Le refus de l’opposition d’adhérer au processus ne pourrait plus être justifié par un déséquilibre de la solution proposée.

CNA Staff, May 8, 2020 / 07:00 am (CNA).- A new “dial-a-Mass” service enabling Catholics with no internet connection to listen to Sunday Masses is proving a success, an English bishop has said. 

Bishop Terence Drainey of Middlesbrough said that 100 people used the Mass-by-Phone service when it launched May 3.  

Public Masses were suspended in England from March 20 and churches ordered to close days later. The government has not indicated when churches will be allowed to reopen. 

The Diocese of Middlesbrough, in northern England, decided to introduce the phone line -- believed to be the first of its kind in England -- when it became clear that some Catholics were unable to follow livestream Masses because they didn’t have smartphones or Wi-Fi.

Bishop Drainey told CNA: “We’re trying to reach out to as many people as possible. But it became obvious to us that there are some people who aren’t on the internet and they are being completely missed and also wanting to somehow take part in the Mass.”

“As a result of that, talking to our communications people, we came up with this idea of having a ‘dial-a-Mass’ system.”

When Catholics call the service, they hear a brief message welcoming them to St Mary’s Cathedral in Middlesbrough. A recording of the Sunday Mass then begins. 

The Knights of St Columba Council 29 is funding the service, which the diocese believes is the first in England that doesn’t require special access codes.

Bishop Drainey said the line was part of the Church’s creative response to restrictions imposed by the government to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“One of the things that this crisis situation has brought out is people’s imagination: how to initiate new ways of praying, new ways of getting in touch with the larger Church, participating virtually in liturgical celebrations,” he said.

He added that the service was likely to continue after the crisis passed. He recalled that an 86-year-old woman had phoned him just before the lockdown to talk about livestreamed Masses:

“I said we’re about to do it. ‘That’s fine, great,’ she said. ‘But when all this is finished, you need to continue livestreaming. People like me who can no longer get out, we long to be able to somehow be in contact with the Mass. So promise me there you'll really encourage livestreaming after this has all passed.' And I said: 'Yes, absolutely. I agree.'”

In addition to livestreaming Masses and Mass-by-Phone, the diocese is planning to hold a virtual pilgrimage to Lourdes after it was forced to postpone its regular trip to the French shrine at the end of May. The online pilgrimage will include services on Facebook as well as special prayers and reflections.

Use of specific services may help to optimize health for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, little is known about their service use patterns. We aimed to (1) define service use groups and (2) determine associations of sociodemographic, developmental, behavioral, and health characteristics with service use groups among school-aged children with ASD.

Family navigation (FN) is a model to provide information and support to access appropriate services. Few studies have been used to examine FN’s effectiveness for families of children with ASD. This study used mixed methods to (1) characterize FN services received by a sample of families in the Autism Treatment Network; (2) examine change in parent-reported activation, family functioning, and caregiver strain; and (3) explore families’ experiences with FN services.

Limited data exist about the frequency and incidence of serious injuries due to physical abuse of children. Data from Child Protective Services, which are published yearly, do not have information about severity.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases have roots in childhood. Modification of dietary fat intake influences serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations. Reduction of saturated fat intake is recommended to promote cardiovascular health.

Dietary counseling had a beneficial effect on saturated fat intake from ages 7 months to 19 years. The counseling reduced serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations in both genders. It also decreased computationally estimated concentrations of intermediate-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein–triglycerides and apolipoprotein B in boys. Vitamin D levels in the general population have decreased considerably over the past decade. The implications of maternal vitamin D insufficiency during pregnancy for offspring neurocognitive development remain unclear.

Studying a large sample and using a prospective longitudinal design, this study demonstrates a link between maternal vitamin D insufficiency during pregnancy and offspring language impairment. There was no association with childhood behavioral or emotional problems. (Read the full article)

Neglect cases in Child Protective Services often receive home-based interventions, but their success in preventing maltreatment recidivism has been elusive. Structured, behavioral skills models, such as SafeCare, are promising but have not been tested in full-scale implementation trials.

This cluster trial experiment demonstrates significant maltreatment recidivism reduction due to implementing the SafeCare model in a fully scaled-up statewide system. The findings support adopting the SafeCare model for these types of services. (Read the full article)

General measures discourage all self-referrals to the emergency department. For adults, self-referral to the emergency department has been associated with nonsevere disease, whereas severity of illness of self-referred children is still unknown.

One in four parents properly judged and acted on their febrile child’s illness by presentation to the emergency department on their own initiative. Measures to discourage parents from self-referral may potentially result in delayed or missed diagnoses. (Read the full article)

More than one-tenth pediatric patients use complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) for their medial conditions in the United States. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the most commonly used CAM in East Asia but large-scale epidemiologic studies are lacking.

In comparing TCM and non-TCM users among children in Taiwan, children’s age and parental TCM use were strongly associated with TCM use. Additionally, dyspepsia and allergic rhinitis were positively related to increasing TCM use. (Read the full article)

Literature about polymorphic expression of an apparent life-threatening event (ALTE), particularly that concerning discrimination between ALTE with evident cause and idiopathic ALTE, is scarce. Relationships between SIDS and ALTEs have been supposed but data are still controversial and no genetic data are available.

Genetic analysis (5HTT and MAOA) on ALTEs and idiopathic ALTEs discriminated the 2 syndromes and found a link between the idiopathic form and SIDS. Consequently, we hypothesized that the 2 latter syndromes could be different phenotype expressions of a common genetic base. (Read the full article)

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia may progress to bilirubin encephalopathy. Findings from previous studies on long-term development of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia are conflicting.

Using Ages and Stages Questionnaire, we observed no association between bilirubin exposure and overall development in 1- to 5-year-old children who in the neonatal period had total serum bilirubin level ≥25 mg/dL and no or only minor neurologic symptoms. (Read the full article)

Family-centered rounds (FCR) show promise for higher patient care satisfaction. Many previous studies are limited by small sample size and observational or pre-post designs, and health care service outcomes have not been previously examined.
