field Taking Service Design into the Field By feeds.uxmag.com Published On :: Wed, 30 Sep 15 14:35:16 +0000 September 30, 2015By their very nature, heuristics offer a hands-on approach to discovery, where knowledge is culled through trial and error. They are rules of thumb that give us a framework as we move through the research and design process. In service design, this kind of framework is also valuable for assessing completed projects to find the weak links. A heuristic can apply to a single interaction as well as to the overall service eco-system. Heuristics can be applied to a single moment in time or to a user’s entire long-term relationship with a service. This conceptual approach to design recognizes that experiences are coproduced, and that human interaction is a key component of many, if not all, services. As systems grow ever more sophisticated and interconnected, designers will continue to face new challenges. Service design heuristics can help us to frame and think about...read more By Usability Matters Full Article

field Soft X-ray varied-line-spacing gratings fabricated by near-field holography using an electron beam lithography-written phase mask By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-08-16 A fabrication method comprising near-field holography (NFH) with an electron beam lithography (EBL)-written phase mask was developed to fabricate soft X-ray varied-line-spacing gratings (VLSGs). An EBL-written phase mask with an area of 52 mm × 30 mm and a central line density greater than 3000 lines mm−1 was used. The introduction of the EBL-written phase mask substantially simplified the NFH optics for pattern transfer. The characterization of the groove density distribution and diffraction efficiency of the fabricated VLSGs indicates that the EBL–NFH method is feasible and promising for achieving high-accuracy groove density distributions with corresponding image properties. Vertical stray light is suppressed in the soft X-ray spectral range. Full Article text
field Progress in HAXPES performance combining full-field k-imaging with time-of-flight recording By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-11-01 An alternative approach to hard-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) has been established. The instrumental key feature is an increase of the dimensionality of the recording scheme from 2D to 3D. A high-energy momentum microscope detects electrons with initial kinetic energies up to 8 keV with a k-resolution of 0.025 Å−1, equivalent to an angular resolution of 0.034°. A special objective lens with k-space acceptance up to 25 Å−1 allows for simultaneous full-field imaging of many Brillouin zones. Combined with time-of-flight (ToF) parallel energy recording this yields maximum parallelization. Thanks to the high brilliance (1013 hν s−1 in a spot of <20 µm diameter) of beamline P22 at PETRA III (Hamburg, Germany), the microscope set a benchmark in HAXPES recording speed, i.e. several million counts per second for core-level signals and one million for d-bands of transition metals. The concept of tomographic k-space mapping established using soft X-rays works equally well in the hard X-ray range. Sharp valence band k-patterns of Re, collected at an excitation energy of 6 keV, correspond to direct transitions to the 28th repeated Brillouin zone. Measured total energy resolutions (photon bandwidth plus ToF-resolution) are 62 meV and 180 meV FWHM at 5.977 keV for monochromator crystals Si(333) and Si(311) and 450 meV at 4.0 keV for Si(111). Hard X-ray photoelectron diffraction (hXPD) patterns with rich fine structure are recorded within minutes. The short photoelectron wavelength (10% of the interatomic distance) `amplifies' phase differences, making full-field hXPD a sensitive structural tool. Full Article text
field Full-field spectroscopic measurement of the X-ray beam from a multilayer monochromator using a hyperspectral X-ray camera By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-01-01 Multilayer monochromator devices are commonly used at (imaging) beamlines of synchrotron facilities to shape the X-ray beam to relatively small bandwidth and high intensity. However, stripe artefacts are often observed and can deteriorate the image quality. Although the intensity distribution of these artefacts has been described in the literature, their spectral distribution is currently unknown. To assess the spatio-spectral properties of the monochromated X-ray beam, the direct beam has been measured for the first time using a hyperspectral X-ray detector. The results show a large number of spectral features with different spatial distributions for a [Ru, B4C] strip monochromator, associated primarily with the higher-order harmonics of the undulator and monochromator. It is found that their relative contributions are sufficiently low to avoid an influence on the imaging data. The [V, B4C] strip suppresses these high-order harmonics even more than the former, yet at the cost of reduced efficiency. Full Article text
