Reading Partial or Incomplete Files

Sometimes I'm amazed how one thing can lead to something unexpected.

All I wanted to do was allow Behold to attempt to process "illegal" GEDCOM files. I wanted it to process a GEDCOM if there wasn't a header, had missing sources, or maybe was corrupted in some places.

So I went to the extreme and took a GEDCOM I had and deleted the beginning and the end. It now only had a bunch of individuals and data about those individuals in it, without their families or anything else.

My first run like that gave me a bunch of individuals and nothing more. But individuals in GEDCOMs do have links to their "family" (husband/wife pair) via a FAMS link, and also to their parent's family via a FAMC link. So that got me thinking.

What I had been doing up to now is only including the link one way into Behold's GEDCOM-based data structure. I was expecting that Behold would get the other link from the GEDCOM itself, since GEDCOM requires it. After reading the GEDCOM, Behold goes through an extensive GEDCOM check and reports wherever the links are missing one way.

But then I realized I could add the link both ways when reading them the first time, and simply verify it when it occurs again. Doing this, Behold can get all the information it needs from just one of the links.

Once I added that, my partial file now appeared just about perfect in the Everything Report. When I first saw it, I really couldn't believe it. All the families were figured out and I could hardly tell there was anything wrong with the input file.

As a result, in a few hours, I've changed some core code of Behold for the better.

So now Behold will have yet another possible use. If for some reason, you get part of a GEDCOM file (maybe it got truncated via e-mail), Behold will be able to do a darn good job organizing and reconstructing just about everything that's in it.

Robust and secure file transmission through video streaming using steganography and blockchain

File transfer is always handled by a separate service, sometimes it is a third-party service in videoconferencing. When sending files during a video session, file data flow and video stream are independent of each other. Encryption is a mature method to ensure file security. However, it still has the chance to leave footprints on the intermediate forwarding machines. These footprints can indicate that a file once passed through, some protocol-related logs give clues to the hackers' later investigation. This work proposes a file-sending scheme through the video stream using blockchain and steganography. Blockchain is used as a file slicing and linkage mechanism. Steganography is applied to embed file pieces into video frames that are continuously generated during the session. The scheme merges files into the video stream with no file transfer protocol use and no extra bandwidth consumed by the file to provide trackless file transmission during the video communication.

Matching Authors and Reviewers in Peer Assessment Based on Authors’ Profiles

Aim/Purpose: To encourage students’ engagement in peer assessments and provide students with better-quality feedback, this paper describes a technique for author-reviewer matching in peer assessment systems – a Balanced Allocation algorithm. Background: Peer assessment concerns evaluating the work of colleagues and providing feedback on their work. This process is widely applied as a learning method to involve students in the progress of their learning. However, as students have different ability levels, the efficacy of the peer feedback differs from case to case. Thus, peer assessment may not provide satisfactory results for students. In order to mitigate this issue, this paper explains and evaluates an algorithm that matches the author to a set of reviewers. The technique matches authors and reviewers based on how difficult the authors perceived the assignment to be, and the algorithm then matches the selected author to a group of reviewers who may meet the author’s needs in regard to the selected assignment. Methodology: This study used the Multiple Criteria Decision-Making methodology (MCDM) to determine a set of reviewers from among the many available options. The weighted sum method was used because the data that have been collected in user profiles are expressed in the same unit. This study produced an experimental result, examining the algorithm with a real collected dataset and mock-up dataset. In total, there were 240 students in the real dataset, and it contained self-assessment scores, peer scores, and instructor scores for the same assignment. The mock-up dataset created 1000 records for self-assessment scores. The algorithm was evaluated using focus group discussions with 29 programming students and interviews with seven programming instructors. Contribution: This paper contributes to the field in the following two ways. First, an algorithm using a MCDM methodology was proposed to match authors and reviewers in order to facilitate the peer assessment process. In addition, the algorithm used self-assessment as an initial data source to match users, rather than randomly creating reviewer – author pairs. Findings: The findings show the accurate results of the algorithm in matching three reviewers for each author. Furthermore, the algorithm was evaluated based on students’ and instructors’ perspectives. The results are very promising, as they depict a high level of satisfaction for the Balanced Allocation algorithm. Recommendations for Practitioners: We recommend instructors to consider using the Balanced Allocation algorithm to match students in peer assessments, and consequently to benefit from personalizing peer assessment based on students' needs. Recommendation for Researchers: Several MCDM methods could be expanded upon, such as the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) if different attributes are collected, or the artificial neural network (ANN) if fuzzy data is available in the user profile. Each method is suitable for special cases depending on the data available for decision-making. Impact on Society: Suitable pairing in peer assessment would increase the credibility of the peer assessment process and encourage students’ engagement in peer assessments. Future Research: The Balanced Allocation algorithm could be applied using a single group, and a peer assessment with random matching with another group may also be conducted, followed by performing a t-test to determine the impact of matching on students’ performances in the peer assessment activity.

