lms Reasons for Poor Acceptance of Web-Based Learning using an LMS and VLE in Ghana By Published On :: 2017-05-20 Aim/Purpose: This study investigates the factors that affect the post implementation success of a web-based learning management system at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Background: UPSA implemented an LMS to blend Web-based learning environment with the traditional methods of education to enable working students to acquire education. Methodology: An explanatory sequential mixed method was adopted, under the pragmatic paradigm, to investigate the level of acceptance of web-based learning by students. The effects of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and other social factors were investigated. In all, 4500 final and third-year undergraduate students of UPSA made up the population. A sample size of 870 was used for this study. Contribution: This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by identifying the factors that hinder post-implementation of LMS at the tertiary level in Ghana and adds to the general literature available. Findings: The level of acceptance of LMS seems very low due to poor IT infrastructure, inadequate training, and the relevance of the system to quality lecture delivery. However, students’ intention to use LMS and the usefulness of LMS were perceived to be high, especially among students in higher levels. Recommendations for Practitioners: The authors recommend that IT infrastructure, especially reliable and fast internet connectivity, and adequate training should be provided. Recommendation for Researchers: Further research should be done to confirm if the provision of a more reliable internet system will boost students’ internet proficiency, which in turn will improve their utilisation of the LMS. Impact on Society: Help create awareness of schooling while pursuing a career and also improve interactions between students and lecturers. It will also improve enrolment and possibly reduce the cost of education in the long-run. Future Research: Researchers can look at the possibility of implementing total virtual learning systems at the tertiary level in Ghana. Full Article
lms Student Acceptance of LMS in Indonesian High Schools: The SOR and Extended GETAMEL Frameworks By Published On :: 2024-09-05 Aim/Purpose: This study aims to develop a theoretical model based on the SOR (Stimulus – Organism – Response) framework and GETAMEL, which cover environmental, personal, and learning quality aspects to identify factors influencing students’ acceptance of the use of LMS in high schools, especially after COVID-19 pandemic. Background: After the COVID-19 pandemic, many high schools reopened for in-person classes, which led to a decreased reliance on e-learning. The shift from online to traditional face-to-face learning has influenced students’ perceptions of the importance of e-learning in their academic activities. Consequently, high schools are facing the challenge of ensuring that LMS can still be integrated into the teaching-learning process even after the pandemic ends. Therefore, this study proposes a model to investigate the factors that affect students’ actual use of LMS in the high school environment. Methodology: This study used 890 high school students to validate the theoretical model using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis to deliver direct, indirect, and moderating effect analysis. Contribution: This study combines SOR and acceptance theory to provide a model to explain high school students’ intention to use technology. The involvement of direct, indirect, and moderating effects analysis offers an alternative result and discussion and is considered another contribution of this study from a technical perspective. Findings: The findings show that perceived satisfaction is the most influential factor affecting the use of LMS, followed by perceived usefulness. Meanwhile, from indirect effect analysis, subjective norms and computer self-efficacy were found to indirectly affect actual use through perceived usefulness as a mediator. Content quality was also an indirect predictor of the actual use of LMS through perceived satisfaction. Further, the moderating effect of age influenced perceived satisfaction’s direct effect on actual use. Recommendations for Practitioners: This study provides practical recommendations that can be useful to high schools and other stakeholders in improving the use of LMS in educational environments. Specifically, exploring the implementation of LMS in high schools prior to and following the COVID-19 outbreak can offer valuable insights into the changing educational environment. Recommendation for Researchers: The results of this study present a significant theoretical contribution by employing a comprehensive approach to explain the adoption of LMS among high school students after the COVID-19 pandemic. This contribution extends the GETAMEL framework by incorporating environmental, personal, and learning quality aspects while also analyzing both direct and indirect effects, which have not been previously explored in this context. Impact on Society: This study provides knowledge to high schools for improving the use of LMS in educational environments post-COVID-19, leading to an enhanced teaching-learning process. Future Research: This study, however, is limited to collecting responses exclusively from Indonesian respondents. Therefore, the replication of the finding needs to consider the characteristics and culture similar to Indonesian students, which is regarded as the limitation of this study. Full Article

