Scientific instrument Femtosecond X-ray Experiments (FXE): instrumentation and baseline experimental capabilities

The European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (EuXFEL) delivers extremely intense (>1012 photons pulse−1 and up to 27000 pulses s−1), ultrashort (<100 fs) and transversely coherent X-ray radiation, at a repetition rate of up to 4.5 MHz. Its unique X-ray beam parameters enable novel and groundbreaking experiments in ultrafast photochemistry and material sciences at the Femtosecond X-ray Experiments (FXE) scientific instrument. This paper provides an overview of the currently implemented experimental baseline instrumentation and its performance during the commissioning phase, and a preview of planned improvements. FXE's versatile instrumentation combines the simultaneous application of forward X-ray scattering and X-ray spectroscopy techniques with femtosecond time resolution. These methods will eventually permit exploitation of wide-angle X-ray scattering studies and X-ray emission spectroscopy, along with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, including resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray Raman scattering. A suite of ultrafast optical lasers throughout the UV–visible and near-IR ranges (extending up to mid-IR in the near future) with pulse length down to 15 fs, synchronized to the X-ray source, serve to initiate dynamic changes in the sample. Time-delayed hard X-ray pulses in the 5–20 keV range are used to probe the ensuing dynamic processes using the suite of X-ray probe tools. FXE is equipped with a primary monochromator, a primary and secondary single-shot spectrometer, and a timing tool to correct the residual timing jitter between laser and X-ray pulses.

Capability of X-ray diffraction for the study of microstructure of metastable thin films

The capability of X-ray diffraction for the microstructure investigations of metastable systems is illustrated on the example of thin films of titanium aluminium nitrides with high aluminium content, which are supersaturated and partially decomposed. In addition to the chemical composition, the surface mobility of the deposited species was employed as a factor influencing the microstructure of the thin films. It is shown how the micromechanical properties of the partially decomposed (Ti,Al)N thin films, which were deduced from the synchrotron diffraction experiments, are related to the thin film microstructure and to the decomposition mechanism. The prominent role of the crystallographic anisotropy of the macroscopic and microscopic lattice deformations in the understanding of the micromechanical properties is addressed.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and comparisons of rare-earth oxyapatites Ca2RE8(SiO4)6O2 (RE = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, or Yb) and NaLa9(SiO4)6O2

Six different rare-earth oxyapatites, including Ca2RE8(SiO4)6O2 (RE = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, or Yb) and NaLa9(SiO4)6O2, were synthesized using solution-based processes followed by cold pressing and sinter­ing. The crystal structures of the synthesized oxyapatites were determined from powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD) and their chemistries verified with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). All the oxyapatites were isostructural within the hexa­gonal space group P63/m and showed similar unit-cell parameters. The isolated [SiO4]4− tetra­hedra in each crystal are linked by the cations at the 4f and 6h sites occupied by RE3+ and Ca2+ in Ca2RE8(SiO4)6O2 or La3+ and Na+ in NaLa9(SiO4)6O2. The lattice parameters, cell volumes, and densities of the synthesized oxyapatites fit well to the trendlines calculated from literature values.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of lapachol acetate 80 years after its first synthesis

Lapachol acetate [systematic name: 3-(3-methyl­but-2-en­yl)-1,4-dioxonaph­thalen-2-yl acetate], C17H16O4, was prepared using a modified high-yield procedure and its crystal structure is reported for the first time 80 years after its first synthesis. The full spectroscopic characterization of the mol­ecule is reported. The mol­ecular conformation shows little difference with other lapachol derivatives and lapachol itself. The packing is directed by inter­molecular π–π and C—H⋯O inter­actions, as described by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The former inter­actions make the largest contributions to the total packing energy in a ratio of 2:1 with respect to the latter.

Pristine and hydrated fluoroapatite (0001)

The surface structure of fluoro­apatite (0001) (FAp0001) under quasi-dry and humid conditions has been probed with surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD). Lateral and perpendicular atomic relaxations corresponding to the FAp0001 termination before and after H2O exposure and the location of the adsorbed water molecules have been determined from experimental analysis of the crystal truncation rod (CTR) intensities. The surface under dry conditions exhibits a bulk termination with relaxations in the outermost atomic layers. The hydrated surface is formed by a disordered partially occupied H2O layer containing one water molecule (33% surface coverage) adsorbed at each of the three surface Ca atoms, and is coupled with one OH group randomly bonded to each of the three topmost P atoms with a 33% surface coverage.

LA residents need to make $33 an hour to afford the average apartment

You need to earn at least $33 an hour — $68,640 a year — to be able to afford the average apartment in Los Angeles County, according to Matt Schwartz, president and chief executive of the California Housing Partnership, which advocates for affordable housing. 

That's more than double the level of the highest minimum wage being proposed by Mayor Eric Garcetti, which he argued would make it easier for workers to afford to live here. “If we pass this, this will allow more people to live their American Dream here in L.A.," Garcetti proclaimed when he announced his plan to raise the minimum wage to $13.25 by 2017. 

The $33 an hour figure is based on the average L.A. County apartment rental price of $1,716 a month, from USC's 2014 Casden Multifamily Forecast. An apartment is considered affordable when you spend no more than 30 percent of your paycheck on rent.

To earn $33 an hour or more, you'd need to have a Los Angeles job like one of the following occupations: 

But many occupations typically earn far below that $33 an hour threshold in L.A. County, according to the California Housing Partnership:

  • Secretaries: $36,000 ($17 an hour)
  • EMT Paramedics: $25,00 ($12 an hour)
  • Preschool teachers: $29,000 ($14 an hour)

That's why L.A. residents wind up spending an average of 47 percent of their income on rent, which is the highest percentage in the nation, according to UCLA's Ziman Center for Real Estate.

Naturally, people who earn the current California minimum wage of $9 an hour ($18,720 a year) would fare even worse in trying to afford an average apartment.

Raising the minimum wage to $13.25 would equal a $27,560 salary; raising it to $15.25 an hour totals $31,720 a year.

What about buying a home?

In order to afford to purchase the median-priced home in Los Angeles, you'd need to earn $96,513 a year, according to HSH.com, a mortgage information website. 

The median home price in Los Angeles is $570,500, according to the real estate website, Trulia.com.

But consider that the median income in Los Angeles is about half that: $49,497, according to census numbers from 2009-2013.

So it's no surprise that Los Angeles has been rated as the most unaffordable city to rent in America by Harvard and UCLA

The cost of housing has gone up so much that even raising the minimum wage to $15.25 an hour – as some on the city council have proposed doing by 2019– would not go very far in solving the problem.

“Every little bit helps, but even if you doubled the minimum wage, it wouldn’t help most low-income families find affordable rental housing in Los Angeles,” said Schwartz.
