Crystal structure and magnetic properties of bis­[butyl­tris­(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)borato]iron(II)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Fe(C13H18BN6)2], contains two half independent complex mol­ecules. In each complex, the FeII atom is located on an inversion center and is surrounded by two scorpionate ligand butyl­tris­(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)borate mol­ecules that coordinate to the iron(II) ion through the N atoms of the pyrazole groups. The two independent complex mol­ecules differ essentially in the conformation of the butyl substituents. In the crystal, the complex mol­ecules are linked by a series of C—H⋯π inter­actions, which generate a supra­molecular three-dimensional structure. At 120 K, the average Fe—N bond distance is 1.969 Å, indicating the low-spin state of the iron(II) atom, which does not change upon heating, as demonstrated by high-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Crystal structure of poly[[di­aqua­tetra-μ2-cyanido-iron(II)platinum(II)] acetone disolvate]

In the title polymeric complex, {[FePt(CN)4(H2O)2]·2C3H6O}n, the FeII cation has an octa­hedral [FeN4O2] geometry being coordinated by two water mol­ecules and four cyanide anions. The Pt cation is located on an inversion centre and has a square-planar coordination environment formed by four cyanide groups. The tetra­cyano­platinate anions bridge the FeII cations to form infinite two-dimensional layers that propagate in the bc plane. Two guest mol­ecules of acetone per FeII are located between the layers. These guest acetone mol­ecules inter­act with the coordinated water mol­ecules by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Crystal structure of tetra­kis­(tetra­hydro­furan-κO)bis­(tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonato-κO)iron(II)

The title compound, [Fe(CF3SO3)2(C4H8O)4], is octa­hedral with two tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonate ligands in trans positions and four tetra­hydro­furane mol­ecules in the equatorial plane. By the conformation of the ligands the complex is chiral in the crystal packing. The compound crystallizes in the Sohncke space group P212121 and is enanti­omerically pure. The packing of the mol­ecules is determined by weak C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The crystal studied was refined as a two-component inversion twin.

Crystal structure of dicarbon­yl[μ2-methyl­enebis(di­phenyl­phosphane)-κ2P:P'][μ2-2-(2,4,5-tri­methyl­phen­yl)-3-oxoprop-1-ene-1,3-di­yl](tri­phenyl­phosphane-κP)ironplatinum(Fe—Pt)–di­chloro­met

The title compound, [FePt(C12H12O)(C18H15P)(C25H22P2)(CO)2]·2C7H8·CH2Cl2 or [(OC)2Fe(μ-dppm)(μ-C(=O)C(2,4,5-C6H2Me3)=CH)Pt(PPh3)], represents an example of a diphosphane-bridged heterobimetallic dimetalla­cyclo­pentenone complex resulting from a bimetallic activation of 1-ethynyl-2,4,5-tri­methyl­benzene and a metal-coordinated carbonyl ligand. The bridging μ2-C(=O)C(2,4,5-C6H2Me3)=CH unit (stemming from a carbon–carbon coupling reaction between CO and the terminal alkyne) forms a five-membered dimetalla­cyclo­pentenone ring, in which the C=C bond is π-coordinated to the Fe centre. The latter is connected to the Pt centre through a short metal–metal bond of 2.5770 (5) Å. In the crystal, the complex is solvated by one di­chloro­methane and two toluene mol­ecules.

Crystal structure, synthesis and thermal properties of bis­(4-benzoyl­pyridine-κN)bis­(iso­thio­cyanato-κN)bis­(methanol-κN)iron(II)

In the crystal structure of the title compound, [Fe(NCS)2(C12H9NO)2(CH4O)2], the FeII cations are octa­hedrally coordinated by two N atoms of 4-benzoyl­pyridine ligands, two N atoms of two terminal iso­thio­cyanate anions and two methanol mol­ecules into discrete complexes that are located on centres of inversion. These complexes are linked via inter­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the methanol O—H H atoms and the carbonyl O atoms of the 4-benzoyl­pyridine ligands, forming layers parallel to (101). Powder X-ray diffraction proved that a pure sample was obtained but that this compound is unstable and transforms into an unknown crystalline phase within several weeks. However, the solvent mol­ecules can be removed by heating in a thermobalance, which for the aged sample as well as the title compound leads to the formation of a compound with the composition Fe(NCS)2(4-benzoyl­pyridine)2, which exhibits a powder pattern that is similar to that of Mn(NCS)2(4-benzoyl­pyridine)2.