field Zn and Ni complexes of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylates: crystal field stabilization matters! By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-05-31 Six reaction products of ZnII and NiII with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2Lig1), 4-chloropyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2Lig2) and 4-hydroxypyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2Lig3) are used to pinpoint the structural consequences of crystal field stabilization by an incomplete d shell. The pseudo-octahedral ZnII coordination sphere in bis(6-carboxypicolinato)zinc(II) trihydrate, [Zn(C7H4NO4)2]·3H2O or [Zn(HLig1)2]·3H2O, (1), is significantly less regular than that about NiII in the isostructural compound bis(6-carboxypicolinato)nickel(II) trihydrate, [Ni(C7H4NO4)2]·3H2O or [Ni(HLig1)2]·3H2O, (2). The ZnII complexes poly[(4-chloropyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato)zinc(II)], [Zn(C7H2ClNO4)]n or [Zn(Lig2)]n, (3), and poly[[(4-hydroxypyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato)zinc(II)] monohydrate], {[Zn(C7H3NO5)]·H2O}n or {[Zn(Lig3)]·H2O}n, (4), represent two-dimensional coordination polymers with chelating and bridging pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate ligands in which the coordination polyhedra about the central cations cannot be associated with any regular shape; their coordination environments range between trigonal–bipyramidal and square-pyramidal geometries. In contrast, the corresponding adducts of the diprotonated ligands to NiII, namely triaqua(4-chloropyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato)nickel(II), [Ni(C7H2ClNO4)(H2O)3] or [NiLig2(OH2)3)], (5), and triaqua(4-hydroxypyridine-2,6-dicarboxylato)nickel(II) 1.7-hydrate, [Ni(C7H3NO5)(H2O)3]·1.7H2O or [NiLig3(OH2)3)]·1.7H2O, (6), feature rather regular octahedral coordination spheres about the transition-metal cations, thus precluding the formation of analogous extended structures. field Magnetic field-induced magnetostructural transition and huge tensile superelasticity in an oligocrystalline Ni–Cu–Co–Mn–In microwire By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-07-11 Meta-magnetic shape-memory alloys combine ferroelastic order with ferromagnetic order and exhibit attractive multifunctional properties, but they are extremely brittle, showing hardly any tensile deformability, which impedes their practical application. Here, for the first time, an Ni–Cu–Co–Mn–In microwire has been developed that simultaneously exhibits a magnetic field-induced first-order meta-magnetic phase transition and huge tensile superelasticity. A temperature-dependent in situ synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction investigation reveals that the martensite of this Ni43.7Cu1.5Co5.1Mn36.7In13 microwire shows a monoclinic six-layered modulated structure and the austenite shows a cubic structure. This microwire exhibits an oligocrystalline structure with bamboo grains, which remarkably reduces the strain incompatibility during deformation and martensitic transformation. As a result, huge tensile superelasticity with a recoverable strain of 13% is achieved in the microwire. This huge tensile superelasticity is in agreement with our theoretical calculations based on the crystal structure and lattice correspondence of austenite and martensite and the crystallographic orientation of the grains. Owing to the large magnetization difference between austenite and martensite, a pronounced magnetic field-induced magnetostructural transition is achieved in the microwire, which could give rise to a variety of magnetically driven functional properties. For example, a large magnetocaloric effect with an isothermal entropy change of 12.7 J kg−1 K−1 (under 5 T) is obtained. The realization of magnetic-field- and tensile-stress-induced structural transformations in the microwire may pave the way for exploiting the multifunctional properties under the coupling of magnetic field and stress for applications in miniature multifunctional devices. field Why is interoperability between the two fields of chemical crystallography and protein crystallography so difficult? By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-08-13 The interoperability of chemical and biological crystallographic data is a key challenge to research and its application to pharmaceutical design. Research attempting to combine data from the two disciplines, small-molecule or chemical crystallography (CX) and macromolecular crystallography (MX), will face unique challenges including variations in terminology, software development, file format and databases which differ significantly from CX to MX. This perspective overview spans the two disciplines and originated from the investigation of protein binding to model radiopharmaceuticals. The opportunities of interlinked research while utilizing the two databases of the CSD (Cambridge Structural Database) and the PDB (Protein Data Bank) will be highlighted. The advantages of software that can handle multiple file formats and the circuitous route to convert organometallic small-molecule structural data for use in protein refinement software will be discussed. In addition some pointers to avoid being shipwrecked will be shared, such as the care which must be taken when interpreting data precision involving small molecules versus proteins. Full Article text
