#366: Do Bloody Anything: The Changing Role of the DBA

In August of 2018 we did a program entitled Developer Evolution: What’s Rocking Roles in IT. That program focused primarily on the forces that are reshaping the role of the software developer. In this program we shift the focus to the DBA -- the Database Administrator -- and the evolve-or-perish choices that face those in that role. Bringing their insight to the discussion is an international panel of experts who represent years of DBA experience, and some of the forces that are transforming that role.

#387 Managing Massive Change & Thriving in the Chaos of 2020

Jim Grisanzio from the Oracle Developer Relations Team talks with Simerjeet Singh in this extensive conversation about how to deal with the massive change we are all experiencing in 2020. Simerjeet is a noted motivational speaker, entrepreneur, and performance coach in India, and he was the keynote speaker at last year's Oracle Groundbreakers Sangam 19 Conference in Hyderabad, which is the annual event from the All India Oracle User Group (AIOUG).

In December 2019 Simerjeet was the keynote speaker at the All India Oracle Users Group's annual conference, Sangam, in Hyderabad, India (photos). He spoke about thriving in a "VUCA World" -- Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous). See our interview here on YouTube right after his keynote. Our conversation in this podcast episode (video here) is a recent follow up to that initial meeting at Sangam 19. We talk about some of the challenges 2020 has brought into our lives and how developers and administrators can adapt and thrive when situations are totally out of control.

APEX Changed my Life

There are many times during this discussion with Monica Godoy where she expresses her passion for the Oracle Application Express (APEX) technology and also the APEX community. "APEX changed my life," she said, talking about how she could finally build the applications she wanted to using this innovative development tool. And it's a life changer for developers in the community as well because many developers around the world aren't shy about expressing their enthusiasm about Oracle APEX.

Monica is a product manager on the APEX team in Colombia, where she's lived her entire life. In this episode she gives an update on the latest bits in APEX 21.1 and she talks about how helpful the community has been around the world.

Second Trailer for '2073' Doc About Fighting to Stop Climate Change

"We are worth more when we are addicted, polarized, and misinformed... than we are if we are living, breathing, free citizens." Neon revealed a second trailer for 2073, a frightening doc about climate change and the destructive future we're headed towards. Now set for a release in December in the US. It's the latest documentary film from Oscar-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia, known for Senna, Amy, Diego Maradona, and others. 2073 is a hybrid doc - featuring a live-action sci-fi segment starring Samantha Morton living in a dystopian future ruined by climate change & authoritarianism (the year 2073); along with doc segments showing how we could get there, giving clear-eyed facts about the rise of right-wing authoritarianism and libertarianism worldwide – which won't stop climate change. "Through a genre-busting mix of archive and drama Ghost witnesses the terrifying threats facing us: a Democratic recession, the rise of neo-fascism, the Climate Disaster and the intrusion of surveillance technology. This is not science fiction. This is happening now." This premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival - where I saw it. Alas despite being a good idea, the film is rather boring and won't have much of an impact. Sadly. Though we do […]

Trump’s reelection has sweeping climate change consequences

https://www.axios.com/2024/11/06/trump-victory-sweeping-climate-consequences By Andrew Freedman Former President Donald Trump‘s reelection threatens to worsen global climate change by altering the trajectory of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, eroding federal climate research and forecasting, and abdicating America’s leadership role in global climate negotiations. Why it matters: His return to the White House comes at a time when climate scientists have warned […]
