Movie Review: The Sessions

A movie about a disabled man's experience with a sex surrogate - but so much more than that! The Sessions is about an amazing man who looks for love and meaning in a life that would leave many broken.

Ramirez v. Sessions

(United States Fourth Circuit) - Granting a petition for review, vacating an order of removal, and remanding a Board of Immigration Appeals finding a Salvadoran man ineligible for the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act because convictions for obstruction of justice did not qualify as crimes involving moral turpitude.

sessions

Gonzalez v. Sessions

(United States Fourth Circuit) - Petition granted; reversed and remanded the decision of the Board of Immigration Appeals which had found that payment of court costs qualified as a conviction under the Immigration and Naturalization Act. Plaintiff entered the US illegally and then several years later pled guilty to a misdemeanor marijuana charge where the court withheld adjudication of guilt and assessed $100 in court costs. The Fourth Circuit held that the assessment of court costs was not a punishment and therefore there was not a conviction.

sessions

Shaw v. Sessions

(United States Fourth Circuit) - Affirmed an administrative decision ordering a lawful permanent resident removed from the United States. The British citizen had pleaded guilty under New Jersey's generic conspiracy statute to agreeing with another person to commit a crime. On appeal, he argued that the crime to which he pleaded guilty was not a controlled-substance offense within the meaning of the immigration law provision upon which his removal was based, but the Fourth Circuit rejected his argument and, in a 2-1 decision, denied his petition for review.

sessions

Martinez-Perez v. Sessions

(United States First Circuit) - Affirmed the denial of an asylum claim in a case where an immigrant claimed mistreatment in Honduras because of her Afro-Honduran race and physical disability caused by polio. The Board of Immigration Appeals rejected her asylum application upon finding that the harassment she endured in Honduras did not rise to the level of persecution. Agreeing with the Board's assessment, the First Circuit denied her petition for judicial review.

sessions

Lemus v. Sessions

(United States First Circuit) - Denied a petition for review of an administrative decision ordering a Guatemalan couple removed from the United States. The husband and wife moved to reopen their removal proceedings, claiming there was new relief available to them. Agreeing with the Board of Immigration Appeals that their motion was untimely and number-barred, the First Circuit noted that this was their 17th motion for reopening or reconsideration and was brought nearly 16 years after the initial removal order.

sessions

Sihotang v. Sessions

(United States First Circuit) - Granted an Indonesian national's petition for review of a decision denying his motion to reopen removal proceedings. The evangelical Christian, who alleged he would be persecuted based on his religion if returned to his homeland, argued that the Board of Immigration Appeals should have granted his motion to reopen his decade-old removal proceedings, because he had shown a material change in country conditions and had made a prima-facie showing of eligibility for asylum. Finding some merit in his arguments for reopening, the First Circuit vacated and remanded for further proceedings.

sessions

Aguilar-de Guillen v. Sessions

(United States First Circuit) - Denied an undocumented immigrant's petition for review of a decision ordering her removed from the United States. The El Salvador national sought asylum relief and protection under the Convention Against Torture Act, citing gang death threats she had received in her home country that had prompted her to leave. However, the First Circuit found no basis to overturn the Board of Immigration Appeals' conclusion that she did not have a well-founded fear of future persecution or satisfy other requirements for the relief she sought.

sessions

Rivera v. Sessions

(United States First Circuit) - Dismissed an alien's petition for review of a decision denying his request for cancellation of removal. The Board of Immigration Appeals had found that the citizen of Guatemala was ineligible for cancellation of removal, due in part to criminal charges pending against him of child molestation of his ex-wife's then-twelve-year-old granddaughter. On appeal, the First Circuit dismissed his petition for review.

Social work student and service user role play sessions

This is one of seven stories, showcasing what service user and carer (SUAC) involvement in social work education looks like, what makes it work and what benefits it brings. It has a significant role to play in shaping the next generation of practitioners.

SUAC involvement in social work education has been mandatory for 15 years now, so there is a lot of learning to share with others who can learn from this - transferrable to educators and practitioners working across public services, and relevant to policy-makers committed to mainstreaming person-centred – or person-led – approaches based on real partnership working between those who use and those who deliver services.

Summary
This story is based around role play sessions that are held between social work students at the University of Strathclyde and members of the service user and carer group. The role play is part of an exercise called Fitness to Practise, so students have to take part in a role play before they go out on placement (this is done with second year undergraduate students on the BA course as well as first year students on the Masters course). Previously these sessions were carried out solely between students, but that didn't seem to be working, with it being much harder for students to imagine each other as service users and to use that experience to inform their future work.

Can't hurry love: slow worms embrace marathon sessions of lockdown loving

If you’re gardening more than usual, try not to disturb the legless lizard, which can mate for up to 10 hours at a time in May

Under a small, sun-baked mat, a curled metallic-gold slow worm lies basking in the heat, the dark stripe running down its body revealing its youth. Sensing attention, it begins to wriggle away, revealing a companion, which speeds rapidly into the grasses in the opposite direction.

After a winter of social distancing, slow worms – a type of legless lizard that grows up to half a metre long and is often mistaken for a snake – have been venturing out of hibernation to enjoy warming their cold-blooded bodies in the spring sun.

Let's laugh it off! Ex-Mumbai Club cricketer trying to make a difference through free online sessions

With most people struggling with the Coronavirus pandemic-caused lockdown, staying upbeat is becoming a challenge.

Former Mumbai club cricketer and coach Kishore Harkisandas Kuvavala, 73, who is also a laughter therapist, is trying to make a difference albeit in the virtual space.

For the last 18 days, every evening at 6.30, Babulnath-resident Kuvavala goes live goes live from his Facebook account in an attempt to make people laugh and relieve some stress.

'Stress, a bigger threat'

He claims around 350 to 400 people join him live everyday for his fitness and laughter sessions. "Most people are worried about Coronavirus even if they are confined 24x7 to their homes. They are only watching and hearing about the pandemic during the day through various mediums. Corona will not be the biggest killer, but stress will surely have a huge impact on everybody.

There is nothing else left for people to talk about except Corona, it seems these days. So, I am trying to ease a bit of tension that's surrounding us today. Laughter is the best medicine. I have been championing this cause for over two decades now. I feel it can make a lot of difference to people especially in these times," a fit Kuvavala tells mid-day.

Kuvavala has always believed in leading an active life. He played competitive cricket on Mumbai's local circuit till he was 50. Kuvavala owes a lot to cricket. He got the Bank of Baroda job for his cricketing credentials. "I led the bank team too," he says with pride.

He played the famous Dr HD Kanga Cricket League in the 'A' Division for Young Maharashtra Cricket Club. He was also a Managing Committee member of the Mumbai Cricket Association in 1988-89 before taking up coaching.

Fitness first

Kuvavala decided to work towards spreading awareness on the importance of fitness after giving up the sport. In 1995, he began his journey as a laughter therapist, starting with lessons at Priyadarshini Park. Before the lockdown, Kuvavala and his group of 30 to 35 people would gather each morning at Chowpatty on Marine Drive for their dose of laughter. "Do we ever laugh at ourselves? When we do that, we laugh from the heart. There is an expression and feel involved in it. It is the best form of exercise. It fills you up with positivity," explains Kuvavala, who is often invited by top hospitals for laughter sessions. He also conducts laughter therapy activities for corporates. "I do that for a fee, though," he clarifies. "People nowadays have forgotten to laugh," he remarks.

With anxiety and sadness around due to the pandemic, all that Kuvavala wants to ensure is that people do not stop smiling.