lms Through Psalms, Hymns, And Songs From The Spirit - Interview With Shane Barnard By www.allaboutworship.com Published On :: Mon, 08 May 2017 12:10:00 -0500 For thousands of younger Gen Xers and older Millennials who were raised in the church, much of our maturing as worshippers is marked by the poetic lyrics and fluid vocals of the duo known as Shane & Shane. I personally remember having Be Near on repeat during a difficult season of transition in my personal life. And I don’t know about you, but just about every guy in my high school youth group could be found working their double strum on acoustic guitar at any given moment. But it wasn’t just their original songs that sunk deep into the hearts of their listeners. Barnard and Everett also have this uncanny ability to take songs recorded years earlier or made popular by big names such as Hillsong or Passion and make them fresh and accessible to our generation of worshippers. They are capitalizing on this significant gift through their latest ministry effort called The Worship Initiative (TWI). I recently got the chance to talk with Shane Barnard at length and hear more about their journey through ministry, how they juggle it all, and their hopes for the future. Hopefully you’ll find the perspective and insight he offered up as encouraging as I did. When I asked him to share the story of how the vision of The Worship Initiative came to be, he jumped right into an impassioned explanation. They had been doing the touring, writing, and recording thing for years and gotten to experience worship from and with just about every kind of stage, venue, and demographic. As they got to know hundreds of worship leaders from everywhere you can think of, they began to see a gaping hole . . . that being the understanding of the true weight of the calling of the worship leader. A scripture that they’d read hundreds of times and even used as a sort of mantra throughout their ministry also played an enormous role in their starting TWI. Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” One day a word jumped off their pages in a way that opened their eyes afresh – THROUGH. These times of worship they were leading on a regular basis were not just a means to an end. They actually serve as one of the primary ways the Church conveys the message of Jesus to raise up a generation of Christ followers who can change the world. Yet somehow, this position has gotten watered down to nothing more than a song leader in most church settings. They suddenly felt a whole new level of responsibility. So the two set out to discover a way to pour into worship leaders around the world, both spiritually and practically. They started by taking a more personal look at their own gifts and bents. Barnard says about Everett, “I can’t think of a better salesman or evangelist . . . He’s just loud, funny, always cutting up, and can win anybody over to do anything . . . and unleashing that in an overseer role and our relational PR person has been awesome to watch. I think God dumped the PR side and evangelist side of Shane so hard into him that I think we still have yet to see what God is going to do in that regard.” Whereas for Barnard, his skill in songwriting and producing contends with just about anyone you could name. Over the last 20 years of ministering together, they’ve learned to “embrace who God has made [them] and not be disappointed in that anymore but just know that this is how God has made [them].” They’ve worked incredibly hard to figure out how to balance all of the overlap between their personal and professional lives, which is inevitable when you’ve worked so closely together for that long. “You would think we would have some kind of system after 20 years, but we are getting better. I would say that a few words come to mind . . . simplifying, strategizing, doing things on purpose. These are the things that have kind of been a banner over our lives the last two or three years.” For a long time, all the different aspects of their lives were spread out all over the DFW area of Texas. Their studio was far south, much of their steady worship leading opportunities were at a church in the heart of Dallas, and they were living a good jump from either of those. So they are in the process of bringing all of those components closer together so that doing life with the families, church community, and ministry partners is easier. Taking this step has made it easier to grow their efforts with The Worship Initiative more rapidly. So what is The Worship Initiative and what does it look like for someone to participate or take advantage of these resources? Basically, an individual can pay a yearly fee and access a list of over 150 (and constantly growing) worship songs that each have multiple tutorial videos and charts accompanying them. These videos break down how to play the songs in different keys, on different instruments, and with varying skill levels. A worship leader on staff at a church can also pay an annual group fee, based on the number of people, for his team to be able to access everything as well. There are also craft training videos for everything from the different instruments and vocals to tech/production and using the number system. If that’s not enough, the site has an entire section dedicated to heart training, where they break down all the different spiritual