Crystal structure of a nickel compound comprising two nickel(II) complexes with different ligand environments: [Ni(tren)(H2O)2][Ni(H2O)6](SO4)2

The title compound, di­aqua­[tris­(2-amino­eth­yl)amine]­nickel(II) hexa­aqua­nickel(II) bis­(sulfate), [Ni(C6H18N4)(H2O)2][Ni(H2O)6](SO4)2 or [Ni(tren)(H2O)2][Ni(H2O)6](SO4)2, consists of two octa­hedral nickel complexes within the same unit cell. These metal complexes are formed from the reaction of [Ni(H2O)6](SO4) and the ligand tris­(2-amino­eth­yl)amine (tren). The crystals of the title compound are purple, different from those of the starting complex [Ni(H2O)6](SO4), which are turquoise. The reaction was performed both in a 1:1 and 1:2 metal–ligand molar ratio, always yielding the co-precipitation of the two types of crystals. The asymmetric unit of the title compound, which crystallizes in the space group Pnma, consists of two half NiII complexes and a sulfate counter-anion. The mononuclear cationic complex [Ni(tren)(H2O)2]2+ comprises an Ni ion, the tren ligand and two water mol­ecules, while the mononuclear complex [Ni(H2O)6]2+ consists of another Ni ion surrounded by six coordinated water mol­ecules. The [Ni(tren)(H2O)2] and [Ni(H2O)6] subunits are connected to the SO42− counter-anions through hydrogen bonding, thus consolidating the crystal structure.

A fixed-target platform for serial femtosecond crystallography in a hydrated environment

For serial femtosecond crystallography at X-ray free-electron lasers, which entails collection of single-pulse diffraction patterns from a constantly refreshed supply of microcrystalline sample, delivery of the sample into the X-ray beam path while maintaining low background remains a technical challenge for some experiments, especially where this methodology is applied to relatively low-ordered samples or those difficult to purify and crystallize in large quantities. This work demonstrates a scheme to encapsulate biological samples using polymer thin films and graphene to maintain sample hydration in vacuum conditions. The encapsulated sample is delivered into the X-ray beam on fixed targets for rapid scanning using the Roadrunner fixed-target system towards a long-term goal of low-background measurements on weakly diffracting samples. As a proof of principle, we used microcrystals of the 24 kDa rapid encystment protein (REP24) to provide a benchmark for polymer/graphene sandwich performance. The REP24 microcrystal unit cell obtained from our sandwiched in-vacuum sample was consistent with previously established unit-cell parameters and with those measured by us without encapsulation in humidified helium, indicating that the platform is robust against evaporative losses. While significant scattering from water was observed because of the sample-deposition method, the polymer/graphene sandwich itself was shown to contribute minimally to background scattering.

The most common question I’ve been asked about the statewide Controller race this election year is the same question I get every four years. “Wait, we have one?”

The inevitable follow-up question: “What does this person do?” Down-ballot races in California’s state election can seem like a tedious part of a the voting process. Most of us just don't take the time to research them. In 2010, the last time we elected statewide executives, 435,308 of those people who voted for Governor just didn’t bother to vote for anybody in the Controller race. 

But in addition to being the chief fiscal officer of the 8th-largest economy in the world, the Controller sits on something like 80 state commissions and boards. And if you’re interested in California’s environment, a biggie there is the State Lands Commission.

The State Lands Commission oversees roughly 4 million acres of submerged land and tidelands, holding them in trust for the public. Right now it's looking at policy alternatives to respond to sea level rise. It manage the state's offshore oil-drilling leases. It even gets authority over historical shipwrecks

Three issues coming before to the Lands Commission mean the Controller matters:  

Positions on these issues don’t really come up when it comes to the Controller race, though both Betty Yee and Ashley Swearengin have gone on the record to say they’re against fracking.

Rob Marshall's 'Into the Woods' gets lost in Sondheim's Irony

Rob Marshall is either the bravest director in Hollywood or the most foolhardy. Three of his five theatrical films — the musicals "Chicago," "Nine" and now "Into the Woods" — don't just invite comparison to the eccentric genius of other artists, they insist on it.

Originally a Bob Fosse stage project, "Chicago" was so imbued with Fosse's vitriolic spirit that even in Marshall's more straightforward hands the movie version felt like the missing piece in a triptych with Fosse's "Cabaret" and "All That Jazz."

"Nine" is the musical created from Fellini's masterpiece "8 1/2."

Odd enough that someone thought Fellini's intimate but epic fugue on his own creative doubts and sexual fantasies should be adapted by others for Broadway; stranger still to re-import the hybrid back to the screen, in the workmanlike form Marshall gave to it.

And now we have "Into the Woods," a film placing Marshall in the long line of moviemakers defeated by Sondheim's difficult musical brilliance and penchant for challenging material. It's distinguished company, reaching back all the way to "A Hard Day's Night" director Richard Lester's re-invention of "A Funny Thing Happened (On the Way to the Forum)" as a kind of psychedelic Keystone Cops movie, and forward to Tim Burton's more adept but still wrong-headed Murnau-meets-Hammer-Horror approach to "Sweeney Todd."

Even director Hal Prince, the principal theatrical collaborator during Sondheim's most fertile and formative period, made an absolute hash of their shared stage success "A Little Night Music" in a film version later disavowed by both men, and mostly remembered for Elizabeth Taylor's chirpy and discernibly flat rendition of "Send in the Clowns."

It's just possible that the real problem is that Sondheim's self-reflexive and deconstructive impulse (his musicals are almost always and to varying degrees commentaries on the Musical itself) makes his projects unfit for screen adaptation. In movies, we miss the artifice of the proscenium, the sweat on the actor's brow. But if any of Sondheim's late-period projects held out the hope of a successful movie version it was surely "Into the Woods," a droll recombination of the fairytale form's literary DNA into something like Sondheim's masterpiece "Company," set in a realm of magic beanstalks and slippers made of glass.

