Episode 89: Joe Armstrong on Erlang

In this Episode we're talking about Erlang with its creator Joe Armstrong. We started by looking at the history of the Erlang language and why it is so relevant today. We then looked at Joe's approach to Concurrency Oriented Programming and its main ingredients: share nothing, lightweight concurrency and pure message passing. We also compared this to the classic shared memory approach to concurrency. We then looked at other interesting aspects of Erlang, such as its functional nature (and why this is important to concurrency) and pattern matching. Next we discussed how to implement distribution and fault tolerance, and we took a look at OTP, the "application server" for Erlang. We concluded the conversation with a littel discussion about how Erlang was designed, it's current community as well as its future.

Armstrong, Samuel Chapman (1839–1893)

Samuel Chapman Armstrong was the founder of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (later Hampton University). Armstrong's father served as the kingdom of Hawaii's minister of education and emphasized student labor as a key part of schooling. The younger Armstrong enlisted in the Union army during the American Civil War (1861–1865) and commanded regiments in the United States Colored Troops. After the war he worked with the Freedmen's Bureau and began planning a school to train black teachers. Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute opened in 1868 and emphasized labor alongside academics. The institution produced African American educators across the South, most notably Booker T. Washington. In 1878 Hampton's mission expanded with the admission of Native American students. The growth intensified Armstrong dependence on benefactors and in turn left it further exposed to the rising racism among American whites. In his later years academics at Hampton were publicly de-emphasized in favor of its trade-school programs. Armstrong died of a stroke in 1893.

#389: Tech Predictions for 2021

Javed Mohammed talks with Serial Entrepreneur Bob Quillin. Predicting the future isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

In the absence of having a magical crystal ball, it requires amongst other things, experience, vision, creativity, good judgement, recognizing patterns beyond the obvious and a track record. When I think of making predictions, or forecasting the future, I am thinking of people who can determine inflection points. This is not an easy task, and there are some people like serial entrepreneurs who do it better than others. It doesn’t mean they get it right all the time or in all aspects of life, but they can do it well in a particular field.

In that regard, Bob Quillin who is a serial entrepreneur graced this Podcast, and gave us a year in review of 2020 and his predictions for 2021. Here are the five plus one bonus inflection points as far tech and the cloud goes for 2021:

  1. 1The Agility Imperative Explodes
  2. Scale & Scalability
  3. Technical Debt - Bill Comes Due Now
  4. Lift and Shift Experiment Fails
  5. Modernization Gets Modern
  6. Bonus inflection point: Family, Life Balance, Health is #1