and practical components for worship leading with the likes of John Piper and Ben Stuart. There are even creative devotionals to accompany every song on the different TWI records. TheWorshipInitiative.com truly is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom for anyone looking to grow as a leader or team member, and there are still exciting things to come. Shane shared a bit about what’s ahead for TWI. “Our next phase of The Worship Initiative is to create what we’re calling learning paths. Some people love to be given a world of information to explore on their own. But most people would really love to be told what to do to get from point A to point B. We will take our existing content and add to it and give them a year long path to stick to and see measurable growth in both skill and leadership.” Given the length of time and the platform they’ve had over these last two decades, I asked Shane how he feels his perspective of worship both personally and within the Church has evolved over the years. “I think worship, and even the idea of worship, has come a long way, in a good way. I think we’ve seen a pretty good uptick on understanding the Romans 12:1 life of worship. I often think back to a time when I was leading worship in a basement or college dorm room for several years, and it was always the oddest songs ever.” He recalled singing, with hands lifted, Make It Right by Kenny Marks (and yes, I might’ve gotten a solid 30 second serenade over the phone . . . it’s fine!) and other obscure songs that really had no purpose or meaning to the one worshipping. Yet, what we see all throughout the Psalms is “this gut-wrenching, very honest, it is okay to pour out your heart to the one who cares for you mentality. . . and that language is okay.” He remembered hearing the words to Breathe for the first time, where it says “I’m desperate for you,” and thinking “is this okay to have this kind of language in front of people? But yes, it is okay even in a congregation or corporately to say ‘I am thirsty for You in a dry land where there is no water.’ In fact that can be really helpful to the person sitting next to you. That can be us ‘singing spiritual hymns and songs to one another’, just that opening up of the heart and the embracing of singing those honest songs and using them to allow ‘the message of Christ to dwell among us richly.’” Learn more about The Worship Initiative, as well as Shane & Shane, at www.theworshipinitiative.com. lms In situ characterization of stresses, deformation and fracture of thin films using transmission X-ray nanodiffraction microscopy By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-01-01 The use of hard X-ray transmission nano- and microdiffraction to perform in situ stress and strain measurements during deformation has recently been demonstrated and used to investigate many thin film systems. Here a newly commissioned sample environment based on a commercially available nanoindenter is presented, which is available at the NanoMAX beamline at the MAX IV synchrotron. Using X-ray nanoprobes of around 60–70 nm at 14–16 keV and a scanning step size of 100 nm, we map the strains, stresses, plastic deformation and fracture during nanoindentation of industrial coatings with thicknesses in the range of several micrometres, relatively strong texture and large grains. The successful measurements of such challenging samples illustrate broad applicability. The sample environment is openly accessible for NanoMAX beamline users through the MAX IV sample environment pool, and its capability can be further extended for specific purposes through additional available modules. lms Factors affecting macromolecule orientations in thin films formed in cryo-EM By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-06-27 The formation of a vitrified thin film embedded with randomly oriented macromolecules is an essential prerequisite for cryogenic sample electron microscopy. Most commonly, this is achieved using the plunge-freeze method first described nearly 40 years ago. Although this is a robust method, the behaviour of different macromolecules shows great variation upon freezing and often needs to be optimized to obtain an isotropic, high-resolution reconstruction. For a macromolecule in such a film, the probability of encountering the air–water interface in the time between blotting and freezing and adopting preferred orientations is very high. 3D reconstruction using preferentially oriented particles often leads to anisotropic and uninterpretable maps. Currently, there are no general solutions to this prevalent issue, but several approaches largely focusing on sample preparation with the use of additives and novel grid modifications have been attempted. In this study, the effect of physical and chemical factors on the orientations of macromolecules was investigated through an analysis of selected well studied macromolecules, and important parameters that determine the behaviour of proteins on cryo-EM grids were revealed. These insights highlight the nature of the interactions that cause preferred orientations and can be utilized to systematically address orientation bias for any given macromolecule and to provide a framework to design small-molecule additives to enhance sample stability and behaviour. lms Orientational analysis of atomic pair correlations in nanocrystalline indium oxide thin films By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-01-01 The application of