The characters are straight out of the Disney pantheon (or "Shrek"): Cinderella meets Rapunzel meets Red Riding Hood meets Jack and his Beanstalk, with a generic Wicked Witch, a couple of not so charming Prince Charmings, plus a peasant couple thrown in. But the issues at stake — marital fidelity, raising children, the fear of aging and death — are complicated, and filled with gray tones which Sondheim and librettist James Lapine masterfully etched across the fairytale's Manichean black and white.

What seemed audacious when Sondheim and Lapine conceived it in 1987 ought to fit comfortably into the era of "Sleepy Hollow" and "Maleficent," but in Marshall's hands, it does not. The good news is that though populated by what old school TV shows used to call a Galaxy of Today's Brightest Stars (Anna Kendrick as an appealingly unglamorous Cinderella; Chris Pine as the nymphomaniac Prince who stalks her; Meryl Streep quite moving in the Wicked Witch role made famous on Broadway by Bernadette Peters) this is mostly a very well-sung movie. There have been controversial excisions and revisions (enabled by Lapine, who is Marshall's screenwriter), but as an introduction to one of Sondheim's more beloved scores, "Into the Woods" makes for a solid musical primer.

But though Marshall has taken a lot of flack for daring to cut out characters (most notably the stage production's Narrator, who served as a kind of Greek Chorus in the original) and for softening plot points (Rapunzel died onstage), the big problem is that Marshall isn't nearly ruthless enough in rethinking "Into the Woods" as an honest-to-God movie. There are many moments (Johnny Depp ending a scene with a stagy howl at the Moon that virtually screams "and... fade out!;" the unseen death of a major character) where Marshall embraces the limitations of stagecraft when something bigger and more cinematic is needed, as if afraid to mar the pedigree of Broadway with Hollywood's debased visual stamp.

"Giants in the Sky," Jack's coming-of-age number, where he describes finding manhood in the sexual and physical dangers available above the clouds in the Giant's Castle, is a showstopper onstage, where we're willing to accept rhetoric in place of physical immediacy. Onscreen, it's simply frustrating for a character to suddenly appear and tell us he's just had the adventure of a lifetime, and that it's too bad we missed it.

The Woods themselves — both character and symbol onstage, a kind of living maze representing moral confusion — are lush here and geographically nondescript, like a particularly plush unit set, done up in a generic Lloyd Webber-meets-Disney house style.

Perhaps most unfortunately of all, Marshall seems constitutionally incapable of conveying the pervasive satiric impulse at the heart of the Sondheim/Lapine original, which could have been called "What Happens After Happily Ever After." Without ironic distancing, the film's second half, where the characters betray each other in decidedly contemporary sexual and self-interested terms, plays as non-sequitur.

It's possible to imagine a more idiosyncratic movie director who both understands and embraces the arsenal of cinematic effects available through editing, camera movement and design transforming "Into the Woods" into a rousing cinematic triumph — the young Terry Gilliam comes to mind. But Hollywood doesn't really embrace its daring cranks and visionaries very often, as Gilliam's difficult career demonstrates. Whenever possible, today's studios like to import genius at a safe remove, and then hand it off to a reliable journeyman who won't make waves or piss off the suits. The limitations of that approach are visible in every scene of "Into the Woods," and perhaps they explain its failure best of all. It's one thing not to be up to the task of adapting a work of odd brilliance. It's something else again to not even take it on.

New combined-analysis technique explores environmental impact of European trade

The global production, trade and use of goods and services has a significant impact on the environment — and rates of consumption are rising. A new study combines two assessment methods to quantify the impact of European trade on the environment. It finds that, overall, the EU was a net importer of environmental impact from 2000 to 2010, that machinery, equipment and vehicles contributed most to the EU’s export impacts and that the EU’s trade balance (import impact minus export impact) is increasing over time. The two assessment methods complement one another well and could form the basis for future country or region-wide studies, suggest the researchers, by enabling a detailed analysis of individual steps within a product’s trade flow, while also providing a larger picture of the overall process.

Can 3D printing reduce environmental impacts in the automotive industry?

As 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), begins to replace conventional manufacturing, the environmental impacts of its implementation must be assessed. This study conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) to investigate the environmental and resource implications of using AM to manufacture the metal parts of an engine in a light distribution truck. In the LCA, the impacts of both present and possible future states of AM technology were compared with current conventional manufacturing. The results suggest that there are potential environmental and resource benefits1 to AM technologies, but that these benefits rely on the achievement of a clean energy source and further technological development.

Food waste: prevention in the service sector would have major environmental benefits

Approximately 88 megatonnes (Mt) of food are wasted every year in the European Union, causing 186 metric tons (Mt) carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq) — a universal measure for all greenhouse gases. The impact of food waste on the climate, acidification and eutrophication is around 15–16% of the environmental impact of the entire food chain. In developed countries, food waste is high at the point of consumption— so significantly reducing food losses would require a food-waste reduction in households and the food-services sector.
