Illinois Catholics long for 'normal life' after governor announces lockdown plan

Washington, D.C. Newsroom, May 8, 2020 / 03:10 pm (CNA).- The Diocese of Springfield, Illinois, said that the Church must return to “normal life” after the governor announced plans to ban large gatherings until a COVID-19 vaccine or treatment is available.

Earlier in the week, the state’s Governor JB Pritzker unveiled a five-phase “Restore Illinois” plan that bans gatherings of more than 50 people until a vaccine or treatment is available, or the virus has stopped spreading for a sustained period of time. Health officials have said that a vaccine for the new coronavirus (COVID-19) might not be available for 12 to 18 months. 

Currently, people in the state are allowed to attend religious services of 10 or fewer people, but no gatherings of more than 10 people are permitted until phase 4 of Pritzker’s plan, and the state wouldn’t even be able to “advance” to phase 3 until May 29.

“The Church has certainly done her part in making great sacrifices to slow the spread of this virus,” Andrew Hansen, director of communications for the diocese of Springfield, Illinois, told CNA on Friday.

“That said, the Church must return to her normal life of liturgy and communal worship,” Hansen said, while emphasizing precautions such as social distancing “will likely be the appropriate path longer term for the return to some version of normalcy for the Church.”

Previously, in-person or drive-in religious services were banned in the state. The Thomas More Society filed a lawsuit on behalf of a church in Lena, Ill., on April 30. Later that evening a paragraph was added to the governor’s executive order allowing for people to leave their homes to attend religious services of ten or fewer people, the society’s president Peter Breen told CNA.

The next day, May 1, the archdiocese of Chicago announced it would be resuming public Masses with 10 or fewer people.

According to the “Restore Illinois” plan, there could not be any gathering of between 11 and 50 people in size until phase 4 of the plan—“Revitalization.”

That phase can start only when certain conditions have been met: the positivity rate of COVID tests is at or under 20% and doesn’t rise by more than 10 points over 14 days; hospital admissions don’t increase for 28 days; and hospitals have at least 14% “surge capacity” in ICU beds, medical and surgical beds, and ventilators.

Pitzker clarified in a Wednesday press conference that religious services would be part of this 50-person limit in phase 4, and schools would not be allowed to reopen until then, raising questions of how tuition-dependent Catholic schools might fare in the fall if remote learning is still widely utilized.

The state’s superintendent of education has said that at least some schools might have to begin the new school year with remote learning, or with students attending classes in-person only on certain days.

“So we continue to hope and pray schools will reopen next school year. Certainly, when our schools reopen, new measures and precautions will be in place,” Hansen told CNA.

The president of DePaul University, located in Chicago, announced earlier this week that the university already plans to “minimize our footprint on campus this fall,” and that an announcement of the fall plans could happen by June 15.

Corticosteroids inhibit the expression of many proinflammatory cytokines released during the course of community-acquired pneumonia infection. Corticosteroids have been found in some studies to be associated with improved clinical outcomes in adults with pneumonia. No studies have investigated corticosteroid use in children with pneumonia.

Results showed that corticosteroid treatment in children with pneumonia is common and its use is highly variable across institutions. Although corticosteroid therapy may benefit children with acute wheezing treated with β-agonists, corticosteroid therapy may lead to worse outcomes for children without wheezing. Predictors of Cognitive Function and Recovery 10 Years After Traumatic Brain Injury in Young Children

Previous research has demonstrated that young children with traumatic brain injury are at elevated risk of poor outcomes, particularly following severe injuries. These deficits persist until at least 5 years postinsult. Factors predicting outcomes in this age group have not been established.

Association Between a Functional Polymorphism in the MAOA Gene and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

There is evidence of an impaired respiratory regulation in SIDS, in which serotonergic and noradrenergic neurons are involved. Monoamine oxidase A is the enzyme that degrades both neurotransmitters, and genetic variation of this gene might contribute to SIDS.

Antenatal Glucocorticoid Exposure and Long-Term Alterations in Aortic Function and Glucose Metabolism

In utero exposure to glucocorticoids in animal models influences vascular development. Studies in young adults have shown that exposure to antenatal glucocorticoids alters glucose metabolism, but it is not known whether there are any cardiovascular effects.

The causes of Perthes disease are unknown. There is considerable evidence that the disease has a vascular mechanism, although the nature of this is unknown. There is some suggestion that affected individuals may have a heightened cardiovascular risk in adulthood.

Dental Composite Restorations and Psychosocial Function in Children

Dental composites composed of bisphenol A (BPA) derivatives are common alternatives to amalgam, but may release BPA. Gestational BPA exposure has been associated with poorer behavior in children. A safety trial of amalgam found worse psychosocial outcomes for children randomized to composites.

