in a middle-class household on Staten Island . "Part of writing this book was being excited to talk about parts of my life and weird episodes in my life that I thought that would be entertaining for people," he

'Brave New World' Meets 'The Handmaid's Tale' In Sophie Mackintosh's New Novel

Sophie Mackintosh wrote her first novel, The Water Cure , while she was also working a full time office job. It was a success — longlisted for the Man Booker prize in 2018. So she left the day job to write her second novel, Blue Ticket. And as she did in her first book, Mackintosh has created a world in Blue Ticket that explores themes of gender, power and family. "On the day of the first period, teenage girls are assigned a blue ticket or white ticket through a lottery system," Mackintosh says. "The blue ticket means you can't have children and a white ticket means that you can. And this one decision that they make very early on in their lives kind of dictates the rest of their life and follows them around." Interview Highlights On the protagonist, Calla, a blue-ticket woman So I had decided — for a long time I decided I wasn't going to have children, and I was very firm on this. And then when I kind of reached my late 20s, I found myself experiencing something which I imagine a lot

Playing Music Together Online Is Not As Simple As It Seems

Here's a seemingly simple question: Can musicians in quarantine play music together over an Internet connection? We've migrated birthday parties, happy hours and church services to video calls these days, so couldn't we do the same with band practice? Across ubiquitous video conferencing tools like Zoom, FaceTime and Skype, it takes time for audio data to travel from person to person. That small delay, called latency, is mostly tolerable in conversation — save for a few overlapping stutters — but when it comes to playing music online with any kind of rhythmic integrity, latency quickly becomes a total dealbreaker. This video follows pianist and composer Dan Tepfer down the rabbit hole. Tepfer often occupies the intersection of music and innovative technology (just check out his Tiny Desk concert ), and by proxy has served his fellow musicians as a tech support line of sorts. A public inquiry on Twitter led him to jazz trombonist Michael Dessen, also a researcher at the University of

Residents Of Alaskan Town Receive Monthly Stipend Not To Move Away During Pandemic

So one tiny town is using its federal relief money to write monthly $1,000 checks to every resident, paying them not to move away. Claire Stremple reports from member station KHNS. CLAIRE STREMPLE, BYLINE: The boardwalk-lined streets of Skagway, Alaska, are usually filled with tourists by midsummer. But this year, the streets are quiet. REBECCA HYLTON: I became unemployed March 13. STREMPLE: Like many people in town, Rebecca Hylton has depended on the tourism industry for decades. She ran marketing for a local brewpub. But no cruises means no business. She couldn't pay her mortgage until she and her 7-year-old son got their first $2,000 from the local government. Then she spent a little money downtown. This Chef Says He's Faced His #MeToo Offenses. Now He Wants A Second Chance

For decades, chef Charlie Hallowell was a culinary star around Oakland, Calif., as beloved for his restaurants' hip vibe, as he was for his passion for all the right social causes. Even the national critics raved about his creative modern California cuisine and his "cult following." Bon Appetit fawned, "Hallowell should run for mayor already." But in December 2017, as the #MeToo movement was boiling over, the man celebrated for his cool cocktails and organic, locally-sourced farm-to-table ingredients was suddenly splayed across the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle as a serial sexual harasser. Dozens of women accused him of everything from constant lewd comments to uninvited kissing on the mouth, long, handsy hugs – and more. Catalina del Canto, who worked for Hallowell as a cook and hostess, says he would come up behind her when she was stocking shelves in the walk-in cooler and press against her. And the crass sexual banter, she says, was constant. "He asked if I had a

Quick Nonprofit Update

As of November 1, 2024 (it took some time for the notice to arrive), the Metafilter Community Foundation exists as an officially registered Delaware nonprofit non-stock corporation.

What this means:
1. We can now get an EIN, apply for a bank account, and apply to the IRS for not-for-profit designation.
2. The interim board of directors can get to work. We will have to adopt bylaws, approve (with community input) a policy and procedures manual, obtain insurance, and transfer the existing LLC and its assets into the new entity, among many other tasks.

We have a lot of work ahead.