grazing-incidence total X-ray scattering (GITXS) for pair distribution function (PDF) analysis using >50 keV X-rays from synchrotron light sources has created new opportunities for structural characterization of supported thin films with high resolution. Compared with grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, which is only useful for highly ordered materials, GITXS/PDFs expand such analysis to largely disordered or nanostructured materials by examining the atomic pair correlations dependent on the direction relative to the surface of the supporting substrate. A characterization of nanocrystalline In2O3-derived thin films is presented here with in-plane-isotropic and out-of-plane-anisotropic orientational ordering of the atomic structure, each synthesized using different techniques. The atomic orientations of such films are known to vary based on the synthetic conditions. Here, an azimuthal orientational analysis of these films using GITXS with a single incident angle is shown to resolve the markedly different orientations of the atomic structures with respect to the planar support and the different degrees of long-range order, and hence, the terminal surface chemistries. It is anticipated that orientational analysis of GITXS/PDF data will offer opportunities to extend structural analyses of thin films by providing a means to qualitatively determine the major atomic orientation within nanocrystalline and, eventually, non-crystalline films. lms Time-resolved high-energy X-ray diffraction studies of ultrathin Ni ferrite films on MgO(001) By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2023-11-29 Time-resolved high-energy X-ray diffraction was used during growth of ultrathin NixFe3−xO4 films with varying Ni content (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5) deposited on MgO(001) substrates by reactive molecular beam epitaxy, providing an insight into the growth dynamics of these films. In order to obtain structural information, reciprocal-space maps were recorded and the temporal evolution of the Bragg peaks specific to the octahedral and tetrahedral lattice sites of the inverse spinel structure of NixFe3−xO4 was observed during growth of the films. A time delay, corresponding to a coverage of 1.2–1.8 nm, between the appearance of the Bragg reflections originating from octahedral sites and reflections originating exclusively from tetrahedral sites indicates that the ferrite films grow in two stages. In the initial growth phase, a rock salt interface layer is formed. Afterwards, a structural transition occurs and the films grow in an inverse spinel structure. The thickness of the initial rock salt phase was found to increase with Ni content and to be responsible for atypical strain in the thin films. Films with Ni contents x > 1 do not show a structural transition. These films remain in a (deficient) rock salt structure consisting of a mixed Ni–Fe oxide and do not form a spinel structure at all. They show an increased number of NiO clusters as detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the valence band, accompanied by a significant roughening of the films. Full Article text

A continuous transformation from the diffraction characteristic of misfit dislocations to that of threading dislocations with increasing thickness of epitaxial film is studied. lms Determining pair distribution functions of thin films using laboratory-based X-ray sources By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-08-30 This article demonstrates the feasibility of obtaining accurate pair distribution functions of thin amorphous films down to 80 nm, using modern laboratory-based X-ray sources. The pair distribution functions are obtained using a single diffraction scan without the requirement of additional scans of the substrate or of the air. By using a crystalline substrate combined with an oblique scattering geometry, most of the Bragg scattering of the substrate is avoided, rendering the substrate Compton scattering the primary contribution. By utilizing a discriminating energy filter, available in the latest generation of modern detectors, it is demonstrated that the Compton intensity can further be reduced to negligible levels at higher wavevector values. Scattering from the sample holder and the air is minimized by the systematic selection of pixels in the detector image based on the projected detection footprint of the sample and the use of a 3D-printed sample holder. Finally, X-ray optical effects in the absorption factors and the ratios between the Compton intensity of the substrate and film are taken into account by using a theoretical tool that simulates the electric field inside the film and the substrate, which aids in planning both the sample design and the measurement protocol. He was 79. Charles Grodin was an offbeat actor and writer who scored as a caddish newlywed in “The Heartbreak Kid” and later had roles ranging from Robert De Niro’s counterpart in the comic thriller “Midnight Run” to the bedeviled father in the “Beethoven” comedies. He was 86. Norman Lloyd’s role as kindly Dr. Daniel Auschlander on TV’s “St. Elsewhere” was a single chapter in a distinguished stage and screen career that put him in the company of Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin and other greats. OpenAI also has announced free fine tuning of gpt4o mini until late September (up to 2m tokens/day) so it may be possible to fine tune around some of its guardrails for a reasonable cost.
