Daily coal sale to power sector halves

Total supplies to the sector have slumped almost 70% this month as against April 2019. Total sales are down 26%, production has declined 11% and stocks increased 60% to touch 76 million tonnes in April. Power companies refuse to take deliveries since their stockyards are almost full because of weak demand. Other consumers also have huge stocks as many plants are shut.

Centre asks generating companies to reduce coal import, source domestic fuel

The development assumes significance in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday giving directions to target thermal coal import substitution, particularly when a huge coal stock inventory is available in the country this year.

Lockdown pulls down power consumption by 22.75% to 85.05 BU in April

The data showed that India's power consumption was 110.11 BU in the corresponding month last year. The peak power demand met in April stood at 132.77 GW, almost one-fourth less than 176.81 GW in the same month a year earlier. The peak power demand met is the highest energy supply during the day across the country.

CPSEs may have to halve charges for state discoms

“The lowering of charges or return on equity has its implications. We are fiddling around what a regulated regime is and what equity holders expect when they have invested,” said a senior government official, who did not wish to be identified.

'Improving India's public health system is no longer just a liberal-economists’ argument'

'India was seen as a natural alternative. While there’s been a lot of talk about supply chains shifting, in reality nothing much has happened. Much of the FDI in India in the past two years have been investments by Chinese handset producers and online marketing companies.'

Two big trends - local grocer, ecommerce: HUL's Sanjiv Mehta

"There are two big trends emerging. One is the relevance of the humble grocer and people have realised that they are so close to you… proximity, and (that’s) such a big benefit. The second would be on ecommerce. With people becoming more averse to stepping out, they would like to place the order from home and receive it at home. "

Looking at 'repurposing' drugs: Biocon

We are working to repurpose our novel monoclonal antibody Itolizumab (used in psoriasis) to treat complications caused by Covid-19 infection. If we can successfully establish the potential role for our molecule in treating Covid-19 complications, it will enable us to address a critical unmet need, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said.

Corona pandemic presents the greatest opportunity for radical reforms: Arvind Virmani, ex CEA

"As 60% of the economy is already under lockdown, and some of this will take one or more quarters to be restored, any temporary adverse effects of policy change are even less than usual. At the same time the positive effects will start appearing as soon as the pandemic crisis is over," said the ex CEA in an interview with ET.
