Persuading the crowd to back your Innovation

Professor Hannah Chang Crowdfunding is changing how entrepreneurs finance their innovation. As the number of crowdfunding platforms continues to rise, competition for investor attention also intensifies. What can entrepreneurs and communicators do to heighten attention and strengthen persuasion, in order to secure greater success for their crowdfunding campaign? Associate Professor of Marketing Hannah Chang from SMU's Lee Kong Chian School of Business specialises in consumer behaviour. In this podcast, she shares a recent research where she and her collaborators investigated all product-pitch videos on online crowdfunding portal, Kickstarter using a dataset with more than 30,000 project videos and millions of support from the crowd. They observed a phenomenon that has yet been documented in prior literature, that is: having multiple voices in the videos enhances persuasion and leads to increased funding.

Insights into trust across cultures

Trust is an important building block for organisational success, whether it is trust between managers and their subordinates or a brand and its customers. Tan Hwee Hoon is an Associate Professor of Human Resources & Organisational Behaviour at SMU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Business. She has been involved in a multi-year study on trust that spans 30 countries across six continents. In this podcast, she shares her insights into the research which examines how factors of trustworthiness – that is, ability, benevolence and integrity – vary in terms of importance in trust-building across countries; and how one’s general willingness to trust, also termed ‘propensity to trust’, affects relationship-building in different countries.

Race Across America

Last year I went on one of the craziest adventures of my life. I was on a crew for a non-stop bike race across America. And I just agreed to do it again.

From June 16th to June 22nd, I will be on the crew for a bike race across America as a member of Team Donate Life , a non-profit organization that raises money and awareness for organ and tissue donation and transplants. By joining others and contributing to team donate life you can help give hope to thousands by raising money and awareness for organ/tissue donation and transplants, and feel good about it all. Every little bit helps.

The Race Across America begins in Oceanside, CA and will end 6 days and 3,005 miles later in Annapolis, MD.  Our relay team will ride 24 hours a day, racing from the Pacific Ocean, through the Mohave Desert, climbing 3 mountain ranges (including the Colorado Rockies) totaling over 118,000 vertical feet, traversing the Great Plains, with all its wind and rain, riding throughout the day and night on our way to the Atlantic Ocean until finally, worn out yet victorious, we’ll celebrate with actual organ donors and recipients, as we cross the finish line, to support the miracles associated with organ donation~ LIFE!

Your tax deductible donation of any amount can either be made by check to “Team Donate Life” mailed to the address below, or you may go directly to our fundraising page here:http://teamdonatelife.com/riders.asp?ifid=198 to donate online.  Please note on your donation who you are supporting. We are committed to reaching our goal by June 16th.

Event: RAAM
Event Date: 6/16/2012
Fundraising Goal: $1,500.00
Current : $0.00

Donate Now

This is my 2nd year being associated with Team Donate Life and you can call me a believer. There is no more important cause in my book than life and Team Donate Life demonstrates that on many levels. Most importantly organ donation. I remember as a teenager coming up on a car accident where they were flying someone out. Word quickly got out that the person being transported had already died but was an organ donor and they were racing to get his organs to someone in need. That moment I decided that is what I wanted to do and have registered as an organ donor ever since. Join me in helping me reach my goal of $1,500 toward this cause, every little bit helps.

Thank you for your support,

#365: On the Highway to Helidon: Lightweight Java Microservices Framework

Are you familiar with Project Helidon? It’s an open source Java microservices framework introduced by Oracle in September of 2018.  As Helidon project lead Dmitry Kornilov explains in his article Helidon Takes Flight, "It’s possible to build microservices using Java EE, but it’s better to have a framework designed from the ground up for building microservices." In this program we’ll dig into Project Helidon with a panel that consists of two people who are actively engaged in the project, and two community leaders who have used Helidon in development projects, and have also organized Helidon-focused Meet-Ups.

#390: Dmitry Alexandrov on Microservices, Project Helidon, and Building the Community

In this episode Jim Grisanzio talks with Dmitry Alexandrov about his session at Jfokus 2021. Dmitry is a well known speaker at Java conferences globally, and at this month's Jfokus he ran a live coding session on Project Helidon, which is a collection of Java libraries for writing microservices. Dmitry covered the performance improvements and new features in Helidon 2.1. See his session abstract here.

But Helidon is not just a Java engineering project for writing microservices. It's also an Open Source project. So developers can contribute globally via the community on GitHub. This is the real power of the technology -- the people sharing their experience and contributing to the project. And this is where Dmitry really gets emotional when he talks about Helidon. As a software developer, he loves the technology, but there's something special about his tone when he talks about the people he meets in the community.

Dmitry has been a Java Champion for several years now, and he recently jointed Oracle in Bulgaria. Get him on Twitter @bercut2000. Jim Grisanzio is a Sr. Community Manager in Oracle Developer Relations. Get him on Twitter @jimgris. Video from the interview is on YouTube.

The Next "James Bond" Novel Puts the Crosshairs on the Double O Section

No sooner has Anthony Horowitz completed his trilogy of excellent, period-set James Bond novels than the next iteration of Ian Fleming Publications' literary continuations appears on the horizon via HarperCollins: Double or Nothing, by Kim Sherwood. And this one forsakes 007 (for the moment, anyway) to put the crosshairs on 003, 004, and 009... and the whole Double O Section! It should be unsurprising, given the name of this site, that I find that prospect tantalizing. Since I was a kid, I've been very curious to read about the adventures of the other 00 agents!

Usually when we meet them in the movies, they're already dead or just about to die. The only other active agents we've ever really gotten to know well were Suzie Kew and Briony Thorne in Jim Lawrence's Daily Express James Bond comic strip, Nomi in No Time to Die... and I suppose we ought to also count Scarlett Papava in Sebastian Faulks's thoroughly disappointing Devil May Care. (Read my review here.)

Now, I know. You might ask, "What's the point of a James Bond continuation novel without 007?" To which I would point out that this has actually worked very successfully in the past! Some of my very favorite Bond continuation novels ever are Kate Westbrook's (aka Samantha Weinberg's) Moneypenny Diaries trilogy. (Read my review of the second one, Secret Servant, here, and read my in-depth interview with Weinberg about writing the series here.) Weinberg put the spotlight on Moneypenny, and created thrilling and original narratives in the familiar setting of Fleming's Secret Service.

Kim Sherwood has already demonstrated her bona fides in her Twitter feed and on her website, and it sounds like she knows her spy stuff. (Not only is she well versed in Fleming, but she's also a Modesty Blaise fan!) I can't wait to see what she does with Fleming's supporting characters and the new 00 agents she creates in her Double O Section trilogy! The first book, Double or Nothing, is due out September 1 in Britain. A signed edition with stenciled page edges is also available exclusively from Waterstones (pictured below). No U.S. publication date has been announced so far, but Sherwood recently hinted on Twitter that such an announcement might be imminent.
