Is there a single surge mechanism? Contrasts in dynamics between glacier surges in Svalbard and other regions

Is there a single surge mechanism? Contrasts in dynamics between glacier surges in Svalbard and other regions Murray, Tavi; Strozzi, Tazio; Luckman, Adrian; Jiskoot, Hester; Christakos, Panos During the 1990s, Monacobreen, a 40-km-long tidewater glacier in Svalbard, underwent a major surge. We mapped the surge dynamics using ERS synthetic aperture radar images, differential dual-azimuth interferometry and intensity correlation tracking. A series of 11 three-dimensional (3-D) velocity maps covering the period 1991–1997 show a months-long initiation and years-long termination to the surge, with no indication of a surge front travelling downglacier. During the surge, the front of the glacier advanced 2 km, the velocity and derived strain rate increased by more than an order of magnitude, and maximum ice flow rates measured during 1994 were 5md 1. The spatial pattern of both velocity and strain rate was remarkably consistent and must therefore be controlled by spatially fixed processes operating at the glacier bed. We combine these results with those published in the literature to construct a typical Svalbard glacier surge cycle and compare this to surge dynamics of glaciers from other cluster regions, especially those of Variegated Glacier in Alaska. The strong contrast in dynamics suggests that there exist at least two distinct surge mechanisms. Sherpa Romeo green journal. Permission to archive final published version.

The Role of IFRS 1: Getting There to Here

Webinar information current as of September 10, 2008

CCH IFRS Webinar Series 2008 - Seminar 4

Thousands of companies throughout Canada will soon be undertaking a major transition in financial reporting, by moving away from Canadian GAAP to a brand new set of accounting standards issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Key to successfully making this transition to IFRS is a thorough understanding of IFRS 1 First-time Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards. IFRS 1 sets out mandatory guidance, as well as several elective exemptions, for first time implementation of IFRS as a basis of financial reporting.

As a transitional standard, IFRS 1 has sought to address the demand of investors for transparent information that is comparable over all periods, while also allowing reporting entities a suitable starting point for accounting under IFRS. The initial application of IFRS 1, and choices made under this standard, will impact not only the transitional work involved in preparing for the adoption IFRS, but also post-conversion results of companies going forward under this new basis of reporting.

This webinar provides an update and a brief review of the requirements of IFRS 1 including:

  • The basic idea and some challenges
  • The practicalities: elective exemptions
  • Mandatory exemptions

This Pandemic Hits Americans Where We’re Spiritually Weak

Our cultural values are making us sad: money, mortality, and fear of missing out.

In a video chat last night, a friend admitted, “I’ve been crying a lot, and I’m not sure why.” COVID-19 has given us many reasons to weep. We’re out of our routines, the stock market has plunged, and we imagine millions dying. This virus and economic crisis punch us squarely where our spiritual armor is weakest: mortality, money, and our fear of missing out.

In 2 Corinthians 7, Paul distinguishes between two kinds of sorrow—a sorrow that “leads to death,” and a “godly sorrow.” The latter “brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret” (v. 10). Godly sorrow, he writes, produces “earnestness,” eagerness to repent, and a “longing” and “readiness to see justice done” (v. 11). The question the church faces now is which kind of sorrow COVID-19 will bring.

We are in the midst of the most widespread societal upheaval that many people alive today have ever experienced. Already our institutions, habits, relationships, and culture are shifting before our eyes. Frank M. Snowden, author of Epidemics and Society, shared with the New Yorker, “Epidemics are a category of disease that seem to hold up the mirror to human beings as to who we really are.” The question we are facing is not whether we will experience sorrow and change; the question is how. As biblical prophets walked with people through catastrophes, their advice was never to just endure until it ends. Instead they focused on proactively changing relationships with each other and with God.

As a cultural anthropologist who grew up in a middle-class white United States home and then lived for much of my adult life in Nicaragua, China, and South Africa, ...
