Abstract:
Strong orthogonal arrays were recently introduced as a class of space-filling designs for computer experiments. The most attractive are those of strength three for their economical run sizes. Although the existence of strong orthogonal arrays of strength three has been completely characterized, the construction of these arrays has not been explored. In this paper, we provide a systematic and comprehensive study on the construction of these arrays, with the aim at better space-filling properties. Besides various characterizing results, three families of strength-three strong orthogonal arrays are presented. One of these families deserves special mention, as the arrays in this family enjoy almost all of the space-filling properties of strength-four strong orthogonal arrays, and do so with much more economical run sizes than the latter. The theory of maximal designs and their doubling constructions plays a crucial role in many of theoretical developments.

Changes in BMI category appear to be common in young children and are associated with cardiometabolic risk in cross-sectional studies. However, there are few longitudinal studies and little information from multiethnic samples of US middle school children.

Findings demonstrate that shifts in BMI category are common in middle-school-aged children and associated with clinically meaningful changes in cardiometabolic risk factors. Programs to promote decreases in BMI, prevent increases, and moderate risk are indicated. (Read the full article)

Estimates of youth participation in strangulation activity, commonly referred to as the "choking game," range from 5% to 11%. Previous studies have documented correlations between youth choking game participation and health risks such as substance use and mental health issues.

Among Oregon eighth-graders surveyed, >6% had ever participated in the choking game. Participation was linked to poor nutrition and gambling among females, exposure to violence among males, and sexual activity and substance use among both genders. (Read the full article)

Physical punishment is associated with aggression, delinquency, and internalizing conditions in childhood, as well as a range of Axis I mental disorders in adulthood. More research is needed on the possible long-term relationship between physical punishment and mental health.

To our knowledge, this is the first nationally representative examination of physical punishment and a range of Axis I and II disorders, gender interactions, and proportion of mental disorders in the general population that may be attributable to physical punishment. (Read the full article)

Skin-to-skin contact with mothers and fathers has been associated with lower pain reactivity and enhanced physiologic recovery after heel lance. The effect of skin-to-skin contact between preterm twins during cobedding on pain response has yet to be studied.

We demonstrate that cobedding significantly diminished time to recovery in preterm twins after heel lance but did not lower pain reactivity. (Read the full article)

Prenatal diagnosis and clinical examination do not identify all infants with critical congenital heart defects before hospital discharge. To improve early critical congenital heart defect detection, New Jersey was the first state to implement legislatively mandated newborn pulse oximetry screening.

This report is the first to evaluate statewide pulse oximetry screening implementation. New Jersey had a high statewide screening rate and identified 3 infants with previously unsuspected critical congenital heart defects that otherwise might have resulted in significant morbidity and mortality. Cigarette smoking during adolescence causes significant health problems. Health care providers play an important role in promoting tobacco use abstinence among adolescents, but recent data on the prevalence of provider screening and advice to adolescents are lacking.

This study uses nationally representative surveillance data to provide current estimates of self-reported receipt of health professional screening and advice about tobacco use among US adolescents. Cessation behaviors and correlates of past-year quit attempts among smokers were also explored. (Read the full article)