Document Viewers for Non-Born-Digital Files in DSpace

As more institutions continue to work with large and diverse type of content for their digital repositories, there is an inherent need to evaluate, prototype, and implement user-friendly websites -regardless of the digital files' size, format, location or the content management system in use. This article aims to provide an overview of the need and current development of Document Viewers for digitized objects in DSpace repositories -includign a local viewer developed for an newspaper collection and four other viewers currently implemented in DSpace repositories. According to the DSpace Registry, 22% of institutions are currently storing "Images" in their repositories and 21% are using DSpace for non-traditional IR content such as: Image Repository, Subject Repository, Museum Cultural, or Learning Resources. The combination of current technologies such as Djatoka Image Server, IIPImage Server, DjVu Libre, and the Internet Archive BookReader, as well as the growing number of digital repositories hosting digitized content, suggests that the DSpace community will probably benefit with an "out-of-the-box" Document Viewer, especially one for large, high-resolution, and multi-page objects.

Learning-Based Models for Building User Profiles for Personalized Information Access

Aim/Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the success of deep learning in building user profiles for personalized information access. Background: To better express document content and information during the matching phase of the information retrieval (IR) process, deep learning architectures could potentially offer a feasible and optimal alternative to user profile building for personalized information access. Methodology: This study uses deep learning-based models to deduce the domain of the document deemed implicitly relevant by a user that corresponds to their center of interest, and then used predicted domain by the best given architecture with user’s characteristics to predict other centers of interest. Contribution: This study contributes to the literature by considering the difference in vocabulary used to express document content and information needs. Users are integrated into all research phases in order to provide them with relevant information adapted to their context and their preferences meeting their precise needs. To better express document content and information during this phase, deep learning models are employed to learn complex representations of documents and queries. These models can capture hierarchical, sequential, or attention-based patterns in textual data. Findings: The results show that deep learning models were highly effective for building user profiles for personalized information access since they leveraged the power of neural networks in analyzing and understanding complex patterns in user behavior, preferences, and user interactions. Recommendations for Practitioners: Building effective user profiles for personalized information access is an ongoing process that requires a combination of technology, user engagement, and a commitment to privacy and security. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers involved in building user profiles for personalized information access play a crucial role in advancing the field and developing more innovative deep-based networks solutions by exploring novel data sources, such as biometric data, sentiment analysis, or physiological signals, to enhance user profiles. They can investigate the integration of multimodal data for a more comprehensive understanding of user preferences. Impact on Society: The proposed models can provide companies with an alternative and sophisticated recommendation system to foster progress in building user profiles by analyzing complex user behavior, preferences, and interactions, leading to more effective and dynamic content suggestions. Future Research: The development of user profile evolution models and their integration into a personalized information search system may be confronted with other problems such as the interpretability and transparency of the learning-based models. Developing interpretable machine learning techniques and visualization tools to explain how user profiles are constructed and used for personalized information access seems necessary to us as a future extension of our work.