Many people have expressed concern about this process, how long it's taking, and the future of the site. We share these concerns, which is why we've been donating so much of our time to this task. It will soon be time for members of our community to run for the Board of Directors, choose officers, join committees, and generally start doing all of the "community" things people have been calling for over the years. Think you know how to improve Metafilter? Now's the time to prove it. Friends, this is a long way from being over, but I believe that our community's best days are ahead of it. I expect that many people are going to be seeking internet communities in the coming months where civility and thoughtful discussion are still the norm, rather than the exception. If ever there were a time to do more outreach for new members and promote our site and what it can do, what it might yet be, this is it. If there's any silver lining to the current tumult in the world, it's that it gives us even more impetus to band together, talk to each other, and over-analyze those plates of beans. Now, let's get organized!

With China's Economy Battered By Pandemic, Millions Return To The Land For Work

Since the coronavirus pandemic battered China's economy, tens of millions of urban and factory jobs have evaporated. Some workers and business owners have banded together to pressure companies or local governments for subsidies and payouts. But many of the newly unemployed have instead returned to their rural villages. China's vast countryside now serves as an unemployment sponge, soaking up floating migrant workers in temporary agricultural work on small family plots. "Say a factory used to hire 1,000 temporary workers; now, without new orders, these business owners can't afford to hire this many people," Yan Xiyun, a labor intermediary, told NPR. "The factory I usually go to in previous years could easily hire 2,000 people. Now there is scarcely anyone [on the factory floor]." Ten years ago, Yan left her own village near the small city of Zhumadian in Henan province for the first time and joined the migrant workforce. Now, she's a headhunter working on commission, placing thousands

It's Official: U.S. Economy Is In A Recession

It may seem obvious, with double-digit unemployment and plunging economic output. But if there was any remaining doubt that the U.S. is in a recession, it's now been removed by the official scorekeepers at the National Bureau of Economic Research. The bureau's Business Cycle Dating Committee — the fat lady of economic opera — said the expansion peaked in February after a record 128 months, and we've been sliding into a pandemic-driven recession since. In making the announcement , the committee pointed to the "unprecedented magnitude of the decline in employment and production, and its broad reach across the entire economy." At the same time, the committee noted the recession could be short-lived. The U.S. added 2.5 million jobs last month after losing more than 22 million in March and April. Many forecasters said they expect economic output to begin growing again in the third quarter. The standard definition of a recession is "a decline in economic activity that lasts more than a few

Federal Reserve Vows To Help Economy Weather The Pandemic Recession

Updated at 4:12 p.m. ET The Federal Reserve left interest rates near zero Wednesday and once again promised to deliver whatever monetary medicine it can to an economy that's badly ailing from the coronavirus pandemic. "The Federal Reserve is committed to using its full range of tools to support the U.S. economy in this challenging time," the central bank said in a statement . While noting that "financial conditions have improved, in part reflecting policy measures to support the economy," the Fed's rate-setting committee reiterated its intent to leave interest rates at rock-bottom levels, "until it is confident that the economy has weathered recent events and is on track to achieve its maximum employment and price stability goals." Notes released along with the committee's statement suggest no rate increases are expected at least through 2022. "We're not thinking about raising rates," Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said at a news conference. "We're not even thinking about thinking about

Why Reopening Isn't Enough To Save The Economy

Editor's note: This is an excerpt of Planet Money 's newsletter. You can sign up here . Geoff Caddick / AFP via Getty Images Brooklyn Heights sits across the East River from Lower Manhattan. It's filled with multimillion-dollar brownstones and — usually — Range Rovers, Teslas and BMWs. These days it's easy to find parking. The brownstones are mostly dark at night. The place is a ghost town. And the neighborhood's sushi restaurants, Pilates studios, bistros and wine bars are either closed or mostly empty. It's a microcosm for what has been the driver of the pandemic recession: Rich people have stopped going out, destroying millions of jobs. That's one of the key insights of a blockbuster study that was dropped late last week by a gang of economists led by Harvard University's Raj Chetty. If you don't know who Chetty is, he's sort of like the Michael Jordan of policy wonks. He's a star economist. He and his colleagues assemble and crunch massive data sets and deliver insights that

Heaven Is Cheap Enough

Spend time with Christ in His Word. Join us ! We’ll discuss God creating sin, contradictions in the Bible, and many other topics. Apparently Nothing

Nothing is ever nothing – not Satan’s minutest deceptions, not God’s quietest warnings, and the seemingly small things are never really small, for “to a man who lives for God, nothing is secular, everything is sacred,” (C.H.S). Tune in now as we discuss what part we can take in the special mission the Lord has given us to prepare the world for His return. We must show to be His, we must take Christ’s strength, we must tear away from the ignorance. The Lord throws us the obvious sometimes; we must see Him, and see through the enemy.

