range Patt's Hats: Disney sells Tonto's headdress from 'The Lone Ranger' By feeds.scpr.org Published On :: Mon, 01 Jul 2013 16:47:55 -0700 Patt Morrison models a headdress from the movie "The Lone Ranger."; Credit: Michelle Lanz/KPCC Patt MorrisonTrust me – you’re going to be seeing a lot of these between now and Halloween. I went to “The Lone Ranger” premiere last month, and outside the theater, Disneyland began selling a version of the Tonto headdress dreamed up by Johnny Depp and his folks for his role in the film, which I found to be a rollicking, ironic version of the classic action adventure with some very sober scenes evoking Native Americans’ tragic history. The inspiration, Depp says, was artist Kirby Sattler’s interpretive 2006 painting “I Am Crow.” Depp himself has claimed Native American ancestry, and the bird atop his bean plays a substantial if silent role in the proceedings. It is an interpretive painting, as I said, not a literal rendering of any tribal makeup. In the Sattler painting, the bird is flying above the figure’s head, not perched on it. But the movie’s invested in storytelling, not the fine points of accuracy. If it had been, it wouldn’t have made the historical solecisms of relocating both Monument Valley and the transcontinental railroad to … Texas. This content is from Southern California Public Radio. range Sustainability ‘score’ for buildings accounts for range of environmental impacts By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Tue, 23 Apr 2013 10:58:32 +0100 Researchers in Lithuania have assessed and ranked the sustainability of buildings on a wide range of criteria, from pollution caused by the building materials to the running costs of the building. An overall sustainability index based on these criteria allows the comparison of different buildings and, using this index, the study estimated that a wood-based building is 7.5% more sustainable than a house made of bricks. range Benefits of marine reserves revealed for wider range of fish species By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 23 July 2015 9:23:19 GMT Mathematical models created to help design marine reserves have tended to focus on fish species where larvae are highly mobile but adults occupy relatively small areas. However, new research has extended these models to include fish species with different life histories, such as groupers and flounders, showing that they also benefit substantially from reserve protection. range Early warnings: climate change may force plant ranges to split, threatening genetic diversity By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 16 Jun 2016 09:01:15 GMT Signs that the ranges of sub-mountainous forest plants in France have contracted in response to global warming have been detected in a new study. This pattern is likely to induce a splitting of these species’ ranges across Europe under future climate change, which could have serious consequences for plant genetic diversity and the capacity of plant populations to adapt to warming climates, say the researchers. range Wildflower planting supports a range of beneficial insects, not only bees By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Tues, 27 June 2017 9:23:19 GMT A study of wildflower planting within agri-environment schemes has demonstrated that the practice can support a diverse array of economically beneficial insect species, not just prominent pollinators such as wild bees and hoverflies. The study demonstrates the high conservation potential of wildflower planting within agricultural landscapes and the value of insects outside the traditional focus of conservation efforts. range Disinfection by-products in drinking water: new detector may meet need for monitoring and detection of broader range of DBP classes, Sweden By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 27 September 2018 9:23:19 GMT The presence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water is an emerging health concern. DBPs come in many classes and are chemically diverse, making them challenging to monitor. Swedish researchers have evaluated a new method for the simultaneous determination of a broader range of DBPs than typically possible using other available techniques. The method uses gas chromatography (a laboratory technique that separates and analyses vaporisable compounds in a mixture), together with a halogen-specific detector (XSD). Having been tested in real water samples from two municipal waterworks in Sweden, the method has been optimised for the simultaneous determination of a wide range of neutral DBPs. Full Article
range Aerosol pollutants can have long-range effects on ocean oxygen levels By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 21 Jul 2016 09:12:34 GMT Oxygen decline is occurring in many of the world’s oceans and has important consequences for marine ecosystems, but the causes are not fully understood. Aerosol pollutants may be partly responsible, according to a new study which modelled the effects of atmospheric pollution over the Pacific Ocean. The findings suggest that air pollution can exacerbate climate impacts on the ocean, even when the source is far away. Full Article
