Rhode Island Enacts Comprehensive Pay Equity Law

Rhode Island has joined the growing ranks of states that have enacted a sweeping pay equity statute. The Rhode Island law, which takes effect on January 1, 2023, amends the Rhode Island Equal Pay Law and places significant new burdens on both large and small businesses. The law seeks to “combat wage discrimination” by “strengthening and closing gaps in existing wage discrimination laws,” and does so by imposing new requirements on employers and essentially deems employers “guilty until proven innocent” when it comes to wage disparities.

Required Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree plus ten years of relevant experience, or associate’s degree plus twelve years of relevant experience.   Two year of management experience Experience in developing, monitoring and managing budgets and contracts. Experience in coordinating budget processes, reviewing accounting transactions, developing financial projections and reports. Solid composition, grammar and proof-reading skills, with the ability to compose correspondence and reports; excellent written and oral English communications skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office; word processing & spreadsheet programs required. Ability to handle multiple tasks & prioritize tasks with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated experience and comfort working with multiple program managers simultaneously.  Ability to prioritize and coordinate tasks in such an environment. Demonstrated flexibility to adjust to multiple individual work styles.  Attention to detail and ability to work within a team in a multicultural environment.   Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with IFPRI’s operational systems (finance, accounting, etc.) and the CGIAR system is highly desirable.  Proficiency in a second language of the U.N. system Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office, especially Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint required, and demonstrated proficiency with financial management and administrative software applications such as Costpoint, OnBase, Deltek, and/or other applications. Surprise, you just signed a contract! How hidden contracts took over the internet

When you make an account online or install an app, you are probably entering into a legally enforceable contract. Even if you never signed anything. These days, we enter into these contracts so often, it can feel like no big deal.

But then there are the horror stories like Greg Selden's. He tried to sue AirBnB for racial discrimination while using their site. But he had basically signed away his ability to sue AirBnB when he made an account. That agreement was tucked away in a little red link, something most people might not even bother to click through.

But, it wasn't always like this. On today's show, we go back in time to understand how the law of contracts got rewritten. And why today, you can accept a contract without even noticing it.