In the trial, greater exposure to bisphenol-A-glycidyl-methacrylate-based dental composite in children aged 6 to 10 years was associated with worse self-reported psychosocial functioning at 5-year follow-up. Immature animals exposed to anesthetics display apoptotic neurodegeneration and long-term cognitive deficiencies. In children, studies of cognitive deficits associated with anesthesia exposure have yielded mixed results. Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome and Functional and Structural Brain Impairments in Adolescence

Despite the dramatic rise in prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among children and adolescents, and that MetS is associated with cognitive and brain impairments among adults, no data on the impact of MetS on the brain exist in children.

It provides the first data on the impact of MetS on brain in adolescence. We show reductions in cognitive function and brain structural integrity in nondiabetic adolescents with MetS, thus suggesting that even pre-clinical metabolic illness may give rise to brain complications. Functioning of 7-Year-Old Children Born at 32 to 35 Weeks' Gestational Age

Approximately 80% of all preterm children are born moderately preterm (32–36 weeks’ gestation). Moderately preterm children are at increased risk for developmental delays, but the specific neuropsychological functions that may underlie these delays are unknown.

Moderately preterm birth is associated with poorer performance in intelligence, attention, visuospatial reasoning, and executive functioning. Risk Factors for Renal Injury in Children With a Solitary Functioning Kidney

A reduced nephron number is associated with glomerular hyperfiltration, resulting in renal injury such as hypertension, proteinuria, and chronic kidney disease. Patients with a solitary functioning kidney have an increased risk of dialysis in early adulthood.

Functional Abdominal Pain in Childhood and Long-term Vulnerability to Anxiety Disorders

At the time of their pediatric medical evaluation, patients with functional abdominal pain (FAP) have higher levels of emotional symptoms compared with youth without FAP. No controlled prospective study has evaluated psychiatric outcomes for FAP patients in adulthood.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Pediatric Functional Abdominal Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Pediatric functional abdominal pain is common and costly. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a promising treatment for these complaints, but solid evidence for its effectiveness is lacking.

This randomized controlled trial shows that CBT reduces abdominal pain in 60% of children 1 year after treatment. Six sessions of CBT delivered by trained master’s students in psychology were equally effective as 6 visits to an experienced pediatrician. (Read the full article)

Psychiatric Functioning and Quality of Life in Young Patients With Cardiac Rhythm Devices

Initial studies in children and young adults have identified higher levels of anxiety and lower quality of life scores in patients with implantable cardioverter–defibrillators. Few studies are available looking at the same questions in young patients with pacemakers.

Intellectual, Behavioral, and Emotional Functioning in Children With Syndromic Craniosynostosis

Children who have syndromic craniosynostosis are at risk for developing intellectual disability, behavioral and emotional problems. Study results were often based on small samples and wide age-based variation, using non-validated instruments and describing no clear inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Intellectual, behavioral, and emotional functioning is described in a national sample (N = 82) of school-aged children with syndromic craniosynostosis. Rapid cranial MRI is a radiation-free method to assess children with possible ventricular shunt malfunction. However, the test performance of rapid cranial MRI has never been compared with that of cranial CT, the current reference standard.

Birth Size and Brain Function 75 Years Later

The fetal origins of adult disease hypothesis proposes that suboptimal fetal development may condition the later risk of disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. However, this hypothesis has never been tested for diseases of the aging brain.

This first study of its kind provides clinical measures suggesting that small birth size, as an indicator of an adverse intrauterine environment, has lifelong consequences for brain tissue volume and cognitive function. In addition, it shows that the effects of a suboptimal intrauterine environment on late-life cognitive function were particularly present in those with lower educational levels. Functional Status in Children With ADHD at Age 6-8: A Controlled Community Study

Children who have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) attending clinical services have poorer outcomes in adolescence on a range of measures. However, it is unknown how early in development these impairments appear, particularly for community-ascertained samples.

Unconditional Regard Buffers Children's Negative Self-Feelings

Studies have shown that setbacks, such as receiving low school grades, lead children to experience negative self-feelings (eg, shame, insecurity, powerlessness). Psychological theory predicts that unconditional regard can buffer this adverse impact of setbacks. However, causal evidence is lacking.

This randomized field experiment shows that briefly reflecting on experiences of unconditional regard buffers children’s negative self-feelings after an academic setback 3 weeks later. Diet, Exercise, and Endothelial Function in Obese Adolescents

Adolescent obesity is characterized by endothelial dysfunction at the macrovascular and microvascular level; high endothelial microparticle (EMP) and low endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) counts contribute to these processes. Although reversal of macrovascular endothelial dysfunction is feasible, clinical evidence regarding microvascular endothelial dysfunction is scarce.

Ten months of diet and exercise training improves microvascular endothelial function (peak response) in obese adolescents. EPC and EMP displayed a biphasic response, with an increase in EPC at 5 months and a decrease in EMP at the end of the treatment. (Read the full article)
