The OECD has published guidance to facilitate the ecological risk assessment of organometallic and organic metal salt substances. A strategy is presented based on key steps that first consider the fate of these substances in the environment, the identification of moieties of concern, and subsequently the selection of an appropriate path forward to either assess the inorganic moiety and/or the individual substance.

The OECD releases a video tutorial on how to find GHS information in eChemPortal through the substance search and how to search by GHS classification. Currently 11 databases provide GHS information, independent of whether the classifications have undergone a review by a regulatory body or intergovernmental organisation or are based on self-classifications by the producers or importers.

The first report is a synthesis from a Workshop on Approaches to Support Substitution and Alternatives Assessment, which discussed approaches used to support alternative assessments and substitution. The second report is a Cross Country Analysis of Approaches to Support Alternatives Assessment and Substitution of Chemicals of Concern that describes a list of approaches developed across countries and by different stakeholders.

It's all too easy to get sucked into a newsletter situation. Some of them are good, many of them are all kinds of blight. Here, Stangl goes deeper into the unsubcribe dilemma.

My inbox, like everyone else's, is brimming with newsletters, offers, coupons, and other nonsense. Why I would take the time to read a newsletter by a staffer at 'Nothing Bundt Cakes' (don't get me started on ridiculous company names) or the place I purchased dog poop bags from, is beyond me. Generally speaking I filter these directly into my trash file, but every once in a while, enough is enough. I take the time to click the 'unsubscribe' link that is in .00001 type at the very bottom of their message.

Reaction of 2-(anthracen-9-yl)phenol (HOPhAn, 1) with divalent Yb[N(SiMe3)2]2·2THF in THF–toluene mixtures affords the mixed-valence YbII–YbIII dimer {[2-(anthracen-9-yl)phenolato-κO]bis­(tetra­hydro­furan)­ytterbium(III)}-tris­[μ-2-(anthracen-9-yl)phenolato]-κ4O:O;κO:1,2-η,κO-{[2-(anthracen-9-yl)phenolato-κO]ytterbium(II)} toluene tris­olvate, [Yb2(C20H13O)5(C4H8O)2]·3C7H7 or [YbIII(THF)2(OPhAn)](μ-OPhAn)3[YbII(OPhAn)]·3C7H7 (2), as the major product. It crystallized as a toluene tris­olvate. The Yb—O bond lengths in the crystal structure of this dimer clearly identify the YbII and YbIII centres. Inter­estingly, the formally four-coordinate YbII centre shows a close contact with one anthracene C—C bond of a bridging OPhAn ligand, bringing the formal coordination number to five.

The reaction of [Se8][B12F11NH3]2 with acetone and subsequent crystallization from acetone/diethyl ether yielded the selenium cation [Se(CH2C(O)CH3)3]+ as a by-product, which is stabilized by the weakly coordinating undeca­fluorinated anion [B12F11NH3]−. While attempting to crystallize pure [Se8][B12F11NH3]2, the structure of the isolated product, namely, tris­(2-oxoprop­yl)selenium 1-ammonio­undeca­fluoro­dodeca­borate, was surprising. The cation [Se(CH2C(O)CH3)3]+ represents the first example for a cationic selenium compound with three ketone functional groups located in the β-position with respect to the selenium atom. The cation possesses almost trigonal–pyramidal C3 symmetry and forms hydrogen bonds to the ammonio group of the anion.