It's Worth It for Now

If "our chastisements are our promotions," and if that which is gained after many a struggle is a full weighted blessing, and if "our heavenly Father measures and weighs every trial before He permits it to come upon" us... then everything we go through is worth it for now, and for eternity ! (C. Spurgeon, OHC, 323.) Let us then show the world that our God is worth ten thousand worlds to us (C. Spurgeon); that His Word is the maximum; that His Law is our delight; that despite not understanding everything, we keep faith, because everything is worth it, because nothing is above Him - because we will see God's smiling face in Heaven ! Tune in now to learn more with us, about the attacks on God's beautiful Word, about how to keep the Ten Commandments and much more ! 1.- Please explain Revelation 11 verses 11-14. 2.- Did Jesus use the lunar calendar to keep Sabbath ? 3.- Has the latter rain happened yet? 4.- Will you please explain the verse that describes Jesus' Second Coming and how "every eye will see Him"? 5.- Can mentally challenged individuals go be forgiven ? 6.- Is God the Lake of Fire mentioned in the book of Revelation ? 7.- Will we see God when we get to Heaven ? 8.- How do you keep the Ten Commandments ? 9.- Is it Biblically okay to be cremated ? 10.- What does the human brain lack, that we cannot understand God ? 11.- Is it okay for a Christian to take yoga classes ? 12.- Was Satan in the presence of God when he was talking to Job ? 13.- What happened to Enoch after God took him to Heaven ? 14.- Will you please explain Revelation 1 verse 7 ? 15.- Were the Ten Commandments written on blue sapphire stone ? 16.- Will you please explain who the King of the North and the King of the South are and what they represent ? 17.- What is taking place in Psalm 2 verse 7 and Hebrews 5 verse 5 ? 18.- What is the best response when someone asks if we are saved ? 19.- Did God create sin according to Isaiah 45 verse 7 ? 20.- Do we know how many fallen angels there are ? 21.- Is Michael the Archangel Jesus ? Look at Us Now

God has permitted a flood of light to be poured upon the world in discoveries in science. But even the greatest minds, if not guided by the Word of God, become bewildered in their attempts to investigate the relations of science and revelation, (HF, 322). Knowledge has increased exponentially more in the last 100 years than in all of the history of man combined ! Could this be a sign ? Look at where we are and what we are doing... In all regards, may we let our Father and Lord lead the way as this world's time expires. Tune in and study with us about Armageddon and its timeline. We'll also discuss the Second Coming, the first and second deaths described in the Bible, and very importantly, why the Sabbath is still to be observed today. 1.- Are the Armageddons referenced in Revelation chapters 16 and 20 the same event or different ? 2.- How can we know that Sabbath is Saturday ? 3.- Is Enoch really still alive ? 4.- Is using the name "Jesus" wrong since His name in Hebrew was different ? 5.- Why do I go to church on Sunday if Sunday is Resurrection Day ? 6.- How will every eye see Jesus' return if I'm blind ? 7.- Will you please explain why God permitted Jacob to build pillars when Scripture states that it is forbidden ? 8.- Were Adam and Eve created before Sabbath ? and when exactly was their wedding ? 9.- What does Deuteronomy 14 verse 26 mean ? 10.- Are the seven trumpets past, current or future events ? 11.- What would it mean if the River Euphrates dried up before the seven last plagues begin ? 12.- Will you please explain the “sin unto death” mentioned in 1 John 5 verse 16 ? 13.- Would dairy and eggs be considered vegetarian ? 14.- Can we actually rebuke demons through reading Scripture and prayer ? 15.- Why don't Seventh-day Adventists believe in speaking in tongues and dancing ? 16.- In regards to the second death, the Bible says God will send down fire. Is the fire literal, and are angels susceptible to it ? 17.- Is it okay to lend to people your tithe, if you do not have any cash to lend them ? 18.- Is it alright to read the Book of Enoch ? 19.- What does the Bible mean when it says, "and as many as have been appointed to eternal life believed"? Does that mean that God chooses who is saved and who is lost ?
