Episode 567: Coronavirus & the potential impact on football

In this bonus episode in the wake of Arsenal's trip to Man City tonight being postponed because of exposure to the Coronavirus, I'm joined by Dr James McInerney – Head of the School of Life Sciences at Nottingham University. I ask him about the virus – now officially declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation – how it spreads, the symptoms and the effects, and what we can do to slow its spread. We also chat about what the impact the Coronavirus is having in other places tells us about what's in store for England and other countries where infections are beginning to increase. Plus what it might mean for football, and mass gatherings in general as this crazy season takes another bizarre twist.

Trump’s Misleading Ad on Coronavirus Testing

A new Trump campaign ad claims that President Donald Trump took "fast action" in regard to testing for the novel coronavirus. While “fast action” is subjective, pandemic experts say the U.S. did not move quickly to set up an adequate system and in fact lagged behind other countries.

What it’s like to be a single parent who has coronavirus.

I knew something was wrong the day my son lay in bed in an emergency room waiting for his MRI to come back. A nurse entered his room and said, “Has your son been outside the country recently?” I did a double-take. “It’s pretty late to be asking that, isn’t it?” “Ma’am, yes or no?” […]

Police Brutality in the Time of Coronavirus

Covid-19 is shining yet another spotlight on American systemic racism as African Americans face higher rates of death from coronavirus, as well as policing in the form of social distancing patrols, which are often racially disparate, inequitable, and aggressive. A majority of businesses have reduced operations or closed, but the NYPD has not slowed operations at all during the pandemic. Even in the midst of a historic crisis, the police oppression of Black and Brown communities perseveres. Earlier this week in New York City’s East Village, the violent arrest of a Black man allegedly defying social distancing orders was captured on camera by a witness. This was one of three arrests in the area that day by unmasked officers breaking the very social distancing rules they were ostensibly enforcing. All of these arrests have been condemned by the Legal Aid Society which is asking the NYPD to reconsider their selective social distancing enforcement. The NYPD is currently investigating the incident. In Philadelphia last month, mask requirements on public transportation led to the accosting of a Black bus rider by eight or nine police officers who then forced him off the bus instead of handing him a mask as they have […]
