raw Efficient data extraction from neutron time-of-flight spin-echo raw data By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-08-29 Neutron spin-echo spectrometers with a position-sensitive detector and operating with extended time-of-flight-tagged wavelength frames are able to collect a comprehensive set of data covering a large range of wavevector and Fourier time space with only a few instrumental settings in a quasi-continuous way. Extracting all the information contained in the raw data and mapping them to a suitable physical space in the most efficient way is a challenge. This article reports algorithms employed in dedicated software, DrSpine (data reduction for spin echo), that achieves this goal and yields reliable representations of the intermediate scattering function S(Q, t) independent of the selected `binning'. raw Chinese supply of critical raw materials could pose long-term risks to European wind- and solar-energy industries By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 10 August 2017 9:23:19 GMT A recent study has analysed risks to European renewable industries from the Chinese supply of critical raw materials. The offshore wind sector was found to be the most vulnerable of the renewable industries to supply risks. EU and industry strategies should be able to deal with these supply risks in the short term, but there are potential long-term risks to solar and wind sectors. The development of alternative technologies less reliant on these raw materials, and methods to recycle these materials is, therefore, a priority. Full Article

raw A new approach: Assessing the vulnerability of critical raw materials in the automotive industry By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 20 June 2019 11:23:19 GMT In the automobile industry, the development and manufacture of increasingly complex technological components — catalytic converters, LEDs, electric motors, batteries — requires increasingly complex and diverse raw materials with specific qualities. The technological and economic importance of these materials, combined with their vulnerability to supply shortages and likelihood of supply interruptions, indicates their ‘criticality’. This study uses a new methodology to explore the criticality of 27 key metals used in the automotive industry and other sectors, and highlights six that are especially vulnerable: rhodium, dysprosium, neodymium, terbium, europium and praseodymium. The researchers found there was limited recycling and substitution of these metals and a high possibility of restrictions to their supply. Full Article

raw Circular economy could boost employment and cut raw material extraction by 2030 By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 28 November 2019 11:23:19 GMT A more circular economy could reduce global levels of raw material extraction by 10% by 2030, a new study suggests. It could also drive a slight increase in overall employment levels, but the types of jobs available would change significantly, moving away from low- and medium-skilled work in the manufacturing and mining sectors and opening up more opportunities for medium- and high-skilled jobs in the service sector. raw Seafloor trawling's ecological impacts revealed by simple sampling system By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 30 APR 2014 9:23:19 GMT Trawling's impacts on marine ecosystems can be assessed using simple metrics which characterise easy-to-obtain samples of fish, new research suggests. The Portuguese study shows that groups of fish become dominated by fewer species as fishing intensity increases, while their total biomass declines. Moreover, in the most fished areas there were other noteworthy changes, such as substantial reductions in the proportion of sharks and rays. Full Article
raw Trawling threatens to destroy deep-sea ecosystems By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 18 Sep 2014 9:23:19 GMT Intensive trawling could turn seafloor ecosystems into ‘deserts of the sea’, new research warns. The study found that continuous bottom trawling for shrimp in a deep-sea Spanish canyon has damaged the foundations of marine ecosystems by dramatically reducing seafloor biodiversity and nutrients in sediment. raw Deeper seafloor habitats most at risk from bottom trawling By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 01 JAN 2015 9:23:19 GMT Bottom trawling-dragging nets along the sea floor-reduces biodiversity most severely in deeper, species-rich habitats, a study suggests. New research in the Dutch North Sea has shown that this type of trawling had less effect on species richness in shallow areas with coarse sediments. These results suggest that efforts should be made to reduce trawling in these kinds of sensitive habitats, the researchers say. Full Article
raw Environmental DNA survey technique for deepwater fish can complement trawl surveys By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 18 May 2017 9:23:19 GMT A survey of deepwater fisheries off the coast of Greenland which used traces of fish DNA has produced similar results to trawl surveys and fishing catches. The ‘environmental DNA’ (eDNA) technique can therefore complement trawl data, the researchers say. It may be particularly useful for surveying large species — which can often avoid bottom trawls — or cryptic species1 in inaccessible ocean areas. Full Article
raw Pollutants released by seafloor trawling affect marine life By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 6 Dec 2012 12:00:14 GMT Commercial bottom trawling, the technique of pulling fishing gear across the seabed to catch fish and other seafood, releases pollutants trapped in the seabed, which can negatively affect local marine life and ecosystems. Recent findings from a Norwegian fjord show how mussels can take up high levels of contaminants released by trawling, with important health implications for consumers. Full Article
raw A new approach to evaluating the sustainability of substituting raw materials By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 12 July 2018 11:23:19 GMT If the EU is to combat resource scarcity, it is necessary to develop and refine strategies for substituting raw materials with sustainable alternatives, such as recovered by-products from waste. A recent study presents a new approach for evaluating the sustainability of raw materials’ substitutions, based on the quantification of the embodied energy (energy required to produce the material from ores and feedstock) and carbon dioxide footprint (greenhouse gasses produced and released into the atmosphere during the production of the material) of both the raw material and its proposed substitute. The evaluation method has been applied to a real case, where it indicates that substituting a raw material (calcite) with stabilised fly ash for use as a filler in polypropylene composites in plastic manufacturing may be sustainable. The study also highlights the need for additional policy tools and legislation to encourage Europe’s transition towards a circular economy. Full Article