field Improved chemistry restraints for crystallographic refinement by integrating the Amber force field into Phenix By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-01-01 The refinement of biomolecular crystallographic models relies on geometric restraints to help to address the paucity of experimental data typical in these experiments. Limitations in these restraints can degrade the quality of the resulting atomic models. Here, an integration of the full all-atom Amber molecular-dynamics force field into Phenix crystallographic refinement is presented, which enables more complete modeling of biomolecular chemistry. The advantages of the force field include a carefully derived set of torsion-angle potentials, an extensive and flexible set of atom types, Lennard–Jones treatment of nonbonded interactions and a full treatment of crystalline electrostatics. The new combined method was tested against conventional geometry restraints for over 22 000 protein structures. Structures refined with the new method show substantially improved model quality. On average, Ramachandran and rotamer scores are somewhat better, clashscores and MolProbity scores are significantly improved, and the modeling of electrostatics leads to structures that exhibit more, and more correct, hydrogen bonds than those refined using traditional geometry restraints. In general it is found that model improvements are greatest at lower resolutions, prompting plans to add the Amber target function to real-space refinement for use in electron cryo-microscopy. This work opens the door to the future development of more advanced applications such as Amber-based ensemble refinement, quantum-mechanical representation of active sites and improved geometric restraints for simulated annealing. field Volt-per-Ångstrom terahertz fields from X-ray free-electron lasers By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-04-29 The electron linear accelerators driving modern X-ray free-electron lasers can emit intense, tunable, quasi-monochromatic terahertz (THz) transients with peak electric fields of V Å−1 and peak magnetic fields in excess of 10 T when a purpose-built, compact, superconducting THz undulator is implemented. New research avenues such as X-ray movies of THz-driven mode-selective chemistry come into reach by making dual use of the ultra-short GeV electron bunches, possible by a rather minor extension of the infrastructure. field Full strain tensor measurements with X-ray diffraction and strain field mapping: a simulation study By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-04-15 Strain tensor measurements are important for understanding elastic and plastic deformation, but full bulk strain tensor measurement techniques are still lacking, in particular for dynamic loading. Here, such a methodology is reported, combining imaging-based strain field mapping and simultaneous X-ray diffraction for four typical loading modes: one-dimensional strain/stress compression/tension. Strain field mapping resolves two in-plane principal strains, and X-ray diffraction analysis yields volumetric strain, and thus the out-of-plane principal strain. This methodology is validated against direct molecular dynamics simulations on nanocrystalline tantalum. This methodology can be implemented with simultaneous X-ray diffraction and digital image correlation in synchrotron radiation or free-electron laser experiments. Full Article text
field Reconstructing intragranular strain fields in polycrystalline materials from scanning 3DXRD data By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-02-21 Two methods for reconstructing intragranular strain fields are developed for scanning three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD). The methods are compared with a third approach where voxels are reconstructed independently of their neighbours [Hayashi, Setoyama & Seno (2017). Mater. Sci. Forum, 905, 157–164]. The 3D strain field of a tin grain, located within a sample of approximately 70 grains, is analysed and compared across reconstruction methods. Implicit assumptions of sub-problem independence, made in the independent voxel reconstruction method, are demonstrated to introduce bias and reduce reconstruction accuracy. It is verified that the two proposed methods remedy these problems by taking the spatial properties of the inverse problem into account. Improvements in reconstruction quality achieved by the two proposed methods are further supported by reconstructions using synthetic diffraction data. Full Article text
