The Law Library of Congress is proud to present the report, Regulation and Funding of Alternative Maternity Care Providers.

This report includes surveys of the regulation and funding of two types of alternative maternity care providers, midwives and doulas, in 10 countries around the world. All researched jurisdictions regulate the work of midwives, which is not the case when it comes to doula activities. Health care, which includes midwife services, is funded either by the government at the federal, provincial, territorial, or local level or by a national health insurance scheme. Doula services are not funded in the vast majority of the researched jurisdictions.

This report discusses the legal provisions governing inheritance rights, the legal age of marriage, and the transmittal of citizenship through the mother in 18 Middle Eastern and North African countries, including Israel, Iran, and 16 Arab countries (Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen). To the extent applicable, the report also discusses constitutional provisions promoting gender equality in these countries.

For children and young adults with certain relapsed B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), the immunotherapy drug blinatumomab is superior to standard chemotherapy, an NCI-sponsored Children’s Oncology Group trial shows.

Testing for prostate cancer with a combined biopsy method led to more accurate diagnosis and prediction of the course of the disease in an NCI study. The method is poised to reduce the risk of prostate cancer overtreatment and undertreatment.

An NCI clinical trial finds the drug selumetinib improves outcomes for children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), shrinking inoperable tumors called plexiform neurofibromas, reducing pain, and improving function and overall quality of life.

A new study offers insight into genetic alterations associated with osteosarcoma, the most common bone tumor of children and adolescents, and the findings have implications for genetic testing of children with osteosarcoma and their families.

Patients will swab their own nose using a testing kit sent by the company and will mail it in an insulated package back to the company.

Because of its genetic complexity, the potato didn’t undergo a “green revolution” like other staple crops. It can take more than 15 years to breed a new kind of potato that farmers can grow, and genetic engineering just won’t work for tackling complex traits such as increased yield or heat resistance.
