symptoms 12 symptoms of a back-to-front design process By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Mon, 7 Jan 2019 07:41:11 GMT Everyday consumer products continue to frustrate people. The failure of companies to fully embrace UX is partly to blame, but there is also another reason -- one that is seldom discussed. Consumer product companies pay too much heed to their retail customers and, in so doing, they prevent the development team from getting first-hand knowledge of end users. Full Article
symptoms Joint Prediction and Time Estimation of COVID-19 Developing Severe Symptoms using Chest CT Scan. (arXiv:2005.03405v1 [eess.IV]) By arxiv.org Published On :: With the rapidly worldwide spread of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it is of great importance to conduct early diagnosis of COVID-19 and predict the time that patients might convert to the severe stage, for designing effective treatment plan and reducing the clinicians' workloads. In this study, we propose a joint classification and regression method to determine whether the patient would develop severe symptoms in the later time, and if yes, predict the possible conversion time that the patient would spend to convert to the severe stage. To do this, the proposed method takes into account 1) the weight for each sample to reduce the outliers' influence and explore the problem of imbalance classification, and 2) the weight for each feature via a sparsity regularization term to remove the redundant features of high-dimensional data and learn the shared information across the classification task and the regression task. To our knowledge, this study is the first work to predict the disease progression and the conversion time, which could help clinicians to deal with the potential severe cases in time or even save the patients' lives. Experimental analysis was conducted on a real data set from two hospitals with 422 chest computed tomography (CT) scans, where 52 cases were converted to severe on average 5.64 days and 34 cases were severe at admission. Results show that our method achieves the best classification (e.g., 85.91% of accuracy) and regression (e.g., 0.462 of the correlation coefficient) performance, compared to all comparison methods. Moreover, our proposed method yields 76.97% of accuracy for predicting the severe cases, 0.524 of the correlation coefficient, and 0.55 days difference for the converted time. Full Article
symptoms Evaluating text coherence based on the graph of the consistency of phrases to identify symptoms of schizophrenia. (arXiv:2005.03008v1 [cs.CL]) By arxiv.org Published On :: Different state-of-the-art methods of the detection of schizophrenia symptoms based on the estimation of text coherence have been analyzed. The analysis of a text at the level of phrases has been suggested. The method based on the graph of the consistency of phrases has been proposed to evaluate the semantic coherence and the cohesion of a text. The semantic coherence, cohesion, and other linguistic features (lexical diversity, lexical density) have been taken into account to form feature vectors for the training of a model-classifier. The training of the classifier has been performed on the set of English-language interviews. According to the retrieved results, the impact of each feature on the output of the model has been analyzed. The results obtained can indicate that the proposed method based on the graph of the consistency of phrases may be used in the different tasks of the detection of mental illness. Full Article
symptoms Very, very mild: Covid-19 symptoms and illness classification By www.metafilter.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 16:19:21 GMT What does 'mild' mean in the context of Covid-19? Geographer Felicity Callard details the multifarious meanings of mildness in this pandemic; how the term is used by different actors and what it comes to mean to those experiencing 'mild' cases. The mild, Callard argues, will likely continue to be used for multiple Covid-19 purposes – whether adjudicating clinical symptoms, assessing the virus's impact on the body, determining the need for formal healthcare services, or judging the likely time of return to functional normality, whether inside and outside the labour market. I therefore predict on-going epistemological, ontological and political contestation over the scope and definition of the mild. Full Article coronavirus geography illness phenomenology

symptoms Dietary plant stanol ester supplementation reduces peripheral symptoms in a mouse model of Niemann-Pick type C1 disease. [Research Articles] By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: 2020-04-14T06:30:26-07:00 Niemann–Pick type C1 (NPC1) disease is a rare genetic condition in which the function of the lysosomal cholesterol transporter NPC1 protein is impaired. Consequently, sphingolipids and cholesterol accumulate in lysosomes of all tissues, triggering a cascade of pathological events that culminate in severe systemic and neurological symptoms. Lysosomal cholesterol accumulation is also a key-factor in the development of atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). In these two metabolic diseases, the administration of plant stanol esters has been shown to ameliorate cellular cholesterol accumulation and inflammation. Given the overlap of pathological mechanisms among atherosclerosis, NASH and NPC1 disease, we sought to investigate whether dietary supplementation with plant stanol esters improves the peripheral features of NPC1 disease. To this end, we used an NPC1 murine model featuring an Npc1 null allele (Npc1nih), creating a dysfunctional NPC1 protein. Npc1nih mice were fed a two or six percent plant stanol esters–enriched diet over the course of 5 weeks. During this period, hepatic and blood lipid and inflammatory profiles were assessed. Npc1nih mice fed the plant stanol–enriched diet exhibited lower hepatic cholesterol accumulation, damage and inflammation than regular chow–fed Npc1nih mice. Moreover, plant stanol consumption shifted circulating T-cells and monocytes in particular towards an anti-inflammatory profile. Overall, these effects were stronger following dietary supplementation with 6% stanols, suggesting a dose-dependent effect. The findings of our study highlight the potential use of plant stanols as an affordable complementary means to ameliorate disorders in hepatic and blood lipid metabolism and reduce inflammation in NPC1 disease. Although family-centered prevention programs deter these problems during middle school, no such programs have been developed and evaluated for black high school students. This study demonstrates that participation in a family-centered preventive intervention reduces conduct problems, substance use, and substance use problems among black adolescents by more than 30% compared with adolescents in an attention control condition across nearly 2 years. The results of these studies have been inconclusive.Early maternal depressive symptoms were related to higher odds of deficits in stature but not to deficits in weight among preschool- and school-aged children. Well-child care provides opportunities to identify maternal depressive symptoms to prevent future child growth delays. (Read the full article) Full Article

However, severity of symptoms and otoscopic signs of bilateral and unilateral AOM have previously not been comprehensively studied.Bilateral AOM seems to be clinically only a slightly more severe illness than unilateral AOM. When assessing AOM severity, bilaterality should not be used as a determining criterion; instead, the child’s symptoms together with otoscopic signs should also be acknowledged. symptoms School Environment and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: A Multilevel Longitudinal Study By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2013-02-11T00:06:28-08:00 Research indicates that adolescents who perceive their school to have a positive socioeducational environment are at reduced risk of developing depressive symptoms. However, there is limited evidence that school environments can influence adolescent emotional health independently from individual perceptions. This multilevel longitudinal study shows that better school socioeducational environments, as assessed at the school level, reduce the prospective risk of depressive symptoms in adolescents. This association is shown to be independent from confounders and stronger in girls than boys. (Read the full article) Full Article
symptoms Inconsolable Infant Crying and Maternal Postpartum Depressive Symptoms By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2013-05-06T00:07:29-07:00 Studies reveal that mothers of infants with colic (defined by Wessel’s criteria of >3 hours per day of distress) are more likely to develop depression. No studies have examined whether the consolability of infant crying predicts maternal depression risk.Prolonged inconsolable infant crying has a stronger association with maternal depressive symptoms than overall daily duration of fussing and crying, suggesting that a mother’s report of inability to soothe her infant may be a powerful indicator of her depression risk.
